I've been riding for almost 20 years. And the second year I was skiing my mom dumped a helmet on my lid and said, "If I ever catch you without this on, it's goodbye skis and goodbye season's pass." So, even though it felt like I was the only loser on the mountain with a neon race helmet, I kept it.
About 9 years ago, I suffered another big fall in a park. I snapped my humerus and broke my hand... two surgeries and many months later I was finally able to get out on skis... water skis. My doctor explained that estimating from the severity of the injuries I sustained, had I not been wearing a helmet I would almost certainly be a vegetable today. Knowing that, and also losing one of my brothers to a brain injury it's nothing to mess around with.
Even though I don't ski much park anymore I always wear one. But this thread is missing a KEY POINT, wear a properly rated helmet that FITS YOU. Seeing some park riders with just a skate helmet over a thin beanie or flat brim is not going to protect you nearly as well as a snug helmet.
As with most people in this thread I've had some of my worst crashes doing simple things, and gotten away unscathed from what seemed like certain tragedy.
If you don't wear one, that's fine, be careful. If you do wear one, wear one that fits, and be careful. It's not a superman's cape, it's just helmet.
