anyone prefer one or the other? any other good laptops i should look at?

Custom build one. Get all the stuff you want, nothing you don't.

The HP one blows and if your a mac-head and don't mind a small screen the macbook wouldnt be bad.

Again though, it would help to know what you plan on using this laptop for in college. Just school stuff? High end editing? Gaming? Does your program require special software?

If you don't need to do any crazy editing (like Final Cut styles) or lots of gaming, the MacBook would cover all your needs. Although that isn't the greatest deal, only $100 off retail. And, if you don't need that much power, check out the refub store on apple.com. The educational store at apple.com will also have some deals starting tomorrow June 3rd. Probably buy a MacBook get a free iPod nano or something. Or just a steeper discount. Also, if you have a bit more money to spend, the MacBook Air is pretty sweet, I love mine.

alright, thanks guys. yeah, its going to be pretty basic. as of right now, i dont foresee any high end editing or gaming. i basically just want something that is going to work. as few crashes and break downs as possible.

You can get something to do WORK with for under 800 easy.

Avoid an Apple IMO since they will be overpriced/unnessecary for what you want.

I fucking love my Macbook and it's been running for two years. It runs just as well as it did the day I took it out of the box and it's never frozen.

Starting tomorrow, if you are a college/university student, you get a free 8 GB iPod touch (or $299 credit towards a 16 GB or 32 GB touch) with the purchase of any MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac Pro.
