Helmets Beneficial?

Well I was wondering how important these things are. When just starting freeskiing do they help you be more confident? How much do they cost regularly for a decent one? I don't know if I need one, because I don't plan on doing inverts till I get better at spins.

i use a helmet because you never know what others are doing, for example i was skiing the first day last year and some snowboarders cut in front of me while i was overtaking them and it was in front of a step down on a slope so i crashed head first into a ski instructor and a pupil which were standing behind!!! this step down in the middle of the slope!! i hit them so hard with my head that the female pupil even lost both skis just standing on the slope...yeah i was pretty fast cause i wanted to jump...my chrome helmet was heavily scratched and my goggle broke...you see if i hadn't worn a helmet my head would have been scratched...btw my helmt is a giro sst and it was about 120$...personally i think that you should always wear a helmet even if you're not doing inverts because you knever know what could happen...you could loose your ski or some idiots could hit you...and for inverts, also wear a back protector...

1. Helmets generally keep your head warmer than toques.

2. Most are light enough that you don't notice them after a few days.

3. Great for tree skiing - small branches just bounce off.

4. Added confidence*.

* This is not to be mistaken for extreme offsetting behaviour. i.e. I may ski lines I wouldn't consider otherwise (be it location or speed), but, I won't thoughtlessly go hucking my carcass off an unscoped jump because of the presence of a helmet. Save that for the second lap!

 
helmets are for people that generally land on there head..... if your planning on landing on your head or getting hit by little branches in the head then get one..... but if you plan to land on your feet like the most of us on this site then a helmet isnt really nesisary (sp)

yeah, mine worked. I cracked it doing something and I don't remember but that could have been my skull. I had no long term brain damage.

Mine helps me so much! And when the bar comes down sometimes i smack my head off of it. So many scratches on my helmet from that...

its seems that the only times i dont wear them are days that im skiing something other than park for more than half the day....well sometimes i dont wear them in the park....but i sometimes get hurt too....so i dont know, i think it helps keep the headaches away

helmets are not for people that land on there head, you can hit your head pretty hard doing anything, most of the time when i hit it, im not even jumping

you want one, mine has DEFIANTELY saved my ass numerous times. also even on spins they can help, say youre starting out on spinning (which im guessing you are) youre not gonig to get youre 3 arond perfectly the first time. same with youre 180. youre gonna overrotate or underrotate and when that happens, edges get caught and youre bound to wack yorue head on the landing. its def gonna haelp you out.

helmets are a good idea. great for the trees because like someone else said branches hitting you plus if you do crash you're not slamming your skull on a tree.

for rails its a good idea when learning in case you have major balance problems. rails to the back of the skull hurt like a bitch and leave one hell of a headache.

skiing on hard packs or ice like in the east. theres some pretty shitty hard landings that will hurt if you slam your head back

You only have one brain, you might as well get all the protection you can for it. If you screw it up, it's for life.

Helmets give me more confidence and they can save your ass. Yes, if you land on your head it is still going to hurt. You can still get a concussion. But the helmet absorbs alot of the impact that your head would've normally taken if you didn't have it.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

first off, think about what a helmet does...you probably don't need to ask this question.

Second, anyone that says you don't need a helmet is a an idiot. I don't know anyone that is perfect at jumping and never falls. I have saved myself numerous serious concussion by having them. Buy one. Cheap one = $40. Expensive anywhere up around $150.

Dude, get a helmet mine has saved me more then a few times and my freands also. Spending 150$ on a helmet is worth it cuse it only takes one good hit and your fucked.

then buy a multi impact helmet dumbass...i wear one at all times...i came round a croner one day and a pole was flying in the air and hit me in the head...i had no idea where it came from but it smoked me good...thanks to the lid im not talking with a stutter...

helmets help a lot. if you're planning on skiing trees sliding rails, i definetaly suggest the investment. think of it this way: how much is a helmet? how much is a hospital bill you get cuz you needed stiches from a rail? they are really warm anyways cuz they cover a lot more of your head than a regular beanie

Helmets are definately worth it, my friend did a 3 in the pipe and bailed while wearin his helmet, he had a concussion, but if he didn't have his helmet he would have died, or they would have airlifted him to dartmoth NH to drill holes in his head to relieve the pressure, and then after that whole operation if he survived he probably would have been a retard, but yeah in my opinion there worth it

dspin7x, im not dumb for saying a helmet is for landing on your head... what else would it be used for.... i dont land on my head and i never plan on doing it so im not going to get a helmet.... and also why do you have to be so negative i would never wish something like landing on your head unto anyone else.... thats just inconsiderate

do you hit big jumps man? cuz overrotating on a big jump or casing it switch will most likely send you on your back or your side. if you're carrying enough momentum you can't stop your head from hitting the ground, and if you for some reason have really strong neck muscles and you stop your head form hitting, you'll get a concussion from it anyways.

despite what you think helmets aren't for 'landing on your head'. when you land on your head a concussion and actual head injury is probably not your biggest worry. it takes around 45 lbs of pressure to break a persons neck. but hitting you head on the side or back is what will give you a concussion, and you can't always control that you can't recover from every trick.

i think im gonna start wearing a helmet when i ski from now on heres why

i went to ottawa with the school this summer just last week, at one of the museams my teacher triped and fell over a sidewalk hit her head pretty hard but got right back up and she was ok so the next day we were there we went to another museam and my teacher didnt come cause the other teachers said she was nt feeling well so we were like ok then on the bus ride home from ottawa my theacher starts having a seasure and its a really bad one she is chokeing on her tounge and stuff really freaky since me and my friend dave were in the next seat over we had to stop the bus and call for an ambulance my teachers husband is on the cell phone calling the ambulance and is like ' she hit her head and she got up fine but then she started having seasures 15 so far '( i dont know why she didnt go to the hospital on the first one i guess not to scare the kids or somthing witc is pretty stupid cause every one was scared to death whale she was screaming and chokeing ) any way the ambulance comes finaly and takes her and her husband awaw (her husband had really deep cuts on his hand from trying to keep her from swallowing her tunge with his hand ) it turns out that she had a concussion and almost died from not going to the hospital right away

im gonna wear a helmet when i ski because i dont want that happining to me on the hill :|

ya the differnce between you and clausen is he is a good skier and was joking when he made that comment. you on the other hand suck and garaunte if you arent a total pussy will get a concussion skiing which once you have one and you are up all night puking with a huge headache you wish you would have had a helmet

i wear a boeri chameleon and a boeri moto x with the visor, sick hlemets i didnt pay for but have def saved my ass.. theres clip in here somewhere of my doin a flair to deck when i crashed i slammed my head and if i didnt have the helmet on i woulda had worse than a concussion. then theres times where ive come off a rail to far back and slammed my hip and my head on the snow.. i wear my helmet all the time wen i jump.. its a lot safer that way. i suggest getting some sorta helmet

i have a helmet but it looks mad goofy. i stopped wearing it cause it never saved me. all i got was old guys hitting me on the head asking me if it hurt. i have hit my head a couple times, but its not usually head trauma that causes injury as much as it would be a neck strain or even break.
