Heat stroke?

so i maybe a few months ago someone posted that they were gonna do their first triathlon...which got me thinking "why not?"

i did my first triathlon (yay!) last weekend.

during the race i realized how unprepared i was (not so yay!).

swimming was fine, though it thundered right when i was getting out of the water...so the race was "postponed" and we had to start everything all over again. damn you mother nature.

biking was fun, all flat. not much to say other than road biking is sweet.

heres where it got really fun though....

about a mile into the run i started feeling kinda funny in my tummy,

then when i got a drink of water at the 2nd mile i couldn't keep it down. (all the photos my mum took of me were at this point, so all the pics i have documenting my first tri are of me puking and running...good times...)

then i started to shake and shiver for the last 3 miles. (dry heaving a few times per block)

i'm wondering if this was heat stroke? if it was does this mean i'm more likely to get it in the future? i'm moving to hawaii this wednesday, hoping to do my second tri in november and hoping to get all the advice i can.

like i felt fine right after the finish other than being a little thirsty...

p.s I recomend doing a tri to anyone. finishing is the best feeling and you really learn about the depth of your character/limit of your body.

I'm not sure, it sounds like you were just exhausted and you start to shake and feel cold. I've got that before, although I've never thrown up because I've never had to do a tri before haha, congratulations on that by the way! nice job! Just sounds like you were spent and thats what happens to me. I always thought heat stroke was getting dizzy and like passing out. I've gotten dizzy before, sounds like just a combo of heat stroke and exhaustion to me

well was it really hot out? heat stroke usually comes from a combination of dehydration and hot climate while exercising, so maybe you weren't drinking enough H20? i used to compete in triathlons and i would alway's pre-game it by only drinking water for two days, i would wear a Camelbak everywhere i went and just take a few sips every once in a while. I think my hydration was one of the reasons I did so well in competition, I apply that in every sport i partake in now.

i couldnt swim, because i cant swim i would drown, but running and biking id be fine. only 4 miles? if i read thatt right, pretty short run.

1/4 ocean swim.

15 mile bike.

5 mile run.

longest five mile run of my life. the worst was i sprinted what i thought was the last block and then got the pleasant suprise that i wasn't done and had another block to jog.

hmm, im a distance runner so 5 miles would be pretty easy, and bike riding, kudos for the swim though. i never learned to swim myself haha

yea i thought 5 miles would be a breeze, least of my probs cause of x-country and i gotta say by the time you get to the run youre pretty beat up, even though the swim/bike distances are short it just makes it harder cause youre sprinting the entire time and i dunno i had a bit of a rivalry going with another girl in my age group...

make sure not to drink too much. i had a soccer tournament and i drank a shit load of water days before it to get ready and i ended up getting heat stroke. the doctor said i actually drunk too much water and ended up pissing out all of my electrolytes or somethin like that.

haha that's pretty funny actually, not the heat stroke part but the electrolyte part. i'll be sure to keep that in mind, although i've never had an issue with heat stroke.

brother lives in seattle, gonna be up there every break/long weekend to ski alpental or baker.

perfect life if i may say so myself. surfing everyday i can't ski

If it was heat stroke and you didn't get any medical attention, you'd almost certainly be dead. Heat exhaustion, maybe. But heat stroke is a much different, MUCH more dangerous animal.

i got heat stroke one time, my mom called 911 . i was so damn confused, i was sitting in the living room and then all these people came in in red jackets (fire truck outside my house) and were all over me. it was weird. but then once they left they told me i could eat ice cream for like 2 weeks and i was like "SWEET!!!!!". i think i was like 6
