i couldn't ride rails until a little while ago. what helped me was going at a pretty good speed on the first tries and looking at the end of the rail once i was on.

When I commit on a rail I go like 5 feet before falling backwards on my face. I've got the log grinds down but those are easy. I'm learnin' though.

always look at the end of the rail. Try a bit wider stance, that may help a bit.

ill actually try to help you out here; first, log grinds are nothing like rails. rails provide pretty much no resistance, and digging in your edges wont do anything but make you fall on your ass. a tip someone told me that works is to always keep your back leg outside your back shoulder, that way you can never fall back. also, once you have the balance down, look at the end of the rail and 270 off that shit. hope that helped
