have we become too materialistic?

what are the qualities a person is judged on these days? it seems to me like its money, clothing, cars, jewelry, humor, houses, the food you eat and all kinds of other superficial things. what ever happenned to honesty, loyalty, patience, hard work, justice, skill, workmanship, etc.? it seems like the world as a whole has forgotten these things and are way too wrapped up in materialistic ideals. I think we as skiers should start respecting other skiers for who they are, and not for how they look out on the slopes. It can start with us, the skiing community, cuz right now we dont seem like much of one. peace.

ya we have become more materialistic, especially women, they won't go out with you unless you have a wicked nice little sports car and lots of bling, but we have to everyone driving there suvs and what not in the middle of downtown cause it's cool, that's why gas is so expensive causee of all the fuckers driving there suv, they think as soon as they have kids, oh shit better get an suv cause those roads, oh man whatch out, but ya skiers need to be more respectful to each otehr

Seize the carp

actually to add on to my thought above, i think humanity in general needs to be more respectful and kind to each other, i mean look at when you're driving, do cars let you in when trying to merge? usually no, people are assholes on the road, but in general we all need to change

Seize the carp

theres no question that americans as a whole are frighteningly materialistic, and i hate it, judge on character not on the car they drive or the clothes they wear. its good to own nice shit, like oakley or good skis, but it shouldnt be what consumes your life. your passion should be, be it skiing or family or what have you

Reviewing myself i find myself hypocritical. In my heart, i want just plain happiness, in my head, the only way i can think of that, is through security. Fuck this, if i could just give away everything i have, just to put an everlasting smile on my face i would. But how do we associate our love? We think of physical things, and that is being materialistic. What the fuck?

And another thing that totally pisses me off, is that i heard that the wife of former reggae artist bob marley is starting up a company of things dedicated to him. Can u piss more on this mans grave? He was totally against corporations, and how do we honour him? By creating something that he was totally against, and branding his name on it.

it's the media, you see these people in magazines and tv and movies that have all these things, and everything works out just the way it should, and then our mind starts to use that as a norm, when in reality it couldent be farther from the real world

wow, this is really cool how you suprisingly havent got a bunch of smart ass comments from the 13 year olds, but on the topic, i agree entirely. the world thast we live in now days is totally down the shitter. i think that the ski community is a good place to start

Even in the ski community...people will always judge others on their gear- (skis, pants, jacket, boots, gloves, poles...and so on). And yeah, I'm definately hypocritical on this topic too. I want to believe that I don't judge people based on looks and money, but I do. I think, to a certain extent, materialism will always exist as long as humans exist. We can definately try to make things better, and maybe things will eventually be somewhat better.

here comes the smart-ass comments from a 13 year old: snonasty is pretty much right, but i think the reasons everyone cares so much about material things is because a)they want to be just like someone or b)they want to be different. now, in todays world, being different is incredibly hard, but in being different and the same, just thinking like someone or unlike someone isnt enough. you have to look like them too. another thing about material stuff is its basically how you express yourself. if you want people to know something about you, your going to use something thats considered material.wow. before i wrote this i was against all thing material (i didnt really care) but you have to realize that its an important part of our culture.

good point skipunk, i wouldnt say that was a smart remark, it was acutually a solid argument. and i think its ok to judge people by looks upon first seeing them, but you really need to go and talk with people before making any major assumptions about them like so many of us do. if your gonna judge somebody by their looks at least keep it to yourself until you really know the person.

oh jeeeeeeeeeez dont get me started! but im actually totally psyched to see this discussion on here! here i was thinking that this website was a bunch of 15-year-old jerkoffs who think they are all badass and just wanna look cool (i read the forums on this site, so take that with a grain of salt).

but ill be the first to admit that i am materialistic in the sense that i LOVE to have STUFF. i have 3 mountain bikes--all of which are pretty much the best of the best. i have 2 pair of top end skis (and want some more), 4 sets of poles, top end boots, tools out the ying yang, tons of camera equipment, hiking/clibing gear.... etc. im a total gear headed materialistic person.

yet i drive the lowest end nissan pickup available (gets 28 mpg!). i am a reserved, respecting, unassuming person who is interested and involved in the environment. i get pissed at people who think they are better than other people for one reason or another, and i hate the whole 'image' thing (apparently its not cool to wear cords in the summer? you cant wear white in the winter?).

my biggest pet peeve is people who admire pro athletes or entertainment big shots to the point where its the biggest event in their life if they meet jp auclair, michael jordan, or eminem, or whoever. how self-disrespecting is that?!? i feel like you gotta be your own person--you can admire people for what they do and because they may be good at it, but have some self-respect and feel like youre just as good as they are in some other way.

oh yeah, and like papa was saying, lots of girls (and im sure guys, but i dont pay attention to them) are into guys who look cool and obviously have money (do you think ive gotten ANY chicks cuz i drive a 93 shitbox pickup? hell no). screw that. those girls are worthless anyway.

if you can afford all that equipment im sure you can afford a riced out civic to get all the sluts.

hahahahahaha jk

nope, aint got no loot left. spent it all on bikes and ski equip. and i still dont have enough. wanna lend me your slu--er, i mean, car?

Well I can't talk shit much in this department. I wouldnt date an ugly girl. The whole point of dating someone it seems it to fuck and to have as a trophy, relationships are just a by-product. Why am I going to college? To be rich someday. I want a very expensive sports-car (6 figure range) If I was 'true to life' blha blah I would live at a ski resort and be a poor loser all my life. But I love spending money. I love buying things, new toy's, good food, exc. Its fun to buy shit for your friends too. Its fun to take nice vacations. Yes I'm materailistic but thats doesn't mean im shallow I have a large spectrum of needs to satsify not all are material. I picture myself in 20 years living in a shitty mobile home with a Ferrari parked outside. why? because I love cars, and if you love cars how can you not love a Ferrari? I can deal with less than average living space but my car has to handle and accelerate like money.

The Olson twins are Michelle you sick little baby fuckers.

'we live in a capitalist society. there is nothign that can change this. why not take advantage of it.'

hey i'm not saying i dont enjoy stuff, i work a job 30 hours a week for stuff, you just have to take to heart the old fight club quote about the stuff you own end up owning you

------------------------------------------------------------------------------'I am now a moderator... and all I had to do was suck harveys cock' -Ductapeboy

I think that buying things that will give you a performance improvement is really not that materialistic. Natedog says he bought all those skis and bikes but probably because they improve his skiing or biking ability or because they are different and better for different conditions. That is for you're own pleasure. I think materialism is more liking things and buying things that will make you look better or cooler to other people. Such as clothes, designer furniture, and other things that only improves on look's, not on comfort or performance or that has not emotional connection. Also, liking a girls/guy only because of her looks and nothing else. Another thing is the possessions you own in you're house/room. If you buy artwork that is for yourself and makes you feel more comfortable at home in you're house them it is not really materialistic because you have an emotional connections with your surroundings. But if you only buy the newest trends or artwork that will impress others, that is MORE materialistic. Everybody's materialistic to a certain extent I'm just against buying things ONLY for the coolness factor.

But i guess if you buy certain things than people WILL judge you by how you look and certain members of the opposite sex will be more attracted to you. This makes up your style. For instance, the shallow dumb ass that has a decked out civic and is wearing lot's of 'bling' or 'ice' will get all the stupid sluts sluts. I guess dressing a certain way will attract the kind of people they like. An if they like the dumb ass slut's that's fine with me. They can have them.

your answer is yes, we're much to materialistic. but no, nothings going to change.
