Help me with my Park Report App

I posted a few months ago about an idea I'm working on for a Terrain Park Report app that is basically meant to solve this problem. Since then I've been building it and wanted to get some more feedback at this stage. I've built out the entire cloud back end and much of the mobile app is working, but theres still a lot left to do.

I'll include some screenshots. I know the styling and colors are a little janky right now (I've been focusing on functionality over style), but take a look and let me know what you think of the direction it's going in. And especially let me know what you think if you don't like it or think something is missing.

The first screen shows you all the ski areas near you on a map and lists a summary of it's rating and how many park features it has divided into boxes, rails, jumps, pipes, and jibs

873883.pngSelecting a park from the map screen brings you to the Park Report screen. Here, anyone can post about the conditions of the park. Park reports will be curated with upvotes and downvotes from other users.

You can also view all the features that are up at a resort/park in either a grid view or a map view (the UI here is similar to Airbnb). In the grid view, the time indicates how long ago the feature was confirmed to still be up and open.

873887.png

873888.png

Selecting a single feature will bring you to an Instagram-like feed of photos on that feature. Here, the user with the best photo will be the king of that feature- kind of like how you could be the "mayor" of a place on Foursquare back in the day.

873889.png

You will also be able to update/correct any of the information associated with a feature. You can also confirm th information if it is all correct and current.

In the way of photos - I'm also planning on building out a "Feed" tab in the app that will be a feed of all the photos from all the features from all the resorts that you've favorited.

So let me know your thoughts. Both positive and negative are helpful.

*In app photo creds to Tanner Sinclair (T-Sin on NS) and Drew Fuller

So how are you exactly going to update 50 different parks across the country to 1:1? Is this done from user posts/activity?

Most of the information will be user/crowd sourced. The crowd sourced information will be curated and kept accurate with upvotes, downvotes, and corrections.

Parks/resorts will also have the option to become an "official" account and post "official" reports. Those official reports will be pinned to the top of the feed, but will be shown with user generated reports.

Posting photos to specific features will also give incentive for users to keep information up to date.

it sounds nice. i dont have a home mountain so when i'm going to the mountain i don wanna come to a closed/melted/unshaped park. i am usually choosing resort after park quality so this would definatly help :-)

Yeah, exactly. I used to be in that position a lot too- trying to decide whether I should go to the mountain that's 45 minutes away or whether it's worth it to make the 2 hour drive to a mountain with a better park.

The idea is nice but there is already a app its called Bergfex idk if this works in the Us

It looks like Bergfex only covers Europe. There are several things that seem similar to Bergfex in the US that give snow conditions and weather. But my app is different because it focuses on the terrain park and what features are in the park

Bergfex also does that you see wich features are open, also with pics, but I like your idea to make a app that just features park. Hope it will be also released for european parks :)

What is this app called and i have you launced it yet. If not you should go for it.

I've been calling it Ullr. Haven launched yet, but I'm hoping to launch in January

For an app with "janky" styling, this looks super clean.

I do think that tagging features with their exact location is a little ambitious, they get moved around so much that I don't think your original userbase will be able to keep up. As the app grows I think it will become more feasible.

My favorite part about this is the "king of the feature" concept, watching how others make use of a certain feature could be really interesting.

Looking forward to seeing where this idea goes.

Who gave u an orange name ??

Love you David, app looks clean. Who will initialize what features exist so that people classify their photos to the right feature? Can anybody theoretically add a feature/ would there be local moderator privileges to moderate that? What's behind the name Ullr?

Haha. I kept giving Doug orange stuff with my name written on it one summer in Whistler.

So anybody can add features at any time and they'll be moderated by downvotes from other users. If enough people report that the feature is down, then it will be automatically removed by the system. I'm also throwing around the idea of giving resorts/park crew members higher privileges to moderate things like that if they opt into being an "official" account.

As far as initializing all the features for the first time- I want to have a bunch of people beta test the app in December before it's actually released in January. Hopefully I can get enough interested people to beta test from different resorts that most will be populated with features by the time the app actually releases.

And Ullr is me Norse god of snow. Coming up with a good name is the hardest part of programming.

Thanks for the feedback. So do you think it would be more interesting to focus on the media sharing aspect of the app as it gets more built out?

Yo this sounds ill, how many parks will it cover? Is this U.S only or are you planning on to expand to Canada or say Australia for example.

It will eventually be all parks. But I think I'm going to start with just the US this winter, expand to the Southern Hemisphere this summer (winter there) and then expand to Canada and Europe if everything is going well

Sounds dope! Keep up the top work.

Not sure what you mean by the "media sharing aspect," since it seems to me like the entire app is built on media sharing. What I meant in my original post was that all of the concepts are solid except for people tagging the specific location of features (which you should hold onto until you gain more users).

The Instagram-like feed is nice and should be kept.

An unrelated complaint I have is how you mix blue and black text. You should pick one or the other -- my vote is for blue -- and then differentiate them by either boldness or size, not color. I know you said that the styling isn't final, but this is something to address before you release it.

Several mountains have some kind of database for features on their website already, but this could make things more universal.

One thing that would be cool would a way to layout a map. Obviously it wouldn't have corners in the trail, as it would have to be generic but it could be a cool addition. IF you have some stock shapes for different features the park could then setup the different parks in a map system.

For instance.

Bull Mountain Parks

Easy Steezy

Medium Park

Papa Muntz XL

If those parks were links that you click and it brought up a map you could see the linear flow of the park.

The features don't have to be phenomenal looking but it could be sweet. When I've looked at mountains parks that use some form of that, I have a pretty good idea how the park will be before attending. I know it works well in desktop forum, not sure about a phone app, but clicking on the feature could then show you a picture and description of the feature.

So you see a generic halfpipe looking shape. Then you click it and see a picture (The 550' long pipe in the Papa Muntz park features 22' walls and is cut nightly by our zaugg)

Click on a Down Flat rail and it shows a picture (26' down flat rail)

Idk, just some ideas.

I didn't search too hard but something like this

I don't think google maps imaging would be necessary. I think straight runs where you actually show the features vs. pins could streamline it.

The biggest thing for getting parks to use this and keep it up to date is getting the riders to use it. If there are people using it, and we will gain some customers, we'll keep it up to date. If nobody is using it, it's hard to justify spending the time on it.

One way to engage people could be to allow people to post their own pictures of the park, or maybe even specific features. Obviously this would either need a button for the park to approve the photo and or have a report photo button because people are savages sometimes. Not necessary but could also add in a rating system that will put the top rated rider photo to the front.

I'm definitely interested to see how this goes. Keep us updated. Good luck

I like this idea a lot and definitely would use it. Something that I would like to see would be some sort of dating system linked to each feature. I.e. This down rail was placed on so and so date, and this park crew usually rotates features so often. That way, when your trying to bag a shot or just love a certain section of the park, you'll be able sorta guess how much longer it will be around for. You could even add a favorites list for specific features, and have alerts for when they are getting close to being switched out. Great app and unique ski app. Looking forward to the release

Yeah what he said maybe make a feature where you can bookmark and/or favorite a certain park or ski area. If you made the app I definetly would use it.

This shits tight, so much potential. Keep up the good work. One question though how would you be funding this? Ads or would it be a paid app?

Hey friend!!!

The app looks great! I'm not super sure I would personally find the google map view with the pins of where features are in each park super helpful/ user friendly.... but I'm not sure what the alternative would be. Maybe allow the user to choose a specific park and then zoom in on that park and provide a more specific list of features in that view? Another thing to think about - might want to ensure that the app is still as functional as possible offline. Many resorts get shitty service and it would be really annoying to make notes on the app/ take pictures of features/ etc that couldn't ever be posted because I had no service at the time. Another UX note - when deciding the color scheme of the app, I would think about which colors would create the least amount of glare/ are easiest to see on a phone screen in the sun.

Overall it looks like you're making great progress with this project. Hit me up when you get to the beta testing stage I definitely wanna help out!

Not 100% sure of a mometization model yet. But it will be free to users

That would be cool but realistically I can't see many resorts keeping up with that.

Could post the date that park was rebuilt though.
