Has anyone tried dyeing their outerwear ?

I'm tryna repurpose my kit for this season, has anyone dyed their stuff before? I'm just not sure how it'll work considering waterproofing. If any of you have tips/advice I'd appreciate it!

It’s an interesting idea but with the waterproofing I just don’t see how it could soak into the material and change the color

That and if it does manage to soak in (say you use RIT dye), I'd imagine it would fuck up the waterproofing membrane unless you reapplied some spray on DWR shit.

Confirming that this won't work on a waterproof material because it's....waterproof. Although, there are certain spray paints made for fabric that you can buy that should work. Make a few stencils and go to town.

Note: If you use regular spray paint you'll end up with some crusty crusty gear. I've done it and I ended up throwing the jacket away.

Yeah I figured, just wanted to see what others thought. And yeah straight up paint on fabric just stiffens up, would need some sort of fabric medium. Thanks I’ll look into the fabric spray paint!

I've tried it on a gore-tex jacket that was originally black but has slightly faded to green. I originally used normal rit-dye and it wouldn't soak into the jacket due to the waterproofing as I was suspecting. I then tried Rit DyeMore which is for more polyester and blends but also no luck. It'll seem promising when doing it but it'll never hold. I've resorted to sharpie and it's much better plus since I like to sketch anyways made a design on the jacket. The sharpie is very tedious but worth it.
