Healthy Knees

So I've been venturing out of the park a bit more lately and skiing in the trees and deeper snow as we just got a huge dump in the east. One thing I've noticed is that my knees are under way more stress doing that type of skiing than when I'm in the park and they're almost always sore before, during and after skiing so i was wondering is there anything you can do without getting too serious to keep your knees in good shape? I haven't had any knee problems in the past so I'm assuming my knees are in decent shape as it is. I just want to keep them that way.

Back seat skiing, lazy skiing, not proper all mountain skiing....all leads to your ACL/MCL getting reconstructed in a few years..

seriously. my knee (reconstructed already) hurts way more after a day of park or mogul skiing versus a pow day

I used to get knee whip all the time.

Anytime the upper body is at a significantly different angle from your feet angle, there will be torsional stress, and that can result in pain at the knees.

My solution came in the form of a new technique and a new ski shape.

Now that's not really going to help you - but I personally wouldn't ski in any pain or fear

- it'll subtract from the stoke... but you do need to make a change...

Stretch daily. Best easy way to help prevent knee injuries. Just take 20 minutes to do it and it'll help tremendously.

Have a look at my skiing here... and this is on rock hard morning groomers. The ski shape has its limits on this snow at these speeds... you'll see the tail shuddering. But I can assure you, my knees felt absolutely fine. The only issues I have is that pulling fairly high g's all day... you need to have a fairly strong, straight back. But at least I can build that up with surrounding muscles (such as doing Yoga) .. knees aren't muscles. They really are basically a 1 directional hinge. That should be respected.

I'm scared a bit when I throw on my new skis after always hearing the ski injuries. That said I'm working on my technique non stop and trying to get good at proper skiing.

Nah.

But OP mentioned pow... I forgot to say, the ski technique on pow and groomers is basically the same.

And that means a lot in terms of building up muscle memory and training for pow when none around.

I'd probably redesign the ski if I were just skiing pow all day, (or groomers)... OP, just ask some other brand to help out if you want to see this design in stores anytime soon at an affordable price.

@OP

Man I feel your pain! This is my first year not solely focused on park and my knees are in so much pain! The pain is primarily located in my IT bands and around the jumpers knee area. I am also an eastern skier, perhaps there is a correlation.

yeah, none of you fuckers actually ever learned how to ski,you just learned to dance around on rails

I sprained my MCL earlier this season. The physical therapist told me to lay and my side against a wall and lift one leg straight up for 10 second 3 times on each side. This will help strengthen your butt muscles and make your legs overall stronger to prevent the chance of ACL tears.

bosu ball will help to strengthen the stabilizing muscles in your knees and ankles. I've found it has really helped not only my strength but my balance too.

Bosu balls are great. 2-3 sets of 10-15 reps

One legged squats on the bosu (add a weight if too easy)

Lunges onto the bosu with a weight, lift it over your head and slowly bring it back down.

Lunges onto the bosu with weight, twist to the opposite side of lunging leg.

Also, I do lots of yoga. Strengthens the legs and core and stretches it all out at the same time.

Remember to keep driving your hands forward and keeping pressure on the tongue of your boot.

Yup, you're not a fucking tool.

And I feel your pain. I went to the doctor for the pain and it was actually tendinitis in my patella, right below the knee. Now I ski with a Patella strap that stabilizes it, but it's not 100%. Avoid hard or flat landings. I stretch but my knees are still sore. Tis life.

I'm liking the GoPro on helmet and on the stick. Multiple angles? And what type of skis are those?

I saw a vid were a guy mentioned keeping your calves compact a amd close together. Making your thighs do all the work
