HD cameras?

video quality will be much better, but the camera you use should basically be influenced by what your final product will be. are you producing high end pieces for public critique? are you exporting the videos to DVD? are you producing for a large audience? will the video be 'premiered' on a large screen? then yes, HD will probably be worth it. are you editing videos of you and a few friends? are you going to playback the raw clips at the lodge for everyone to ooh and ahh at? are you going to piece together a few edits just for fun? then no, IMO, HD won't be worth it for you. honestly HD is a huge step that (correct me if i'm wrong in assuming) you probably won't need. your VX1000 will do just fine.
 
if you are going to upgrade to a vx2100, very similar camera yet much better with HD you're prolly gonna need a computer w/ 2 gigs memory among many other upgraded components costing you more money, for HD under 2 grand check out the 1/4 CCD HD cam that sony offers, the HDR-FX1 will run you $3,700 retail
 
Stick with your camera. Unless you want to produce some movies to distribute to all skiing community with the other big names.
 
my homie has a sony hd and it is super killer quaility. I would invest in that before anything. Super compact too for the quality it put out.
