Have skiers pushed it to far this season?

This is more of a personal opinion that i have and just wondering if anyone agrees with me. it seems from my point of view that an incredible number of skier this season have had major injuries. Including a number of pros and countless skier this season it seems like there are far to many injuries this season. the jumps and hits have grown in size at an incredible rate. i remeber when 40 foot tables were absolutly huge and now we have pros taking hits at 120+ feet. but are people taking those extra saftey procasions? i know next year i will be skiing with some wrist gards and thumb protectors. this season i have been suffering with bad skier thumb and this weekend i finally pushed it and broke my thumb. A lot of skaters wear wrist gaurds and skier go 20 feet higher then them and dont take that saftey procausion. so why not?

Because we have POLES...But I'm definitely getting a new mouthguard, and maybe something for my right knee, which is now probably permanantly damaged from twisting. But really, I never thought 40 footers were THAT huge...

I've seen the trend as well. Even in myself I've had more injuries this year. I has prompted me to wear more armour, I don't know about other area's but it's pretty uncommon to see someone without at the very least a helmet.

it has nothing to do with pole straps. i have no pole straps right now, and it seems every time i fall, its always the same thumb i hurt

Well...you could try learning how to fall CORRECTLY! Don't put your arm out when you fall, thats retarded. Any snowboarder, skier, skateboarder etc... will tell you that you tuck arms in and absorb, DO NOT PUT ARMS OUT WHEN YOU FALL.

havent you ever heard of progression? to move on to bigger and better things, you gotta try, to try, you may get hurt. there is no such thing as pushing too much

A lot of you guys are just like 'shit happens', and 'its called progression', but you've gotta find a line between sanity and progression. If you just go all out on any day of the week, you could easily find yourself ending your season, and maybe even your career. i'm all for progression, but you gotta progress under the right circumstances.

i slept with your mom last night

progression is not just going out and trying something for the first time! you see these pros tryin insane shit and bailing huge but you don't see the endless hours on the trampoline and water ramps these guys/girls spend before givin'er on snow!

you just hafta learn how to fall. like the guy above said, tuck in your arms, go completley loose and the possiblities of injury are super slim. you more or less just bounce and ride away. easy as that. maybe a bruised hip or something

i have noticed more people going bigger and getting injured and that just comes with progression. and getting hurt is a risk you take whenever you decide to go big. so just suck it up

well,in fact somebody did die...in WA.Going too big

-----------------------------------------------------------What would happen if the powder was warm?if u actually needed summer in order for snow to fall?Chest deep hot pow?And in Winter, sand would come down the skies, and we would be pissed off, because our cars wouldn't work...

first off to address some of your comments.

1. yes tons of people have died, thats a stupid comments. look at all the related deaths from avalanches. i have talked to people who said kids have paralized themselves from neck injuries (wasn't there a sueing at whistler related to this?)

2. dont say that someone is a pussy, i will take the biggest hits i can find but anyone that skis will fall sometime in there life and what i am saying is we need to take more saftey procausions to avioid this

3. as said before, pros constantly fail to tell kids that they spend countless hours on water ramps and tramps before trying a new trick out on the snow and this is where our sport has failed. kids will see a pro on tv pull a trick that they have practiced in water first and that kid will go out and try it on there first attempt and injure themselves.

4. all pros have training programs in the summer. they weight lift, run, mountain bike or whatever to keep there muscles strong so they are less likely to be injured. and all we do is excersise our fingers all day by starring at the computer.

5. and the last point is when you say just tuck your arms up, its easier said then done. it is a natural reation to put your arms out to catch your fall. you would have to accually think about not putting your arms out (which when i am working on a trick i do not think about if i fall i worry about pulling the move off). and also even free skiing or racing you will put your arms out (which the doctor found out that i accually broek my thumb in 2 places and one was from back in december from racing). so im just saying that as skiers who are progessing our sport higher and farther then any other sport on 2 feet, we need to train to prevent the injuries and wear the proper saftey equitment (mouth peice, helmet, wrist, thumb gaurds and proper bindings)

its not a matter of being a pussy, its about being safe and pushing our sport farther in the right direction

skiing isn't a sport for the weak man... course it's going to continue to get pushed skiing rules! boarding is pushing it so we got to push the sport twice as far!!!!

you should know ur own limits

and take the proper progression

learn your tricks on say a tramp or sumthin...then move it into a powder booter...then mayb onto a smaller table on a warm day

take your time and chances are u wont get hurt

all u really need is a helmet...but thumb guards seem like a good idea...

Jmwski57 is a little bit deluded about the 'training' regimen of most pros. Unless you mean smoking chronic and playing video games.

Get some sour cream and onion chips with some dip, man, some beef jerky, some peanut butter. Get some Haagen-Das ice cream bars, a whole lot, make sure chocolate, gotta have chocolate, man. Some popcorn, red popcorn, graham crackers, graham crackers with marshmallows, the little marshmallows and little chocolate bars and we can make smores, man. Also, celery, grape jelly, Captain Crunch with the little Crunch berries, pizzas. We need two big pizzas, man, everything on 'em, with water, whole lotta water, and Funyons

^^ Shut up. That's exactly what I'm unintentionally doing. Hopefully next year I'll come back with a vegeance or live in a place where it snows or become unbusy. I miss skiing.

Progression leads to injury, it's the same in all sports like skiing. Doesn't matter if you're progressing from 180s to 3s or from rodeo7s on 60ft tables to huge flatspins on 100ft gaps. Whatever level you're progressing at you will one day push too far and may well get injured. That's a risk I'll take, and a risk the pros take, that's why they are pros.

2 years i sprained both my thumbs going down the skier x at mt snow but the past 2 years i havent hurt my self to bad beside brusis from rails but the pain doesent stay

ok, well last year i was alright...i could spin and rails, this fall i broke my collarbone doing flips off my tire swing. but this winter i have progressed alot, in the begining of the winter i was doing really sweetass tricks but it wasnt really stylely. since vail, i have had the best style that i could possible give. its a nice dave crighton style, not too guirila and not penis spins. i have to say that this year is one of my best by far hands down period.

well me and my chick were gettin busy at her place when her parents were gone, we were in the basement so she says to go upstairs and get a condom and im naked and i obviously ran to go get it, it was dark as hell too so on my way back downstairs i missed the last 2 steps and fell flat on the ground with an boner, i was so lucky - Lateralis

progression cant be stopped by safety, 120+ foot tables are sick. i have a worse skiers thumb than u. i tore the legament off my bone along with a chunk of bone. i now have to wear a cast all season. but im not stopping to take any safety precautions.

Anyone notice that they went bigger al last years X-Games? Well lets look why. Candide Thovex is out with a knee injury that will have him sidelined indefinitly. CR was there but hesitant to go as big becuase he's been injured too many times. Phil Larose was nearly out for good on live television becasue he went far too large out of the pipe. The pace of equipment has developed far too fast and is greatly dangering skiers. Safety gear is all but non-existant for most skiiers. Ask any moto-cross raccer to hit his kicker without knee braces and he'd jsut laugh. And these are pretty insane guys. I just want ot point out that companies need to develop safetly gear with the same pace as their skis. Salomon is putting race bases on a few pro models to get extra speed, but hasn't changed the design of their top helmets in five years.
