Helmet Hat?

Does anyone know where I can find a link to that website that talks about a technology that allows hats to take on differetn properties when there is some impact so that they behave like a helmet?

Wow, thats amazing looking stuff. I dont get how they can say it has better performance than a helmet though? How much protection do you guys think it would actually have for the head? Id buy one either way though, because, I dont wear my helmet all the time normally but it worries me, because I have a historry of head injury.

Its too bad the american dollor means shit right now, or I would totoally buy one, it would 82 dollors for us right now.

I think they mean it's less annoying than a real helmeté It's probably as protective as a hard hat, or a bit less. I'd like to know. Anyone has ever tried one of those?

I'm not sure about that, where'd you see it?

It's probably less cumbersome, but as for being more protective, I don't know.

And to the guy asking where you can get them... it doesn't look like they actually manufacture products under their own brand name. Seems more like they sell their technology to companies... Sessions, for example, are advertising their new layering with d3o technology all over their website. SixSixOne (for those of you who bike) also have knee pads with d3o, Quiksilver have a hat with d3o.

Check out their products here:http://d3olab.com/products.php?section=4

I'm liking the Quiksilver hat, as well as the 'Ignite' hat, it says 'Out Winter 07/08'... it should be out soon?

Personally, I don't think these pants look too bad either

We've been having a long talk about that stuff a while ago, me and my shop guy. We're both a bit sceptical about it (for the record he doesn't sell any products featuring it) but he has seen the technology first hand and said it was pretty incredible. For a demo they had a ball D3O, which was very soft, but as soon as you dropped it or punshed it, it got extremely hard he said, it's also being used in motorsports already.

My biggest concern is, does the whole area gets stiff and absorbs the impact or does just a small surrounding near the area of impact hardens? If the latter, then it still wouldn't give you sufficient protection when hitting a rock/ice/branch. It would only/mostly protect you from... damn, don't know the english word... but I mean cuts and scratches and all that (abressions?), but you could still crush your skull with one of those on.

I think the word you're looking for is abrasions...

I think it might protect you from blunt forces... say... landing on a rail. I think it works by spreading the impact across a larger surface area... so less pressure on a certain area. I agree, it wouldn't protect you from branches and rocks, but it'll be better than your average beanie.

helmets are big for a reason. to absorb the shock and dampen it before it gets to your head. this is like wearing an iron helmet. yes, it gets hard but there is no absorbtion.

It would be cool if they were to line a hard hat with it, it could be thin, and it seems like it might help conussions and stuff

I feel like even if the whole thing gets hard if you hit your head hard on a jump you'll just be slamming your head into your hat instead of the ground, so I dont think it could really protect from concussions and stuff like that. sounds cool though definitely better than just a hat.

they should maybe put this shit in the lining of a helmet? that seems like it would bombproof. i would probably smash my head off chairlifts and shit to scare the hell out of people.

red made a "padded hat" last yr, it was the dumb'st thing ive ever seen, just a big wollen hat with helmet padding on the inside.. made you look like a fag.... ive got a friend with dreads who can put a regular touque on and have the same affect haha

Nah, I wouldn't put it in such a black-white way like you do.

btw, D3O is featured in more products then hats, but again. I want to know about it's absortion properties. Can't find anything about it on their website, not that I read it very concentrated

does anyone know how long it takes to soften up again cause u dont want a stiff helmet for an hour after each bail

I think its good for times you dont want to use a helmet, like outside of the park. They would have to be a decent price though, other wise I would just invest in 2 types of helmets, a bern style one, and something rated better.
