Help on external hard drive

Just got mine back from the repair shop and it's official dead I guess. I'm looking to buy a new one, I've heard great things about WD.

Also as far as keeping a back up goes, is it possible to keep a back up of the stuff on your external on your main hard drive as like a zip or compressed file so it won't take up quite as much room ?

Don't know about the second question, but... I would go with a G-tech for a hard drive. I love mine, really durable, USB, Firewire 800 X2 ports. I enjoy that it was time machine configured too right off the bat. I have the 320 GB but get whatever fits your needs. We have a pc back home and we use westen digital for that, it works fine as well, I just prefer the g-drive.

Personally I would just buy an enclosure and buy your own HDD to put in... But if you don't know much about computers/don't want to bother, yeah most of the WD ones are good...

For backing up your external onto your main hard drive as a zip... I don't see why not.

The best way to backup your external onto your main drive is probably an .iso disk image. Probably a little more compressed than a .zip and just as easy to make (with the right software that is obtained rather easily). As far as drives, I have a Seagate 1TB drive and its worked very well for me, but so would WD.

And as a side note I would also agree with the enclosure idea. Very easy to do (they usually come with clear directions) and often its a matter of putting in a few screws, nothing too difficult.

g-tech = hitachi

i just tried to build my brothers computer with two seagate drives, and they bloody suck.

didn't read or boot when they chose, took them back and got two WD blacks instead, no problems at all.

also, two greens in my build right now, and used blacks in another friends build.

WD drives are really reliable in my experience, can't say anything for hitachi...

picked up a 500g WD at walmart today, anyone know of any software i can use to help with making a back up in a zip file on my main hard drive ?
