This summer, I'll be helping lead a trip to Northern Uganda with my rugby team with an organization called Gainline Africa.
Uganda was in a state of despair after it's civil war in the 1980s. The north was gravely affected, regarded as the worst part of Uganda. Sadly,up until this day, they are still not at the socioeconomic level of the south.
4 years ago, the founders of Gainline went to Uganda with the intentions of helping build community in Northern Uganda. They sat with community leaders and members in Gulu, discussing how they would be able to do so.
The north has always been famed for it's rugby talent so, Gainline established their organization, using rugby as a vehicle for improvement, awareness and the empowerment of youth.
This trip is different compared to most organizations and charities' efforts. Gainline is catering to what the community wants and what will make them successful and self-sustainable. We are not going to Africa to impose the western world's way of life and promote the common 'colonialist' way of thinking (eg. Donations of mass amounts of clothing, food etc). We are going to learn from African culture and make a connection between Canadian and Ugandan clubs whilst building community. Though, we will be helping in the renovation of a local gym, chores at a rhino sanctuary and much more.
