Whattup guys, i'm looking to ski Tuckerman's this spring and have absolutely no idea when to be planning this - what time of spring does it typically start getting good? what site should i be looking at for avy info?

thanks

i went 2 years ago in may..

the best time to go is as soon as all the EC ski mtns are closed..

check the weather ahead, pick out a good sunny day, not too warm.

have a backpack that you can mount your skis on and put your boots and gear in.

youll need a shit load of water and a big lunch to eat when you get to the bottom of the ravine.

get there early, and bring some good shoes/boots to hike in.

all this

and bring the lightest pair of skis u cna b/c 5 lbs is a big difference when u hike like 3 miles.

i did it too late in like june, try to go around may, cause then u will b able to ski down most of the way and it will be a lot better snow. water and food are nessecairy to have tons of.

yeah, food and water are a must, im going hopefully in about 2 weeks, sometime over my schools break. Should be a sick time

the best part about doing it real early is so you can ski down that trail farther.. less hiking down.

im planning a trip may 13-15. check timefortuckerman.org too, sometimes they have updates

I think i'm going the weekend after hike n huck or something. should be sweet. wouldn't mind being able to ski down, last time we couldn't ski down far at all which kinda sucked

I am going this friday and in my opinion pre may is the best time to go. This is mainly due to the fact that as you start getting later and later, skiing down the 2 mile hike to the "lunch rocks" because impossible. This means your hiking in, hiking the actual skiing part multiple times and hiking out. Ends up being alot of hiking. So id recommend going late april on a sunny and warm day.

im gonna be there for several days in early-mid may, just lookin for a nice stretch of weather. wish i could go in april though

The only problem with this weekend is it is the Tuckermans Inferno Race, which puts a ton of extra people on the trails/snow plus a race course down the headwall. Generally not a great weekend to rec ski it.

The biggest thing to remember is to be smart in tux. If you have never skied it, or even if you have, small mistakes can mean a 500ft scary slide to the ravine floor or worse. Falling ice, open water and crevasses all can cause problems. Remember to Hike what you Ski!

i usually go up this weekend too if its nice out cuz the do waaaay more avalache control due to the race. plus its not really that crowded on the trail
