ok so my discussion/debate class teacher gave us a test on the last period before spring break. noone solved it so he let us take it home. i've already worked on it two hours and he said he did it in 15. i think he wrote down the problem wrong. if anyone has the time to help me it would be greatly appreciated.

1. There are five (5) houses on a block, eache of a different color, with owners having different nationalities, pets, and favorite candy bars.

2. The Englishman lives in a red house

3. The Spaniard owns a dog

4. Coffee is drunk in a green house

5. The Ukrainian drinks tea

6. The green house is immediately to the right (your right) of the ivory house

7. The Hershey Bar eater owns snails

8. Baby Ruth Bars are eaten in the yellow house

9. Milk is drunk in the middle house

10. The Norwegian lives in the first house on the left

11. The man who eats Butterfinger Bars lives next to the man with the fox

12. Baby Ruth Bars are eaten in the house next to the house where the horse is kept

13. The Mars Bar eater drinks orange juice

14. The Japanese eats Milky Way Bars

15. The Norweigan lives next to the blue house

Problems:

1. Who drinks the water?

2. Who owns the zebra?

i typed it word for word and you can see he misspelled norwegian once so i believe along with some of my classmates that he left out a key component. also the two questions are worth 50 points each. so if i don't get both right i automatically fail

they each have different pets/owners/candy bars?

what about beverages? if they dont all drink different beverages then its a trick question.

its called the ensteine riddle but its alittle different, its not to hard if you put it in a chart

first house: Norweigien/fox/yellow/water/baby ruth

second house: Ukranian/horse/blue/tea/butterfingers

third house: Englishman/snails/red/milk/hershey bars

fourth house: Spaniard/dog/ivory/OJ/mars bars

Fifth house: Japanese/zebra/green/coffee milky way

it is a trick question becuase it is illegal to own a zerbra beacuse it is an endangered animal, and everyone has to drink water or they would die, problem solved

Seen that one once before, took me a while though. First spend like 15min thinking out of my head then figured out it's best to use a chart like someone here already said, doesn't take you longer then 20mins after you filled in all the things you know in the chart, no I'm not gonna do it for ya, you'll probably need to have the method to, so that the way it has to be done

thanks everyone. and yeah everyone drinks and does has a different pet and all that. but i really think he messed up somewhere because i had like 3 charts and still couldn't do it. my whole class which is filled with only smart kids didn't get it. you have to have above a 3.8 and have the teacher say its ok your in the class

all i needed to be sure of is the middle house then i got it. i think it was the atmosphere. the teachers student helper is a loud mouth who wouldn't shut up the entire time and my teacher thinks its beneficial to blast CHER the whole time were taking the test

he didn't mess up. it just takes deduction. its one of the harder ones i've seen of problems like this. i'm pretty much the queen of deduction though. im obsessed with minesweeper.

here you go, it's great for killing time when you're flying or something like that:

There are 3 men standing in a line behind eachother.

There are 3 black caps and 2 white caps.

Every man randomly gets a cap.

They can't tell eachother what colours they see.

The first one doesn't see any of the other men, the second one only sees the first man and the last man sees both other man.

If we ask the last guy if he knows what color cap he got on his head he answers: "No, I don't know"

Then we ask the second man if he knows what color cap he got on his head, he answers: "No, I don't know"

Then we ask the first man if he knows what color cap he got on his head, he answers: "Yes, I know!" (and he's right)

What color cap is the first man wearing and how does he know?

he's wearing black. unless the other two men are stupid.

the guy in the back, doesnt know what color he's wearing, the only way he would know is if the two in front of him were both wearing white. the guy in the middle knows that if he and the person in front of him were wearing white the guy in back would know what color his hat is. and if the guy in the front were wearing white, then the guy in the middle would know that his is not also white. cause then the guy in the back would know the color. and therefore, he would know that his is black. but he doesnt know. so the guy in front is wearing black. he's also very smart.

Cool you're smarter then 95% of the people I know ;-)

I got some more but don't feel like translating them right now, they're all in dutch, I'll email them you later if you want them.

i actually do want them if you have time. yes im a nerd. everyone flame me for voluntarily doing problem solving.

just dont' read the answers it makes it stupid. i only checked on the middle house and did the rest myself

my grade 7 english teacher made our class do these all the time, i got so pro at them, just draw out a picture and its super easy

yeah but usually in those ones theres more facts that relate to eachother. ie: jimmy eats peanuts...the guy who eats peanuts lives in a blue house...jimmy lives next to robby...

this one is actually pretty hard. do you draw like an actual picture or a graph/chart?

holy crap i finally solved it...I've been working on it on and off for like the past three days and drew like my 5th chart today and it all finally clicked...wow i'm not good at these things at all

i had to do that in 6th grade and i killed it and got like 10 billion extra credit points. its the german. ill try to figure it out and explain it

the norwegion lives in the left house

the blue house must be the second to the left

the green house is to the right of the ivory house

the green house must be either the right house or seocnd to right

the ivory house must be either the middle house or the second to right

the yellow house must eb either the right house or the middle house

the red house must be either the right house or the middle house

the englishman lives in the red house

the norwegion lives in the left house

the red house cannot be the right house, and must be the middle

the englishman lives in the middle house

the ivory and green house are next to eachother

the green house must be the right house and the ivory house must be the second to right

the yellow house must be on the right

the englishman livesi n the middle house

cofee is drunk in the green house

the ukranian drinks tea

the ukrainian either lives second to left or second to right

tea must be drank in the second to left or second to right

the mars bar eater drinks oj

the norwegion eats baby ruth and cannot drink oj

the englishman drinks milk and cannot eat mars bar

the right house drinks cofee and cannot eat mars bar

oj must be dran in either the second to right or second to left

water must be drank in the right house

THE NORWEGION DRINKS WATER

the japanese eats milkey way

the mrs bar eater drinks oj

the japanese cannot drink oj

the japanese must drink cofee

the japanese is on the right

the spaniard owns a dog

the spaniard must live either socond to right or second to left

the horse is second to left

the spaniard must be second to right

the dog must be second to right

the hershy eater owns a snail

the only hous that can have both conditions is the middle

the eglishman is complete

baby ruth is eaten in the yellow house

the norwegion eats baby ruth in the left house

baby ruth is nest to the horse

the horse is second to left

the ukranian must be second to left

tea must be second to left

oj must be second to right

mars bar must be second to right

butter finger must be second to left

the butterfinger eater lives next to the man with the fox

the fox must be on the left with the norwegion

the only remainig blank is the animal of the japanese

THE JAPANESE MUST OWN THE ZEBRA, which makes sense cuz the japanese are so fucking weird

the only way you could follow that would be to fill draw five boxies with five lines (one line or ech condition inside each box) and fill each possibilty in lightly with pencil and the write it down hard once you come to a conclusion
