Have we gotten dumb?

I am 19, and I have recently started to get into the whole newschool movement, and I love it. I am on my way out of racing, and it is such an exciting direction for the sport. But a disturbing trend that I am seeing, is letting the image become more important than what you throw down.

I have skied all of my life, and I never really liked skiing with a backpack on. It affected my balance, and if I fell, I didn't want to worry about getting impaled by a screwdriver, or breaking sunglasses or a camera, or even squishing my food. It made sense to me that whenever I had the chance, I would ditch the pack.

Why is it then, that all of a sudden wearing a backpack is a measure of on slope style. I understand that a backpack filled with avalance gear is more important than your skiis if you are going under the ropes, but in many years of skiing I have yet to see an avalance on a groomed run.

HEY IDIOTS---Just because Seth wears a backpack when he rips a psycho mountain line in some remote Alaskan mountain range 1000km from an outhouse, doesn't mean you have to wear one when you slide down the blue runs at your local mountain.

DAKINE must be laughing their ass off right now. They make these extremely well built packs, designed for the backcountry skier who needs spots for avalance gear, etc, and every kid in the city wants one to put their extra set of mittens in to ski at the local dope slope.

Why is stupid trendy???????

sarcasmwow thanks for being the first to mention this/sarcasm

yeah haven't heard about backpacks being cool. i to don't like riding with one. I'll bring one up with like a dry pair of socks, food, shoes etc.. but i nearly always leave it in the lodge. If there is no food i'll just bring acouple of granola bars, $ to buy food and walk around in ski boots till i get to my car

good point, there are so many dumb kids at my mountain that ski around with a pack and all they do is ski the groomed, little posers.

yah, i don't know where this new trend developed. packs suck. nuf said. if you're hitting the park all day yah i could see why you would want one to stick food, extra gear, and filming stuff in. but i don't understand why/how kids hit kickers with them on. if you bring a pack, just drop it somewhere in the park and keep an eye on it or lock it to a tree.

ya. I haven't seen any - except for maybe 1 skier do it around here. there are a couple of little borders that do and it's funny watching them struggle to get on the chairlift.

oh gosh...there is definitely two sides to this. yes, i wear a backpack, but its to hold my crap in. and yes, other kids do it to try to look cool, but hey, why do people snowboard...they think its for the same reason ;)

yea your an idiot first of all since when is wearing a backpack cool, and in the backcountry its always alright but maybe those kids skiing around groomers with backpacks on have like a camera in there i always do that

well when I ski at my little mountain I never wear a pack, but when I go to resorts like tremblant, and st anne I always have my bag I carry everything in there from my tools, to cameras and food. quit ragging on people without a good reason, who wears a bag to look cool anyways??

ive seen several war packs on groomed, weird, but i have never thought of a pack as some sort of statement thingy, i wear mine in bc only when i am skiing, but yea, some do wear a pack when there is no practical purpose for it, which is wierd and i already said that

as a mostly full time camera bitch I appreciate the days when I don't bring my pack up on the hill. It's just a reminder that for that day I can go have fun and I don't have to worry about breaking the thousands of dollars worth of equipment strapped to my back. Like this passed friday at tremblant, super fun, however I did blow the edge out on my skis. boo.

'...if it weren't for harvey we would all be in the freeze forum.'

Yes, I myself am also a resident camera bitch. I rarely bring a backpack though. Only when totting lots of gear (very rare). I simply ski with my camera in hand usually in a plastic bag or something. Sure it sounds ghetto but its a hell of a lot better than skiing with a backpack. Its real easy to do follows as well, nothing to worry about.

Yes we have. Is there even a need to ask weather we've gotten dumber?

if im skiing at a bigger area such as jackson hole or vail where we'll be going out of bounds and might need extra gear such as first aid materials, water, or dry clothes, then yes i wear a pack. but i dont wear one at my local hill. come on, seriously- who gives a fuck if someone wears a pack? if they want to do it then let them do it, they may have something in there that they'll need later on in the day, or maybe they feel more comfortable skiing with extra gear. as long as everyone's having fun....
