Alright guys, I have a 2001 volvo xc70 and its a pretty nice car with good pickup and everything but it just doesnt handle as well in the snow.

but other than that, im going to give it to my mom and shes gonna buy me a car.. yes im very lucky...

Do you all have any ideas, im going to be a freshman at CU next year and want to drive back and forth to breck and the rest of vail resorts etc. as much as possible.

I was at the Subaru dealership today and test drove the outback 4 and 6 cylinder and they were nice, but i feel like i want something different maybe...

I mean yes i want something thats not too small and will handle well, but at the same time is somewhat fun but will also last a long time....

You all have any ideas?? Really need help... price range is pretty large actually... nothing over like 28k but want to stay in the 25k max..

and if its used then i dont wanna spend more than like 18k probably

yeah i def recommend getting some sort of subaru. awd, handle awesome in snow, real fun cars to drive. i myself have an impreza and i dont think ill ever get another type of car

25k max? really dude? get a DOPE semi used car. STI's and such. girls will jump on your dick at cu with an sti. well, its CU who am i kidding, theyll jump on you anyway

you can get a way nicer used car for how much that is. just find one only a few years old thats still in new condition. and go with a suby. i have a 20 year old legacy wagon and its a fucking champ

not true at all...

but, if you don't want a suby, i'd recommend a sick jeep, a mitsubishi lancer evo, or i dunno... haha

Im goin to CU next year also, and i have a jeep. but if i were you, i'd get this Toyota Cruiser, i've always wanted to lift and make one of these look bad ass because i think it's the perfect winter and summer vehicle haha

i would look at a hard top wrangler. so dope when you throw the top down and go on safaris.
I myself have an audi a4 and have driven a lot of cars and i cant say i would ever get anything but that, unless it was an s4 lol

I have an 06 Impreza 2.5i wagon that I got last year for 13k ish, and love it to death. I know you think you want something larger, like an outback or legacy, but think about if you really need that. Even without racks, you can fold down just one rear seat and carry 3 friends and their gear. I have ski racks, so I can haul 4 buddies and tons of gear. I can even carry my FR bike with both wheels left on, I just have to leave the tailgate open. The only thing I can't really do is sleep in it, other than just by laying down the front seat, which isnt a big deal at all.

OH, and even without a turbo, it is an absolute BLAST to drive. An OBS is the same as my car, just with more rugged suspension and a different interior and different color body molding.

And guys recommending R32s and STIs, he said that if he went used, he would want to stay under 18k, keep that in mind.

not really, working on Subaru's flat engines take a bit longer than others and thus labor cost get a bit higher.

how do you feel about right hand drive? you can get a nissan stegea rs. it has a skyline engine and 4wd system, but with a wagon body.

if you're not into RHD a audi A4 is within budget.

and yea im starting to lean towards an impreza wagon... i was just worried about space.. and from the sounds of it, it sounds like its no problem.

id probably get it new considering its only like a 20k msrp car

Word. I mean, I always thought it would be cool to have a lot of cargo space but honestly can you really think of an instance where you would need it?

Personally, if I were going to get an 08+ (like you're considering), I would look into getting the Outback Sport. To me, the newer base 2.5i wagons don't look so hot, but I like the look of the newer OBS a lot,

if you enjoy driving, you don't want to get a truck, and will indeed regret it. trucks are fun for their go-anywhere utility, and if you are mudding, then yes they can be fun, but driving a truck around the city or on the highway or whatever sucks ass. also, most trucks won't do as well as most subarus in snow, unless there is like 2 feet on the ground

theres that whole, go anywhere thing...

if you never want to leave the street a subie would be fine...

and driving a truck really doesn't suck, maybe not quite as nimble, but theyre still enjoyable to drive.

unless you actually have places nearby to go do serious muddin, most people wont actually really drive offroad. i mean sure, everyone drives dirt roads or goes over some snowy field or whatever every once in a while, but this can be done in any subie.

and i am speaking from experience.

I have an 06 subaru impreza 2.5i wagon and a 99 chevy tahoe. i hate driving the truck. when im driving my subie, i love pinning it around turns and feeling the g forces, or clutching out quickly around a corner and letting the wheels spin a little, and being super nimble through traffic, and being super stable on the freeway. the truck is just slow and lumbering and dumbed-down, and i really dont like driving it other than if im doing something stupid, like driving up some dirt/mud hill that i shouldnt be

Actually they say the STI is not recommended for winter driving due to its HP, even though its AWD. Dont get a WRX of any kind, too many people have those here. Get something different. I have a new F-150 and it does really good on gas and does great in the snow.

theres a difference between a tahoe... and other trucks.

just sayin'

compare:

maybe im just a hick, but id take the taco any day.

besides, a truck > a car when it comes to safety.

my friend just got an A6.

its a super nice car. but lets just say it was far from cheap. even used.

Thread Creator. What about a Chevy Avalanche? throw a roof rack or box on the top and its a pretty sick ski vehicle. (decent MPG too) but who am i kidding your parents are buying you a 25 thousand dollar car, gas is the least of your worries ;)

even if you exclude the wayward handling and a high center of gravity making them more likely to get in an accident, they're still less safe being body on frame and built strongly to take loads. ever heard of a crumple zone?

You could get a WRX, or that new Evo that came out that is in the price range. You could do a GTI, you could do a Mazda Speed 3, you could do a Chevy Cobalt Turbo SS (amazing car for a great price but good luck finding one, I couldn't). You could do an Audi A4 maybe, and I think maybe that is in the Mustang GT's range. You could do a VW R32.
You could do the WRX, Evo thing, GTI, MS3, or Cobalt Turbo pimped out with a lot of options but would have to do a Mustang GT, real Evo, R32, or A4 base base model.

thank god the red neck stepped in

Get a truck, large, great in poor weather, plenty of space in the bed, some have decent gas even now adays, power and pick up plus, you can't go wrong with a F-150 or Ford raptor?

this is true. however, i feel like the op, if he got a truck, would get a truck for a truck's sake (ie one built for offroad) rather than basically a racecar that happens to be shaped like a truck (like a TRD street or a ram srt10)

Get a audi wagon w/ a turbo it wont be quite as good in the snow as a outback but since you are use to a car with a little get up and go the audi would be what you are looking for...my 07 outback four banger dossent get up and go very quick but gets 27mpg

outback or forester xt would be a bit more fun if thats what youre looking for. also a jeep is always a great choice.

Get an 04 VW r32

People who are saying you cant get them for under 25k? BS

Dont get the 2008. First, you will be able to get the 2004 for cheaper, and IMO it looks much cleaner, and the 2004 doesnt have the DSG transmission with the paddle shifters, which are cool and all, but disconnect the driver from a true driving experience IMO. This particular R32 (the picture) has a jetta front end, which is what I would do if I bought one probably, such a sexy look.

Here's one for 21k with only a few mods and low miles, if you search the forums on there you can find turbo R's as well, which would beat at STI anyday
