Helmet camera popularity

With the growing popularity of helmet cameras, skiing is only going to get better. Currently I would say there are at least 2 or 3 epic edits made a month nowadays by skiers such as yourself and that is on the increase. Also skiing with a helmet camera makes you more concious of how you ski and how it will look on playback and makes you kinda step it up a level. Those who say freeskiing is a dying sport can think again.

Discuss.

reviewing my footage on helmet cam definately improved my big mountain skiing
i use my poles a lot more + i used to sideslip a lot and prefer turning to the right while now i focus on charging it, no sideslipping and making good linked turns, the footage looks so much better + im sure my skiing does now as well :)

At Tremblant 1 in 5 kids has one on at all times. I don't enjoy it nor do I enjoy the hundreds of gopro edits that come from them every sunday night. Ski for the memories and the experience. There is a time to film of course, but thats not everyday. Leave the gopro at home, feel the breeze on your face and talk about the day over a beer at the bar with friends apres.

How does having a GoPro hinder your ability to do these things? Those gapers sporting helmet cams are one of the reasons we can buy a full hd camera for only $300.

exactly, so what's wrong with a gopro? i don't even make edits with my footage most of the time, i just have it so i can look back on it sometimes and be like man that was a fun day....

there's really no question about it, filming with a gopro isn't anything like filming with a real camera....
it fits in a pocket so you don't need a backpackits mounted on your helmet and ready to film in less than the time it takes to take the lift...
and you dont even need your hands to get good footage, just one click to start and one click to stop and you can relive your skiing day that evening while eating dinner :)

there are some pretty cools vids out there showing what kind of epic winter it really was. the HD is just amazing & much of the dramatic would be lost with a regular SD camera. now, i do agree that many people video almost their whole day on the mountain, but they can do whatever they want with their camera.

any pref's: contour vs gopro?

anyone who hates on kids with go pros is an idiot. there just trying to have a good time just like you are so let them do whatever they want

I'll be honest the constant gopro editsof someone cruising down a mellow pow run are good old quick. Unless you're doing something gnarly don't make an edit. Plus any beater can make a gopro edit and make themselves look half decent.

i agree with the canadian youngbuck above. gopros are great for filming and getting multiple angles, but dont ride with one every single day. its just not necessary. yes, im not gonna lie, the go pro comes out pretty much every bluebird park day or deep pow day, but we only get bluebird days maybe once a week if were super lucky. more realistically once or twice a month. most days are in or under the clouds. and pow days worthy of a go pro are prolly 5-10 a season.

i always bring it with me to the mountain, but prolly 90% of the time it stays in the car.

Am I the only one enjoying POV-edits?
Ok, an edit/movie with both pov and standard cameras are of course more entertaining to watch. But I really love all the sick pov-edits out there

LOVE helmet cams for pow edits. not much for park edits though. those should be shot by secondary cameramen

i use my gopro for everything. everything. it is great, i live it because i take it everywhere and film everything and its hd and its compact and waterproof.

I completely agree. What seems like the slightest hesitation on lines/drops when you're actually skiing is magnified considerably when you're watching the footage back. It's the perfect reminder/incentive to always try and ski more aggressively and more fluidly, even in technical terrain.

Another thing POV filming has made me notice is that when you ski the same resort/same terrain a lot it's easy to get into the habit of just hitting the same lines and same drops over and over, partly because they're just fun but partly because you get comfortable - you know where the rocks are, what the take-offs/landings are like etc. Reviewing duplicated footage gives you a kick in the ass to go exploring and find new features or to ski the same terrain a different way.

They caught on because it is a inexpensive camera to shoot skiing and you get HD. I have one myself, but I don't bring it out often. It usually just stays in my pocket during a day of skiing. I do enjoy having one for the 1-3 powder days we get a year.

There is a gopro massacre on the mountain, their are tons on my home mountain. The kids that always have one on can do what they want. It's their camera and their fun.

I once saw a boarder at tremblant with a 3d gopro set on his head, and then he was holding one on a pole in front of him. All to slip/slide down a blue run on his back edge.

who wants to hear a cool story bro?

i got a go pro in like 2006 when they just came out, my dad used it for car racing and i used it for skiing, sooooo many people thought i was really gay looking and soooo many people became dicks to me that i stopped using it. next season every group of friends had one, next season many people had them and used multiple angles, the next year everyone had one... and they all called me gay for having one....

helmet cams for me gopro has definetly improved my big mountain skiing seeing the cliff that cliff u hit over and over is awsome to me but i think we should keep POV to big mountain just looks like a big blur in the park
