Helmet?

This season is going to be only my second "real" ski season (I've been skiing for about 5 years, but my limited mountain access and consistent injuries have held me back). I progressed a TON last season and I'm thinking this season I should get a helmet.

I don't ski park AT ALL. I dont think I took one park run last season. I ski trees as much as possible, and when that's not an option, I'm either bombing groomers or skiing moguls.

With as much time as I spend skiing in the trees, do you think I should get a helmet? And what limitations do helmets have? I've always just worn beanies.... Are helmets not as warm? Should I wear a beanie under my helmet?

I'm a helmet n00b

You should totally get a helmet. They are comfy as fuck and keep your head warm. The Park is so gnar nowadays its almost a necessity, unless you got enough steeze and swagger to protect your head.

I ski 50/50 pArk to all mountain and all of my concussions have occurred while skiing trees. Definitely get a helmet, they're generally warmer than a beanie you just gotta get one that's gonna be comfortable, I really like berns if you want to put a beanie underneath

I've had most of my bangs to the head outside of the park actually. Nothing ever too serious thankfully, but a couple of hits that I was very glad to have a helmet on, one recently was due to low visibility and hitting a bump on a rather steep groomer that flipped me over and landed me on my head.

You hear a lot of stuff about kids getting killed that might have been avoided by wearing helmet, especially in snowboarding, best to be on the safe side imo.

They're warm, you probably won't need a hat under it but you might on cold days. Get a Giro. Very comfortable and warm and will help hold your goggles in place, there's no disadvantages.

Defiantly helmet no question, helmets have been the difference between life and death in some cases.

Yeah i rock one and I ski a ton of trees. It'll help when you're diggin in deep for lines. Instead of a beaine, get a baclava.

Definitely get one. You have a lot of options to choose from, so go to your local shop and try a bunch on, and bring your goggles and a beanie with you, especially if you're planning to go with hat and goggles under helmet. If you are, look for a helmet that has removable padding in the back as that will make it much more comfortable.

Whether or not to wear a hat depends a lot on the conditions. For me, a helmet with totally removable padding is best because I ski a lot in the spring and summer, when I definitely don't need a hat, and often don't even use goggles because they're too hot. In the winter, I can wear my beanie and goggles underneath, and in the summer, I can put the padding in and it fits without the beanie so I can get some ventilation.

Think about what conditions you ski in throughout the season and go from there.

Probably go to a ski shop were you live and just try on a couple, don't wanna order one offline and have it arrive to not fit you or not be what you had in mind

Get a helmet OP

I've had some crashes were I would've gotten seriously screwed up if it weren't for my helmet.

And their comfy

helmets are a must. and not just for yourself, but to protect your self from the people around you. I cant tell you how many times I've been slammed into by some noob makin texas turns. in-mold helmets are lighter than shell construction & helmets will keep your dome warm cuz youll actually allow your head to breathe!

I'd be more inclined to wear a helmet in trees since i got lost once and ended up double ejecting into a stream but i always wear a helmet no matter where i am.

Bought a POC Receptor Bug last season and it's one of the safest helmets I've ever had. It's light, compatible with almost every kind of goggles, and it helps a lot, OP. I love mine because it's warm, safe, and has a lot of venting in the helmet.

there's no downside for wearing helmets whereas if you hit something without one, you might fucking die

i don't get people who don't wear helmets... they are warm and comfy as fuck so much better than some balaclava

The main limitation of most helmets is the "one and done" helmet flaw. What this means is that if you take one major blow to your helmet you need to replace it.

Most kids are too poor to follow this policy which means they really should be looking at some of the new MIPS helmetsor the new Giro softshell helmet.

Don’t Wear a Beanie or Hat Under Your Helmet. “This is one of the biggest fashion misconceptions out there,” says Greg Bearce, supervisor at Pete Lanes Warm Springs. “A beanie is var far the worst thing you can wear under a helmet because it prevents the helmet from doing its job,” adds Bearce, “it just allows for too much movement, doesn’t let the helmet do what it was designed to do and can lead to the compression injuries that cause concussions.” Bearce notes that some of the really thin skull caps can work under helmets because they conform exactly to the head. But when in doubt, just avoid any thicker under layers–having the room to fit a hat or beanie probably means that the helmet is too big and is not a proper fit anyway. - Source
