Having trouble with quarterpipes

Exactly what the title says. Last season I had a lot of trouble getting above the lip of any quarter pipe I hit. It seems like every quarter pipe I hit regardless of speed my feet never seem to get that far above the deck. I know that quarter pipes are not the most common feature in the park but I like being able to hit all the features in the park relatively well. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem or used to, and if there are any good tips that helped you air out of quarterpipes.

I don't think I need more speed because I definitely go faster than I need to and it does not work.

play around with when you pop... you have to kind of hang on until the last minute before you jump, if that makes any sense.

if you just go really fast and don't pump or pop or anything, you will still get air. you may fall doing that though.

QPs are a lot more awkward to air out of than half pipes. i find the easiest way to do so is to hit it like a halfpipe where you are coming from an angle. if you do that make sure you don't accidentally speed check going up the wall. clean carves are key to pipe skiing. unlike skiing rails, your edges should ideally be sharp as fuck for pipe

pumping the transition is a big part too. pretty hard to teach pumping with words, so just practice it.

popping doesn't make you go higher, but the right amount of pop will stop you from decking out. Too much pop will obviously put you to the flat bottom.

in short, you need more speed than you think. even after skiing pipe for years, a lot of times i will drop in thinking i'm going too fast, and then not have enough speed.

mmmm im no expert with quarters but if the lips vert then you dont really want to pop, its kind of more like locking your knees. hard to explain.

Definitely is your speed. You can obviously learn to pump it better but you're probably going at it too slow. When you hit a huge 1/4 it feels like you're going at it at mach 10, by the time you get to the top, you might not be going as fast as you thought you were. Especially if it's something you aren't that comfortable riding.

Same with jumps in a sense. Sometimes people feel like they're going way to fast at a jump, then they speed check only to last half way to the knuckle.

Ir's tough though. 1/4s and halfpipes are dying out. Also unless places have a cutter, maintaining a 1/4 is a nightmare. Pipes are expensive as fuck, and now they're all dead.

If any hills near you have a pipe, just go in it from time to time. Generally you'll notice each day as you get more comfortable you'll start charging with more speed and going bigger out of the walls.

Just keep shredding them

you're right... 'pop' wasn't quite the right way to put it, but I still stand by my advice that you have to play around with how long to hang on for before 'locking your knees.'

next time you are at a park with a qp, play with it for the day. get the feel of the qp. when you get to the top of the qp pop a tiny bit and keep tucked a little bit. DO NOT give a large pop as you will miss the transition and send it straight to flat on your side. i know you say speed is not the issue but speed is a key factor. try going a little bit faster every time like a few side steps up every time. by no time you will be sending qps

List Of Training Exercises For OP

1. Find 1/4 pipe

4. Drop in and boost into the stratosphere

And for an alternative option, this song just popped into my head.

^ Turned out to be a good song for getting motivation. Grabbed one of my old mp3 players to shred with a couple years ago and that was on there. It builds up and before you drop you're like "Yo Em, I don't wanna be a quitter, I'll do it, I'll do it" And he's all like "Sure bro, I bet you won't" And you're like "Nah Em I'm gonna do it" Then him and Shia Labeouf come blasting in with a "FUCKING DO IT THEN BRO!!!!!!!!!!" And then you drop as slay everything in the park.
