Help Save My Big Toenail!

So i went skiing for the first time in the Aussie season about a week or two ago and i had some new dropkicks, which i had heat moulded, but still needed some breaking in. On the first day i just cruised around, hit some side booters and did a few laps of the park to get back into it and it was all fine until the day came to an end and i took my boots off and my big toe nails were absolutely killing me so i thought it must just be some toe bang because they were new and hadn't fully moulded. (my boots do fit me properly and i was fitted for these boots). After that my boots were great and i really like them and i kept skiing the rest of the week, but not nearly 2 weeks later the top of my left toenail is nit really attached to the rest of my toe if you know what i mean, like i can lift up the nail a tiny bit.

I've read some other toebang threads and some people say they don't go a season without loosing their big toenails and i cant see that as normal, but i could be wrong. Anyway, it doesn't hurt at all i'm just worried it will fall off and be a gross naked big toe. Has anyone else had this problem or can help me see how this could pan out?

Thanks and sorry for the long post, i just really like my toenail.

The same thing happened to me two years ago but my boots were a little too small. Basicly my toenail became blue then started to detach and then fell off. It dosen't hurt but when you'll be riding but a band-aid on to prevent it from being directly in contact with your socks because the first time I went skiing without one it was bleeding and hurting after the day. But after that it was alright and still had no problem riding afterward.

Last year I landed backseat off a jump and noticed the same thing with my big toenail :( It turned black and blue and was that color for like 6 months when it finally decided to detach and I ripped it off. RIP TOENAIL #neverforget

I had the 2012 drop kicks and now 2015 b and e and they're basically the same boot and I've never had toe bang or lost a toe nail. But Would it help if one were to cut their toe nail really short to prevent it?

Purple toenails are something skiers wear with pride. I get a pair every season and don't complain, sure it hurts once in a while but it feels so badass when you show them off through your sandals in the springtime.

if a toenail goes all blue it's too late, it's a gonner. You can sometimes save them if right after they get hurt you poke through the top with a hot needle and release the fluids.

Get SPKs. Solution to all of life's feet problems. :)

I think the toenail is gone.

I could barely walk after skiing killy this year in my new boots..3 months later my big toe nail fell off..now its about 3/4s the way grown back.

You'll be ok Op.

U R pussy

If it's a good ski season I can lose my big toe nail twice in a season. Average season I only lose one. Seriously between soccer, skiing, mountain biking, running, ect, I lose most of the nails on my feet on a yearly basis. I thought everyone did?

When they were heat molded, did the fitter put a toe cap on? If not, the liner will be way too close to your toes.

How's your shell fit? If it's too small you'll obviously be cramped up, but it's normally being too big that causes the foot to slide forward, ramming the toenail into the front of the boot.

your toe nail will fall off but its not gonna hurt at all man and it will grow back. its common among skiers and runners too.

with toe bang there are some really good remedies

If you have a black toe, take a safety pin and a lighter. poke a hole through the nail to release the blood from the blood blister under the toe. this shouldn't hurt and it will help get rid of the black toe and pain from it.

then, just lift the nail up to clean it with some hydrogen peroxide and polysporn. then wrap some medical tape around it and the toe to prevent it from lifting up/ getting in the way

if you don't have a black toe which you have stated just do the hydrogen peroxide, polysporn and medical tape.

I had this problem half way through my session at momentum but my toes were in excruciating pain. did these steps and by the next day of skiing i was back to 100%

Yeah they take forever and a half to grow back

Quoted for emphasis, this actually works as long as you get it quick enough. Sounds like for OP that ship has sailed though, you'll probably lose it but it's no big deal, the skin under hardens up in a few days and then... no more pain for this season.

I want to start a boot company that buys the SPK moulds from Salomon just like Full tilt.

That huge toe box always had my toenails in absolute bliss even in the biggest forwards slam of all time.

Get SPKs.

I never had the balls to do this, i came close, had the needle half way thru the nail then couldnt do it the rest of the way. Fuck that, id rather have an ugly toe nail and have it fall off then shove a hot needle thru it. No thank u

a little less intimidating way is to take a tiny drill bit and twist gently with you fingers until you have drilled a little hole in the nail

do they still have that rubber spot in the toebox for toebang?

I still get serious toebang sometimes, but that's probably more from trying to afterbang really hard. Instead of getting SPKs I'd recommend permanent toenail removal.

When i got them moulded i had a toe box thing to get a bit more room and it seemed to do the trick and like i said they feel amazing now they just had to be broken in a bit. I've never heard about SPK, is it a brand or? And what does it and how does it help?

Thanks Mr. Bishop!

its cool though, i had my big toe nail surgically removed and now i only have nine, it looks pretty steezy and will get you mad pussy.

I've had two big toenails fall off - it's not really a big deal, more just inconvenient because I found I couldn't ski until they finally fell off. You'll live.

Hah *still* is pretty hard because the SPK was discontinued by Salomon a few years back. So yes the pair I still have possess that wonderful feature, but if you want SPKs you're SOL if you want new. SPK pro is the key, just a bit stiffer than the regular SPK and the absolute shit.

Its an old Salomon boot. It was when Salomon was super into park skiing, and they made a boot 100% dedicated to park skiing. It has three main characteristics that matter for skiing - Huge rubberized toe box, shock absorbing footbeds and a more upright stance that really helps when skiing switch. As well, they are about the widest boot ever made. So if you've got big flippers like me, they were a godsend.

There was one year too where they wrapped the whole thing in leather, which made it ever so sick on the fashion front.

Rumor has it that Candide was still wearing SPKs in One Of These Days 2. This was one of the sickest boots ever made if you were a park-minded skier. Sure they were a bit soft, but god damn.... if you are an SPK dude you're an SPK dude for life.

Never fails. I lose my right big toe nail every spring haha. I usually know the moment I land backseat and feel my toe ram into the front of my boot that it's a goner. Takes several months to fall off though. Just in time for spring break vacation and sandal season.

having experienced this many times, my best advice is to cut the nail as short as you can, poke a hole in the top with a hot needle to drain the fliud and continue to cut it short as it falls off. this is the best way I've found to keep it from hurting a ton and every now and then it will save the toenail. good luck!

Fuck yeah they are.

I mean people who haven't used these boots just don't understand how awesome they are.

If Candide can do that shit in them, then fuck anyone that says you can't do burly shit in these things.

Long live the SPK.
