I dont believe i have seen this posted yet its worth a watch.

Heres the article/video from freeskier @http://community.freeskier.com/articles/article.php?article_id=3279

Our friends at Black Diamond and Avalung just sent over this video today. If you haven’t seen it yet, do it now.

It’s

a pretty sobering video. Skier Chris Cardello is riding a line in

Haines with a helmet cam for Rage Films. An avalanche breaks off all

around him, and he’s buried, while the cam continues to roll. He

manages to get his Avalung into his mouth, and thanks to a speedy

rescue, he’s pulled out alive after just five minutes. The incident

happened last April, but it’s just as relevant today as ever.

Chris

described it like this: “When the slide propagated, I tried to remain

as composed as possible and make sure my AvaLung was in. As I was

getting buried and the slide slowed, I threw one hand up and with my

other hand I grasped the AvaLung, which had been ripped out of my mouth

during the turbulent ride. While I was buried, I tried to be as calm as

possible—I knew my hand was exposed so my crew would be digging me out

shortly. I was able to breathe through the AvaLung, but it was

difficult due to the snow jammed down my throat.”

Scary stuff.

Not that I need this or anything in Western Pennsylvania .. /sigh
Someone explain to me in easier terms how this works? I have no audio on this computer.

Are plastic shovels really that bad?

or are just most plastic shovels bad?

im thinking about getting an ortovox cougar, im pretty sure it wont break, but is aluminum really that much better because i know of a lot of aluminum shovels that if you put pressure on them in a strange direction, especially below freezin temperatures, that aluminum shovels break sooner than the bendier lexan ones...

its not just that lexan blades break more frequently (which they do) its that once avy debris settles it can be as solid as concrete, so a plastic blade just doesn't have the ability to effectively dig through. While heavier, a steel blade is much better for chopping away at the dense snow. Any shovel will break if you are constantly trying to "pry" with it, so like everything else its good to practice and learn to use it effectively.

ya i noticed his shovel too i wouldnt trust plastic especially in very cold temps plastic get more and more brittle, better hope theres no ice involved

In this instance, he really didn't need it, unless he had been buried for more than 15 minutes. But yes, everyone in the bc should use one and they are good.
