Help me pick a new laptop

Going back to school, and sadly, I've gotta buy a computer. Max budget is 1500. I'm leaning towards the new macbook Air. Every windows thing I've owned has been pretty shit, even the higher end stuff. They feel cheap, break easily and don't seem to run as smooth. I don't do any gaming, just writing, and some video editing. I am open to something not mac tho, so hit me with some other ideas.

I really like my ThinkPad X1 Carbon. It's a little pricier though. I used to have a Macbook Air and I liked that a lot too but I like the keyboard on the ThinkPad more.

I'd highly recommend not getting an apple computer, they're over priced, underpowered and limited by their software. If you're an apple boi already, its not a bad call but overall, a 1500 windows laptop WILL be faster and better than a 1500 mb air.

Are you invested in the Apple ecosystem right now (iPhone, iPad, watch)? I love the integration of all my Apple devices with my Mac book. I also work on Windows machines daily and when I need a new daily driver windows laptop I will most likely get a Dell XPS 15.

Eh it might be faster out of the box but in the long run the Mac will be faster.

How can you even say this with a straight face? The idea that windows is worse is just completely false, its not 2010 anymore you guys are brainwashed by apple...

I manage 150+ windows machines, I have no issues with Windows and don't believe it is worse. But Apple builds OS's for a certain set of hardware where Windows is built for literally thousands of different configurations of hardware. Apple's OS will always be optimized for their hardware.

Doesn't matter if your software is garbage, I feel like you probably understand this as well. Paying 2-3x more for a computer because on paper it could be more efficient is just the wrong choice. Apple has been brainwashing millennials for years, I'm still shocked how hard some people will defend an overpriced piece of hardware.

I'm not really invested in either, I've got an Ipad, but I just use it for flying shit and shredsauce. I always used windows stuff growing up, but my family has switched to apple after a long run of shitty windows computers, so I'm a little more used to apple now. I do prefer the apple OS to windows 10. Cause its for school, I can get a few hundred off the apple price, which helps a little bit. Overall, I am leaning apple, but more cause I'm more recently familiar with it, I haven't touched anything windows in 5ish years, so I don't really know how far they've come. My only impressions of windows stuff has been from fingerfucking the laptops at best buy, and even the higher end ones (~$1300) feel really flimsy/have shit keyboards.

Really just get whatever you are more comfortable with then since you won’t be doing anything super taxing on the hardware.

These threads never fail to go the exact same route. It’s comical. And sad.

if you wanna go Mac, any of the MacBooks will do what you need them to and they’ll do it well. I have one and I love it, but I wasn’t really on a budget so I bought what I wanted.

I also have a windows laptop. MS Surface laptop 3 (the actual laptop, not the surface tablet) and it’s great too. Frankly it’s in the same league with Mac in terms of being a bit overpriced at the expense of sleekness and design, but not by the same degree. Works like a dream.

being in school myself, there are some slight differences in applications and working with groups where if all the rest are on PC and you’re on Mac, you’ll have to be resourceful to work around it. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s prohibitive or a reason to not get a Mac. It’s not. Get what you want to get and fuck the people who tell you you’re stupid for making your own decision.

Sounds like you've made your mind up on an apple product. That said I spent about 8-9 usd on a lenovo yoga something or other a couple years ago and it has been phenomenal. I dont video edit but it runs solidworks and some light gaming fine. The touchscreen is tight too and badass for notes or doodles.

Another thing to consider is most any software that's super taxing you can probably remote into the school servers and run without a beefy machine. Depending on your program there may be silly compatibility issues as well with apple but nothing kids haven't figured out.

After years of being a Mac hater I finally made the switch to a MacBook Air and love it. Every windows computer (same price range as MacBook) has been complete dogshit. Plus windows 10 is all around terrible.

OP said he already had an iPad. So let's not make his life burdensome by adding a whole new computer to his life. Just get this for your iPad, OP-
