Help me decide

Im going on a 3week trip to Costa Rica and Im torn between what camera I should bring, my options

a canon film camera with a 50prime

t2i with a 50 prime

what would you guys bring? Ive never shot film and Ive been having this urge to and Im thinking this trip would be a great time to try it out, Im almost certain that the canon camera is better than the vivitar and i would just buy a 50mm FD prime to put on it. My only problem is that I might want to shoot some video while Im there too, and Ive never used a film camera before in my life. Which leans me towards bringing my t2i. What would you guys chose? And if you chose to bring a film camera would you shoot b&w or color?

There's a bigining to everything. In the end, shooting with film isn't so hard, you just have to be more aware of photography techniques and a little more understanding of the camera itself. But why wouldn't you take both ? Or maybe you can't.

If you entend to edit what you will shoot, then you might regret your digital camera if you take the film camera. If you think this trip can be covered with authentic film photos, then don't bother, take the film camera. It's only a question of "Do you really intend to shoot videos or not". you know better.

i've only ever played around with one of my dads old nikon film cameras, so i'm no wealth of information, but what i would say is that, unless you intend to carry around a ton of spare film, you might find yourself feeling limited to how many shot you can actually take. for instance, you see something cool, you may want to take 5+ photos of it, from different angles, distances etc. that 1/5th of a roll of film gone straight away. I'm assuming you're going to be seeing a pretty solid amount of stuff that you are going to want to take shots of if your travelling for 3 months.

I was in a similar predicament to you, im going to Barcelona next week and was considering buying an olympus om10 off a friend, rather than taking my t3i, just because its smaller and im staying in a hostel with shared bedrooms so i would worry about it being stolen, but i ended up thinking that it was just easier to bring my t3i and be super careful and make sure its locked up when im not using it.

So for sheer practicality i would go with your t2i. I think unless you're prepared to bring alot of fil, and not be worried about shots not turning out exactly right then the film camera might be better.

Take both? they're both pretty small, Im sure you're not taking a ton of luggage but still, im sure there is room for both.

I would take both, but I know that Id just be shuffling between cameras the whole time.

Im leaning towards taking my t2i, now I could take my friends canon 28mm prime 1.8, or his canon 50mm prime,(Im pretty sure its a f1.8?0 or buy a vintage one off ebay or something.

So what focal length would you chose?

Doesn't seem like a hassle to me at all, then you don't have to choose until the time comes.

This, if you need to get something tighter just crop it in post, more than enough MP in your t2i, but it's near impossible to add width in post.

both f/1.8 so the only differences are the dof, weight, and price imo, heck why not bring both? a 50 will fit in a jacket pocket.

ya its just I have a backpacking backpack and everything has to be in my pack, which is pushing me towards just one camera with a short lens

Take both.

Send full rolls of film to your home whenever you come across a post-office.

Your film camera will (most likely) still operate even when the eternal battery runs out, in some rural areas charging a t2i camera battery will be tricky.

What feels right? Seriously, that's what matters.

What lens to bring doesn't matter if you don't like the focal length or don't think it's appropriate. I like shooting long personally, so I would bring the 50, but that's me. Do you like shooting wide more? then bring the 28!
