Helmets

It does surprise me how so many pro/sponsored skiers do all this gnarly insane shit without wearing helmets, especially urban skiers.

I mean yeah helmets aren't the coolest thing in the world, I get it. But just one slip could lead to a cracked skull and maybe death, or worse -permanent disablement ? I'd never dream of trying that stuff without a helmet, and honestly I'm surprised you don't hear more horror stories about urban / park skiers seriously hurting themselves.

Not wearing a helmet is selfish. Think about your family and friends before ya leave your brains oozing out on a rock that was hiding in the pow. There's no avoiding an eventual hit to the head. I guess being cool and having a good "kit" is more important than giving the family some peace of mind? But that's just skiing... As long as these dudes have a good image and people like their skiing, they don't care.

Hitting jumps is selfish. You could jump into an airbag or foam pit but you choose ice you selfish bastard.

coming from someone who has a quadrapalegic loved one as a result of skiing, this is not how it works.

They are pro, so I am sure they know there limitations and what they are comfortable with. I am sure if they didn't feel comfortable and confident throwing a trick they would probably have a helmet on. But you never know what can happen without a helmet so be safe.

you let people make their own choices like a reasonable adult and take their own calculated risks.

Skiing is a risk in general. Not wearing a helmet is more than a risk, it's completely idiotic. Why is wearing a seatbelt in a car required?

if skiing is a risk why do it then? I should note that the person I mentioned above was wearing a helmet when they crashed, and it basically was a freak accident. That doesn't stop me from skiing, even though I take considerably more risks then they did.

I wear a helmet when I'm doing something uncomfortable, like spinning big jumps or mobbing through the woods, but when I'm just cruising in the spring or hitting some bumps its not different then walking down the sidewalk.

Not wearing a helmet when your uncomfortable is stupid. But skiing isn't some roll of the dice, you make it as risky or simple as you want. Some people are just comfortable enough with their skiing that they do not feel the need to wear a helmet.

HOT TAKE: every helmet thread is more enlightening and better than the one before it

my bad, not been here long hadn't seen it done before

People skiing pow often have little to no reason to wear a helmet, nevertheless I always wear a helmet no matter the situation, at this point it would just feel weird not to. Tho I see no problem with not wearing a helmet if you are just doing chill stuff.

Hey Smartass, Seat belts aren't always required. Live free or die, New Hampshire... If your're an adult you should be able to make your own decisions. Just like all other aspects of life hahaha.

Who ya calling smartass, fatass? New Hampshire is lame.

Helmets are always a good idea, if I never wore one my grave stone would of said "died February 2017". I get if a pro is so confident in their abilities that they don't wear one while just having some fun in the park or just shredding powder, but if your going to huck the shit that the pros do now, you really should think about wearing a brain bucket.

I don't think anyone is arguing that people should be forced to wear helmets, I know people can make their own decisions, but that doesn't mean that its not objectively more idiotic to not wear one.

It's like not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle/bicycle: as long as you don't fall...no problem. The day you take a bad fall, or someone crashes into you..that's another story. You can never control what other people might do.

Helmets are one thing (although it was in my understanding that they were cool now), what I'd like to know is how many pros wear back protectors. Cuz that can get pretty gnarly too.

Michael Schumacher comes to mind?

Experienced skier who actually WAS wearing a helmet, wasn't even doing any mad shit like sponsored skiers do these days.. one knock to his head and his life is basically over. My point is that you never know what could happen, any urban skier who doesn't wear a helmet, no matter how skilled they are, is a fuckin dumbass imo.

All I'm saying is people can make their own choices wether it's a bad decision or not, tho it's definitely much more consequential in urban, my comment was more directed toward powder and big mtn skiing

Seat belt laws are fucking retarded. If fat people can eat shitty food and slam cokes, why the hell is it a law to wear a seat belt? Why not ban motorcycles while we're at it.

Not wearing a seat belt is dumb, but why does it need to be a law? Running with scissors is dumb, but does it need to be illegal?

The only helmet and seat belt laws should be for children below a certain age.

Well its a never ending thing. Sure its just because lookin cool and also more comfy. So all of us do stuff like that like

just maybe its not killing you that fast as not wearing a helmet. At the end you should decide, not others for you.

I am quite fond of my brain bucket, the only times I've ever skied without it was on my backyard setup.

Safety is steezy...the sports evolving. My opinion. But you could get kicked in the head playing soccer all the same. The usual reason I've heard is purely comfort based. One might argue, or be frank, it's not traditional to wear helmets in any case. Let's all agree to disagree. (8

sometimes i just go skiing and crash and hit my head but i have a helmet on and it goes spinny imagine if i didnt have a helemt

the thing with helmets is that quite honestly its not gonna hurt to wear one. and when that day comes where you under rotate and get shit-whipped you'll be glad you had it on. because a $80 helmet is a hell of a lot cheaper than brain surgery (unless your Canadian then fuck it its free).

im not here to make any judgments about wearing helmets, in the end people are gonna do what they want to do, but if your only problems with helmets are comfort/appearance, they make helmets that look pretty sick imo and if you did enough looking you could probably find one that is comfortable too

Also how did this post get over 4k views in less than a week haha

I think the facebook NS page shared it. It's really a shame how many views on this site come from facebook kids. So many kids just follow links that ns posts on facebook and never contribute to the site.
