video quality will be much better, but the camera you use should basically be influenced by what your final product will be. are you producing high end pieces for public critique? are you exporting the videos to DVD? are you producing for a large audience? will the video be 'premiered' on a large screen? then yes, HD will probably be worth it. are you editing videos of you and a few friends? are you going to playback the raw clips at the lodge for everyone to ooh and ahh at? are you going to piece together a few edits just for fun? then no, IMO, HD won't be worth it for you. honestly HD is a huge step that (correct me if i'm wrong in assuming) you probably won't need. your VX1000 will do just fine.
