Help me pick out a car!

alright, so i have 12-14k to spend on a car. I have worked really hard all summer and have been saving up. I really audi's and bmw's and would really prefer one of those. I know this being ns i will have way to many subie suggestions. But i will be able to work on it (my dad being a mechanic) so its not like i will have to pay for all of the maintenance. less than 70k miles would be preferred. I would rather have 4 wheel drive, and at-least rwd. And i would also prefer a station wagon or a coupe because i want to go completely one way or the other. Thanks alot

+k for solid responses.

And sorry if my grammar is bad for all you grammar natzis

exactly what you're looking for

And my dad restored a 1988 jeep wagoneer. He put a 6.6 letre 401 v8. With eblebrok(sp?) 4 barrel carburetors and a flow master exhaust. Its pushin 360 hp with 340 pounds of torque. To bad it only get 8 mpg.

this. fucking this.

get say a 72 chevy like mine, put a 12 valve cummins turbo diesel in, twin turbo it, built nv4500, np205 dana 60's front and rear.

you'll have a beast that gets at least 20 mpg with more torque than you'll ever need.

jealous, but really i cant stand people who need advice trying to pick out a car above 10 grand in price. fuck man, anything is going to be dope. pick something YOU like.

My friend tried to do this, and he hates the car he's got now. He's selling it for less than he bought it.

I would definately get a station wagon instead of a coupe. Where are you going to put your skis in a coupe?

Subaru legacy/outback wagon, you could get like an 06-08 for 14k or less for under 70k miles.

Check out a passat wagon too, real sick too.

i have a small block, id love to drop a cummins in m truck.

it depends on how much you ca get the engine for. ive seem 91 ram 2500s for as low as 2000 bucks with a diesel. rebuild it, performance injectors and what not, you could do the swap for under 6000 id say

op get an audi allroad

the have a 2.7l v6 twin turbo, and they are the same as an a4 wagon, but liek offroad edition. They are slightly smaller than an a6, but they have much more suspension etc.

either that or an a6. I drive a 2000 a6 with 130k and it runs awesome

id would agree with some of the above posts to get a jetta or just any volkswagon they are proly the most reliable cars out there and you can make them look sick all while staying in your price range. and if you need room for skis look at getting a nice roof rack so you dont have to waste valuable seat space

fucking this.

or just spend ~ $5k on a car and bank the rest.
paying 14 grand for a used bmw isnt worth it in my opinion. plus im not sure if you could find one with less than 70 k miles on it for that price but i could be mistaken.

not everyone has the skill/time/money to waste/lack of common sense/love of american automobiles/fetish for things that eat too much gas/space in their garage/lack of interest in handling dynamics/house in the boons that requires a tank to access/interest in restoring something that warrants rebuilding an old truck. When the kid says he's interested in audis and bmws, that should be a hint that he probably isn't interested in your idea. While free speech is encouraged and we appreciate your contribution, it probably isn't worth your time to truck and force a full sized pickup down the kids throat.
To the op, if you like an audi, get an audi. If you like bmws, get that. There have been good suggestions in this thread, but honestly its up to you to do the research and separate the lemons from the winners. Once you do that and you buy what you want I guarantee you'll have a car you love.

if your looking at audis and bmw's, dont worry so much about mileage, look more at the actual model. audi has some extremely unreliable cars, they also have some extremely reliable cars too. bmw in general builds pretty tough reliable cars, but some are much more reliable than others. dont be scared of older cars, both companies older cars are more tough and reliable than their newer ones. and almost always more of a real drivers car. newer cars in general are watered down and numb... i know of a couple e30's still running strong with 300,000-400,000 miles plus on the stock motor.
with both brands older is better in most cases. you could buy a 5 grand e30 325is and honestly be able to say you have a better car than the guy in a brand new 335. if your looking at m's the older the m3 the better. for your price range you could find an e30 m3 in good condition. they tend to last well over 200,000 miles, but if you can try to find one with lower miles or a rebuilt motor. dont worry about mod's even a completely stock one will blow you away with how well it drives. bmw engineers knew what they were doing, some retard modding it in his garage didnt... they are pretty tough cars, the e30 chassis is a tank, the motor, while being high strung, is also pretty tough, just dont get behind on regular maintenance. the people that own these cars are people who fix any little detail thats not right. so they are good cars to buy.
e36 m3. while not as much of a true sports car as the e30 m3, its just an overall great sports car. but when driven really hard, it wont be as fun as the e30. both these m3's are the only m3's id look at, the newer ones are just downhill.
if you want something more modern and comfortable, look for an e46 330i zhp. basically a 330i with alot of changes to the suspension, engine, interior, etc.. a really well balanced nice looking car.
if you still want an oldschool bmw, but want something bigger and more comfortable (none of the cars ive mentioned would be uncomfortable for anyone thats not a grandpa) look at e28 m5's.
if you want a sweet wagon, look for an e34 5 series touring. its hard to find a good one for sale, but every once and awhile one awesome one pops up. one sold not too long ago with a completely redone interior, m5 body styling stuff. awesome wheels, completely redone suspension and a supercharged s50 (e36 m3 motor) with like 350hp. join a bmw forum and say thats what your looking to buy and im sure one will pop up that you like.
e39 5 series wagons are also pretty cool.
if you want an awd bmw, get an e30 325ix. i really wouldnt buy any other awd car for under 10 grand, its just the most awesome awd car ever.
as for audi, people will tell you to go with a b5 s4, but dont, its a great car to drive, but its going to have a new problem every week, and any m3 is a better car.
an old ur quattro would be sweet, but not great for reliablilty. there are some awesome 90's and coupe quattro's out there if you look. plus its way cooler than being like every other bro with a wrx.
you can pm me if you have any other questions..

i still got a couple months till im in your exact position, but still, why hasn't anyone said Mazda? Lookin at 09 mazda6's and live in NY so dont really need AWD, plz no hate I'm j/w..

you believe AWD and 4WD don't both make it better driving in the winter?

i'd love to hear the reason behind this hypothesis?

Doesn't fit your specifications... but if i had that kind of money i'd be looking for one of these babys....

A beautiful... murdered out, GMC Denali.. getting you 12-15 miles to the gallon!

imo, cars are the worst necessary investments in life. they are always depreciating in value and can be unreliable as fuck. i strongly disagree with your perceived notion of dropping 12-14K on a car. save your hard-earned money and buy a more economical vehicle.

putting money into having fun is always a good investment!!! economical cars are not fun, so not a good investment.
