has the system gotten to you?

alright - so this thread started earlier today when I was sitting upstairs reading a book about science and shit... and I finally figured out what I want to go to school for and do with my life. But - even though I know what I want to do - I'm still not going to go back to school for at least another 4 years. I graduated from high school last year and spent this winter as a ski bum at Blue Mountain, Ontario (got over 100 days of skiing in, hell yea).

now, here is where the actual thread starts - why do so many people think it is neccesary to go to college or university imediately after highschool? I know a lot of people (my dad and stepmom included) who look down upon people who don't go right to post-secondary. But I just gotta ask why? Has the system really gotten to you so much that you are brainwashed to think that taking time off from school is bad?

I mean - seriously... after highschool you are free for the first time in your life. You are young and have no actual responsibiltiy in life. Why don't you spend a few years and actually live your life before going out and getting a carear? you have no wife, no kids, no debts to pay off... you are as free as you will ever get in life. after taking one or two or six years off from school (the way I see it - and the way the majority of colleges and universities out there see it - if you go to post-secondary for first year by the time you are 24 than you are in the same position as you would be at 18) than go to school and get a good education - because after that you gotta start having some responsibility. So go out and travel, do things that you said you were going to do when you were younger, go and have fun.

And i'm not talking take a few years off and join the workforce and get a 5 day a week full time job at a factory or something. that's not living - you might as well go to school if you're gonna waste time doing that (unless of course you arn't even gonna go back to school - who says you must attend post-secondary? I know tons of people who now live succesful lives and never went to college or university).

So I gotta ask - those of you who went right into post-secondary out of highschool - why did you do it? was it because you felt obligated? did your parents pressure you? did the system brainwash you? or do you have your own reason - if so than lets hear it.

Well i haven't graduated yet, but i have no intention of going to college, im takin a year off no matter what my parents say. im planin on movin to mammoth and bummin it round there.

STONERS CAN WIN! It's been proven before and shall be proven again.

thats a good idea..... i never thought of that...i just thought junior/senior year, start applying to colleges and then go..... think of that.... several years of having absolutely nothing to worry about.... my cousin did that, he went to alaska, just kinda went there... he wanted to get a job, and and then fly to a new place, and get a job, and then fly to new place and start over... i never thought about taking time off... im gonna remember that...

You COULD take a year off, or....

Apply to SFU, move to whistler, schedule all your courses so that they are on 2 days(easy to do at sfu) and drive down for those 2 days. Live in whistler the rest of the time, and ride as much as possible.

jib this - that's a good idea, but why the fuck not do that after taking a few years off? a few years isn't gonna make a difference as to how you do in school. and school drains a lot of time and money - and whistler drains even more... good luck with that plan of yours. (you probably have rich parents don't you?)

go to college. it's really fucking fun. you want freedom? go to college. you will never have as much free time ever in your life. live in a dorm with hundreds of girls your own age. go out every night if you want to. register for afternoon classes and sleep in every day. get 5 consecutive weeks off in the winter to do nothing but ski. ski extremely cheap because you get a college season pass. live in a dorm with hundreds of girls your own age (did i say that yet?) summers off. parties. spring break. go to college.

i didn't come here with pants, and i'm not leaving with pants

^good idea as well.... i like the part about the girls... and the skiing... and the cheap skiing, i like that.... i swear im gonna be really poor when i grow up

well, going to college first will make it easier afterwards, but a year off inbetween probibly wont hurt much.

ok - yea college is fun... but you seam to be forgetting that you will get there eventually. why go right to college when you could be missing some of the best days of your life? do you really think sleeping in everyday and getting drunk is all there is in life?

and rsd or whatever - that last thread was towards jib-this not you (hense the jib this at the start of the thread).

remember, i'm pro - post-secondary... i'm just saying why go right away when you can take some time off and explore (not only explore the world and get new experiences, but you'll be exploring yourself and what actually matters in your life). waking up and not knowing what's going to happen over the next few hours/days/weeks/months.

if you wait to long then you will be hella older then everyine you meet also you are missing the fact that many people drink for a lifetimne of partying in college when they are there.

i'm definitly not saying sleeping in and drinking is all there is in life. in fact i rarely drink at all. i'm just saying that you can basically do whatever you want. i'm not saying not to take a year off either. take some time off and find yourself if thats what you want to do, i'm just saying that college offers a lot of time and opportunity to find yourself, and a lot of other people who are doing the same thing. oh yeah, and a shit load of time to travel. in 3 years at college so far i've been to england, iceland, wyoming, montana, BC, washington, quebec a bunch of times, AZ, san fransico, and yosemite, and all for super cheap, cause being a student gives you freedom for last minute travel deals an shit.

Wow...I'm getting ripped on by some fucker in Ontario...

So I have rich parents? Nice try asshole, keep telling yourself that in order to feel better about whatever situation you're in. I hope you had fun ski bumming at Blue Mountain, I've experienced it first hand and know how much it sucks. What's that, you can't understand how someone in BC might have ever skied in Collingwood? Look at my profile you cum swallowing bitch, I used to live in the shithole known as Ontario.

Contrary to what you might believe, I don't have rich parents that pay my way through school(though they are, thankfully, in a position to help me with it.). I spend my summers in Ontario working 2 jobs so I can afford to live in Burnaby, go to SFU, and ski as much as possible. I eat as little as possible to make sure I can ski, and things like drinking are no longer options for me, because I'd have to choose between those and skiing. I've worked harder than you could possibly imagine to make my situation today a reality.

As for doing the Whistler thing, it's actually quite possible when your plan involves 2-3 other people who are willing to do it with you, and sharing the cost of gas with those people. Not to mention that one of them owns a van(needed for summer work) that can ferry us from Whis to Van and back again. As for rent in Whistler, yes, I know it's expensive. However, working a night job makes it somewhat more affordable, and I'm certainly not expecting to live in luxury. Ski pass? Thanks to the fact that I'm a student at an approved Lower Mainland post-secondary institution, I get one for $350 plus tax, instead of having to work it off in Whistler or paying ridiculous amounts of money for it.

There it is. So next time you want to open your mouth and start talking shit, don't bother.

'I've had some good sex, but it's not very reliable. You can't phone up the sex report, ya know? You can phone up the snow report'...Crucial Mike

Sorry man, but where did he talk shit? And I definitly agree that talking a year off is a good thing to do. It's one of your only chances. You should take it. Im not at that stage in life yet so I have a few years to not worry about it but When I do get there, unless I get like scholarship or something taht needs to be taken right then and there I believe I will take some time off.

whoa jib this.. flying off the deep end a little. haha, anyways, after high skool i went right into university, partly because my dad would have flipped if i didn't, and partly because i felt it was the right thing to do. BUT, my first year in uni was a complete waste.. i hated all my classes, and could only think about how badly i wanted to be out west riding. so, after i flunked out of first year, i took the next year off and lived in interior BC at big white for the year. that was the best choice i've ever made. a year of riding, playing video games, smoking bongs for breakfast, wondering where my next meal would come from...all of this taught me more than any post secondary institution could ever hope to.

now, i'm back in university, and i'm loving it. i changed majors.. i'm now in geography rather than law. i'm actually doing well in school. so, to all those that are thinking about taking a year off, but are being influenced to go to school, here's my advice: do what YOU want to do - otherwise your heart won't be fully into whatever you end up doing.

I am seriously considering moving out west for a year or two, and having the time of my life. I can get into all the schools I want to go to, so getting into school isn't really an issue. Then I will have time to go to college and have the best timr of my life a second time. Some people stress too much on going to a first rate school. There will be plenty of oppurtunties in your life, so just take the one that fits you best at the time.

I choose to go to school right after to get it over with. I just wanna take my classes and be out, and not have to worry about having to go to college afterwords... why prolong it? Why not just go and do it, have a degree under your belt, and go out into the world, you'll be just as free, just with 4 more years of experiance and knowledge under your belt.

Sorry everyone, but whoever the hell went ahead and talked shit about me having rich parents deserved to get verbally beat down. A gap year isn't a bad idea, and my first year at university was a waste, but I was able to transfer out after it, so I did have some positive aspects to it. And school is fun.

im yet to graduate but i told my dad im for sure not going to post-secondary right away, and he doesn't think it's a bad idea.. so it's all good.. i don't see why your parents would try and stop you though.. it's your life

The system got to me! I went to college right after school mostly because I felt pressured too. At the time, taking a year off wasn't an option. I totally regret it. I wish I had taken a year off to travel. See Europe, Panama and down under. I will be graduating from college soon, in a major that I actually like, but now I'm stressing about getting my loans paid off. I don't think I'll ever get to do some of the things I could have done had I taken a couple years off.

It's a damn good idea. I suppose you could also take a bit of time off after university or college, but chances are if you are paying your own way, you will be deep in debt even if you have some scholarships. If you want to pay everything off before interest builds up, you are going to need to work, and also save. This basically stops you from taking time off to do what you please. When you have things paid off, you are going to most likely be attached to some sort of job or starting career.

It definatly seems as though its easier to take time off after Highschool but its also doable after college.

jib-this... got a bit of agression in you eh? ,my bad for assuming you got rich parents, but that's no reason to go bad mouthing Blue Mountain. for east coast it's pretty chill dude... kick ass park, lots of people so we got a dope scene, cool parties, and hella-cheap living. (still don't know what me being in Ontario has to do with it? why do so many west coast types think they are better than the east coasters? whatever, one day you'll get the pickle out of your ass and realize that we're all in it for the same reason)... anyways - back to what you were saying... I now understand your situation... now (without going flip mode on me again) can I ask you why you work so hard to do what you're doing when the simple silution would be to either go to school or ski. Why both at the same time? Just curious as to your modivation to work your ass off year round and still live ghetto poor (not being able to drink is a damn big sacrifice - not one I'd be willing to take myself). And curious - how old are you? have you already taken a few years off and now going to school? if so than you sir are one of the most pationate skiers I have met (well, met figurativly - this is only the net).

(and as a parson comming from a poor family, I understand why you got offended... but i still see no reason to bring the fact that I ski Blue into it - were you trying to insult me? I chose to ski here, there's nothing keeping me here...)

that is a very good idea that most people wouldn't think of since the system pushes you to just go straight into something. After high school you could take some years off, do whatever, because you have nothing to worry about. You will never a time like that ever again. BUT there is one problem. If all your friends go to university, and you aren't making a lot of money if any, then what the hell are you gonna do for those years off?

Faliure will not be accepted.

Ever see Good Will Hunting? Watch that, then consider Fight Club. Look for a Spanish movie called Bella Epoque too. Yeah, only once you've lost everything are you free to do anything.

I think I got suckerd into going to college right away after high school because of 'the system' as you put it. After a year and a half I realized I hated my major, and generally hated my life. I took a semester off and bummed around. I figured out some of what I want to do with my life and now have a new major and I'm happy. It was really hard to go back. That's why parents worry. They know the longer you put it off, the harder it will be to start again.

I think you should go when you're ready, and if that's never, that's cool. I know there are some older (upper 20's) people in my classes. They seem like they have a harder time finding groups to work in and homework buddies, (I'm in engineering, so both are necessary) but there are others who seem to fit in just fine. I think an advantage to going to college when you're older is that you're absolutely sure you want to be there, and you are always there because you want to be. It is a ton easier to focus in class and get through homework if you're motivated.

ill work at a ski shop or somthin, and ill live up in the mountains and not pay bills, or ill live in my parents basement, and dont make fun of me bitch, when our basements finished its gonna have a theatre and a kitchen and a bedroom and a bathroom, so im set down there, except when i need to bring girls home, when that happens ill go to their place or well do it in her car or my truck, and ill get the girls, let me tell u, girls cant resist a guy who has little future and lives in his parents basement, ull see, ull all see
