HD DVD is officially dead

sad, depressing and annoying. annoying because now i have to go buy a brand fucking new player, just to watch new movies.

im crushed.

i dont really know, but i do know that its like the new optical reading system. i guess its better when it really seems like the same thing.

i think i read somewhere that blueray plays discs with a greater amount of memory r a greater amount of stuff on it and the fact that it is in HD but other than that im not sure if there is much of a difference

a common dvd nowadays can hold like 8gigs on a side... i suppose if you have dual layered DVD's double sided you could get 16 gigs (theoretically).

bluray discs can hold up to 25 gigs i think, 50 if its double-sided.

I think beta 8 takes the cake, personally.

But for everyone asking about blu-ray.

blu-ray≈HD DVD

xbox 360 has hddvd capabilities, and ps3 has blu-ray.

okay, i apologize in advance for not knowing anything about this

but what is a blueray DVD? you are telling me, that my DVD player won't work anymore? and that my computer's DVD player won't work? can someone enlighten me because if so that is shit.

blue ray and hd dvd were just 2 competing companies making dvds in HD (sony and toshiba)

they both are pretty much the same thing in the fact that they can fit a rediculous amount of space on them and your movies can be in HD.

HD-DVD was in xbox 360s

Blue Ray is in PS3s

Blue Ray won the battle, but I wish HD-DVD did because of the name alone haha, its a lot less confusing. So all you with an HD dvd player will no longer be able to buy HD dvds to play in it, leaving you with what you have, and making the player worthless so tough luck

Yes you will need a blue ray player in order to play a blue ray dvd, however they will continue to release regular dvds for a long time, untill it gets cheap enough and common for everyone to have a blue ray player, and they start putting them in computers and such.

However i wouldnt worry about it, they still release VHS tapes of movies so it will be a while till you cant get any more regular dvds

and also if you dont have an HD tv with like 720p or 1080p or whatever it really wont matter cause it will look basically the same

sony, speilberg and sony dynamic digital sound were behind the DIVX revolution that failed in the late 1990's too. Remember those - you boght the divx disc for 4 dollars, put in the divx player (also played reg dvd) and after 24 hours, the divx disc wouldn't work anymore!

Sony is willing to waste so much money just for the smallest market share it is rediculous.

Umm check yo facts

Blu-ray has more capacity in GB and in video hour length

I wouldn't worry about buying anything in ten years we are just going to download everything and there will be no discs. Just hard drives.

umm, neither, good try though. Granted, the picture is similar enough to be debatable, but blu ray discs definitely holds more.

blu ray was obviously going to be the better choice because it can store way more than hddvd, people shouldnt of been so stupid.

The consumer isn't going to give a shit about storage size on the disk. The reason Blu-Ray won out was the same reason VHS did, they had the big companies on their side. Warner Brothers, the News Corp, and Disney all sided with Sony's format.

why do you think the companies backed blu ray? because they just felt like it? more storage at the same price of a hd dvd = better for the consumer

i do think that 100GB on a disk is pretty incredible, compared to a DVD that can hold 8-16GB (i think?). and i have no clue what can fill that. and in the long run, blu ray is ahead of its time, and it'll take a while to find something better, because we dont need anything better.

toshiba was the only brand to back HD DVD so it was just a matter of time. it wasn't really a suprise. oh well. i'm just glad the prices are coming down. i wanna get one for my plasma as soon as they're down to like $200 which should only be a few months

You have no idea why companies backed Blu-Ray. You're probably right that capacity plays a factor, but I'm sure that there were other considerations that were more political. Just look at how Microsoft Office got to be so "popular" and widely used.

I disagree with you that we've topped out and that "we dont need anything better" for a while. We already have the technology to replace disks entirely. My guess is that the future will be a large hard drive in your TV that you can download HD digital movies to your own home for a fee. Kinda like TiVo, but permanent and in better quality.

But if Sony had have marketed Betamax better, it would probably have been the preferred standard.

I'm surprised that Toshiba gave in to Sony by going with Bluray, it wasn't looking like Blu-Ray would get a majority for a long time, but there you go.

actually, it'll more likely split into 2 markets. digital downloads, and hard copy versions of movies. some people don't like the idea of not physically owning a movie so they'll buy it on blu ray. while other people will just download a movie off of itunes or something. plus there is the issue of how much the harddrive can store, and if it breaks or not. and if they make it internal harddrive, people cant bring movies that they bought to other peoples houses.

if you have a hd dvd player you just threw away your money

if you have a blue ray player you have the future of HD movies and you are set

uh, thanks for that. but how does this effect us with neither. will they stop producing normal DVD's and only in Blue Ray or what

dvds only hold 4.7 gigs per side with about 9 on a double layered dvd.
I believe blue rays are 17 per side for a total of 34 gigs.
That means they are HD ready and dvd's can be compressed less to produce better quality.

By the time that happens BluRay player and disc prices will have come down, so it won't be a big deal. But that won't happen for a while.

im glad that hd dvd and blue-ray didnt take off fast because i wouldve been annoyied if i had to get a new $500 hd/blue ray player...

hum physics disagrees with you sir. There is a set speed of light. Hence the phrase "the speed of light" however blue and red light waves do have different wave lengths.
