Help NS With A Survey... Please

This winter we were approached by PhD student Thomas Langenberg who is currently studying Social Network Analysis in search of detailed information on how members in online communities such as Newschoolers share information, and in general interact with each other on an ongoing basis.

In the interest of the great concept of learning we decided to help, and we’ve done so by implementing a survey through NS that we’d now like the community’s help with (i.e. you, reading this right now). By participating you’re aiding both the research project and Newschoolers and you even have a chance to win some prizes. All the relevant information is laid out below by Thomas and he or I will be happy to answer any question you may have. Thanks to everyone that takes the time to help!

You can learn more about the survey here (& under Interact \ Survey): https://newschoolers.com/ns3/web/content/pagetemplate.php?name=survey&page=survey_main

------"You have at least one contact in the newschoolers.com community, which you regularly share ideas, information, or comments with via the website"-------

^i dont have one of those

Re: shadow

If you consider yourself as a regular visitor of the NS website, it would be great if you could fill out the survey. In the questions that ask you for "information contacts", just leave the default answer, which is "--No_Contact--".

Just let me know if you have any more questions.

best,

Thomas

Dear all,

I am very glad that we posted that survey today. It'll be great to see how you guys are connected and you you contribute to progressing the industry.

I really encourage you to do the survey, because it is fun, you can win some nice prices, and you start thinking about how valuable the NS website is for you!!

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions regarding the survey or my research!

You can IM me or just shoot me an eMail to thomas (dot) langenberg (at) epfl (dot)ch.

Best,

Thomas

its not that i dont have a contact thats really important. its that everyone on NS has different info and some of it can be really good.

i mean, sure the whole ENOM crew has got some good industry relationships i guess, but so do some random people that work at ski shops that dont post regularly.

i left them as no contacts, but thats not really true.

people on NS are connected even if they dont know each other, so its not like we dont talk to someone we dont know even if that person has some sweet info.

Hey Anthony,

thank you very much for taking it!! The plan is to post some interesting insights and results on the website once the survey is done. I am sure it will help you and the NS team to increase the power and impact of the website!

To make the survey successful, it is very important that as much members as possible take the survey!

So thanks a lot and spread the word about this survey and the usefulness of taking it.

Best,

Thomas

Hey Shadows,

thanks for the comment.

The core idea of the contact question it that you think about NS members you are most often in contact with on the NS website by either asking them for info/advice or who come to you to ask for info/advice. If you know this person from the NS website that is exactly what the survey is looking for. The contact does not necessarily need to be a contact you know in your real skiing life.

the survey is mostly concerned with your NS contacts, who you meet and interact with on the website. i used the "skiing homebase" question or the question "is there an NS online contact that you go skking with offline" to "kind of" get a feeling of how similar the respondent's online and offline network(s) are.

Updating your answers

If you feel like you want to update your answers, I implemented a short period of time (2 days), which you can use to update your answers.

Hey pjbball04,

that's ok! if you cannot spend 20 minutes of your time on a survey, I can totally understand that. So don't worry!

However, if you still feel like having a look at it, you can just answer the first three questions, which are already something. We ask you about how you think about your favorite ski brand.

You furthermore have 2 days to update the survey, so if you do 3 questions today and 3 tomorrow that makes already 6, which would be great.

In any case, if you simply do not have the time or do not want to take it that is fair enough!

everyone should be taking this survey, it doesn't take long nad definitly helps out a lot, and will be pretty cool to see what comes of it.

i think the concepts great and i just filled out the survey, but alot of my "information" comes from random people through forums. Sure there are a few friends i will ask, but the survey seemed greared more towards who do you message (idk if i missed the point?) cause there are a bunch of members who post in ski equipment who i respect/ seem knowledgable, but i never would directly ask them. Other than that this seems like a cool idea. good luck

i'm assuming that when it asks for an alias it means just your username, which is an alias of your real name, correcty? thought it would be a good point to clear up in case anyone thought it meant alias like it's used in the forums as a second username.

Thanks a lot!! I know answering a survey tends to be boring. Especially social network surveys are kind of long because questions seem to be very similar. It is even more exhausting to build them. It took me approx. 2 months to set the questions up, to double check them with my prof, and to streamline the whole survey ....

However, results are always very illuminating, because they show connections and ties one would not have thought of beforehand!

[*]Preliminary Survey Stats:

- 95 members have taken the full survey

- 157 members have taken at least a part of the survey.

Keep up the good work! Our goal is to get a s close as possible to a 100% response rate!

As soon as I have the first results, I'll post some interesting sections of the network maps and what we can learn from them!

Survey Stats Update:

We have 309 respondents in total now, whereby

- 119 have fully taken the survey, and

- 190 respondents have skipped parts of the survey.

i just took it, i dont no how much help i was cuz i dont really have and real contacts that i look to for information on this site

i think there should have been more questions on where we look for info on the site instead of who because im willing to listen to anyone who sounds like they know what theyre talking about... that doesnt mean im gonna do what they say but ill listen

I did it! I kind of made up stuff for my favorite bindings, cause i just get some random bindings and throw them on my skis

Good morning everyone. Here are my survey stats for the day:

- The total amount of respondents has grown up to 541

- While 213 of you guys have answered all the survey questions, 328 have skipped parts of the survey

Thanks a lot for your work! With respect to prizes: We raffle four iPod Gift certificates ($25) and we'll post the results of the raffle on the forum/news item. You won't miss it!

If you have any questions, please feel free to get back to me!

Best,

Thomas

Haha, I didn't know you could skip parts of the survey. My survey was kind enough to remind me to fill out all the numbers that I'd skipped over the course of taking it. That was fun and informative, though, and it will be interesting to see the results.

Dear all,

here the current stats. We have 658 replies to the survey. 250 members have taken the full survey and 408 members have skipped a couple of questions.

I am working on a first glimpse into the NS network. I'll post a first network map tomorrow. It looks pretty interesting.

Keep up the good work and thank you so much.

Best,

Thomas

p.s. an iPod gift certificate is a $25 coupon with which you can buy music from the iTunes website.

I gave up. I have to much energy to sit and answer the questions. I gave a good attempt and I would like to apolagize to the NS people.
