anybody here gone heli sking? looking to go some place in canda what are some good company that run out there or oyut west?

CMH is good. powder has a huge heli and cat skiing operations listing by region in their new issue, check that out. what part of canada? if youre near kicking horse purcell's looks legit

DO NOT under any circumstances go to cmh ok? Its like farming with them- they literally "plough" powder fields. You have to stay right in behind the guide and ski like 20 degree powder fields- no freedom whatsoever...

Mica Creek, Bella Coola, Northern Escape, Last Frontier and Skeena Heliskiing are all super legit in my and my brothers experience. These ops allow YOU to pick what kind of riding you want to do, YOU can pick your lines and most importantly the guides actually know what newschool freeride/bigmtn is because they've all been visited by tgr, msp etc...

My pick would be Mica Creek or Skeena because they both have phenomenal tree skiing, pillows and stuff if the weather's bad as well as killer high alpine terrain, and both allow great autonomy and small groups (4+guide @ Mica).

Good Luck!!

Yup. I've been there. I went late April '06 and skied the deepest snow I've ever skied. It was amazing. The place itself is incredible, the food is UNHEARD of. The skiing was the best though, we skied alot of variety. Lot's of trees, lot's of high alpine. The guide's get to know you real quick and can point out cliffs/pillows/natural features pretty quick. Wait, one sec, I got a picture.

ive been up to wiegeles and it was pretty epic. but do not rule out CMH. they have amazing terrain and it is not like the other guy said.

I did a week at CMH in the Adaments. It was unbelievably good. The other guy who said it was bad is retarded, or spoiled, or both. Basically, CMH has 12 different lodges with different skill ratings, so do a harder lodge and you will have a better time. Admittedly, the alpine shredding is too tame. They do make you ski right behind the guide and shit.. and they even got mad at me a few times because I 'went in the wrong spot'? wtf.. I paid way too much money to go there and they're telling me to stay on the 20 degree slope? obviously not-- I'm going to shred gnar, fuckers. But the tree skiing was super amazingly epic and they give you a lot of freedom to drop lines and shred almost anything. The food there was ridiculously good.. amazing meals on all fronts, and the off hill activities were fun and shit.. internet access, ping pong, pool, foose, TV, shuffle board, all that shit. All in All, I'd like to try a different operation next time to get some younger people to ski with and smaller heli-s. The problem with CMH is that its all balling fucking old school British-gapers who don't think that "shreding-gnar'" is actual vocabulary and I think somewhere like Micah Heli Guides would cater to a demographic that us younger folk would relate to better.

there might have been a good chance of bad avi conditions too. sometimes they wont let you ski the steeper stuff for risk of it sliding.

no I talked to them about it.. they told me that the avi conditions were fine, but that Intrawest (owner of CMH) has strict rules due to liability and that they could loose their jobs if the head guide saw me ripping a little ways away from the main group. THe guides were cool and new all about freeskiing and were good shredders, its just that they had a strict protocol that they adhere to on all and any conditions.

usually if you want to ski the really good and steep shit (of movieesque quality), you have to pay a wicked premium price

So you start by calling me out about cmh, and then go on to agree with most/all of my criticisms of cmh, and in doing so contradict yourself... nice!

Look, I have been lucky enough to travel to many many top heli operations thanks to my brother who works for Elemental Adventure www.eaheliskiing.com and in my experience, heliing at cmh is still crazy fun (of course it is, endless powder duh...) but it has no soul left and for the money spent places like mica creek and bella coola are better. They allow you more freedom, more autonomy, take you to gnarlier stuff and just generally recognise the fact that you are not fat, 55 years old and wearing a neon one-piece...

This thread is worth a bump.....def. some good info.

With the Canadian dollar reaching parity, I hope some heli ops will lower their prices to keep the UK and US people coming in the doors. This should be great for Canadians....hoepfully.

I went snowmobile skiing in the CMH monashee lodges tenure once. Definately SICK TERRAIN. The tree skiing there is steep, well spaced trees and good snow. But yea Go with Mica Heli Guides instead of CMH if you can. The terrain is probobly better than CMH's. Also they have a few drainage basins that have never been logged before, so youd proboly get pretty good scenery.
