(ive never gotten a photo to work so maybe ths will)

anyways i took this on my d50 with just my average 28-80 lens so im wondering what caused this. obviously theres too much light but iknew this and was going to just darken it in photoshop a little but now this white strip is just killing the photo so does anyone have any answers for me?

Your best bet would have been to use a UV filter. The rays can really fuck up pictures sometimes.

I can't tell you about your line problem tho, cause the picture doesn't work.

I talked to a couple of Nikon users today and the consensus is that it's because it's a Nikon. Apparently the Nikon sensors have a hard time with direct light.

Your best chance, as far as filters go, is a polarizer.

You could have easily framed him without the sun being in there.

I don't know anything about Nikon sensors, but when you point the camera directly at the sun your going to get an under exposed shot. Next time use filters, or try not to get the sun in the picture.

yes, it's the nikon sensor. no love for the sun shots.

get a good UV filter and it takes care of it

The point was that if your shooting in manual, you can exclude the sun from the view finder while setting the exposure and then recompose.
