Has anyone happened to notice...?

This may be just something that has caught my attention, but for about the last 5-6 years i've seen/purchased many snowboarding movies, particurally Mack Dawg. I've seen a few ski ones, too, but we all know that the shred flicks are a bit better.

I've noticed around a few months to even a year after their release, songs that were virtually unknown and then displayed in the movies will, very often, show up in commercials, TV shows, etc...I can think of about 10-20 instances where this has happened, but i won't waste my time since most of us are just skiiers and haven't seen the movies. Just trust me, it's almost weird how much of a sure thing it's become....a few fellow NS'ers can attest to this.

Many of you have probably seen the "Picture This" trailer from MDP; that song was used in a commercial shortly after....i know this happened with Huddle Formation by the Go! Team in Teddy Bear Crisis with some car commercial, even though that song is a bit more popular.......

I apoligize for the long post....my question is do you think this is some sort of coencedence of artists' hitting their peak and getting popular, or does the ski/snowboard industry help bring out much of the good, unknown music into the mainstream world? Or something else? I'm just not sure how it works, and I'm interested to see if anyone else has noticed this trend.

i believe it is because some of the production company's also make commercials. i recall ghost writer by rjd2 has been used in many commercials and i am pretty sure msp also makes commercials.

one of the best segments ever, pep's in the hit list. the song is ghostwriter by RJD2, and its been used in car insurance commercials i think? god damnit thats such a sweet band and now its gonna become so known

Commercial production companys don't even care about action sports movies. It's purley coiencidence.

snowboarding videos kill skiing videos, its a way of life. most people are either in denial, or have already accepted this point about 50 threads ago.

totally not related. they put catchy/popular songs in commercials, they put catchy/popular songs in ski/snowboard movies. in fact, the ski industry is always late with the trends. MIA was cool like 2 years ago, but it's just becoming cool now in skiing. same thing happened with clap your hands say yeah, mgmt, and various other music.

Agreed. Ski/Board movies are usually behind on trends as far as music goes. The reason why you see ski/board movie music come out around the same time as commercials is probably because both entities start to recognize or hear about the music after it has gained some critical mass from urban dwellers and trend setters.

It's funny because I use to think this way too a long time ago when i lived in a really rural area close by Mt. Hood. But once you move into a big metropolitan area with a good music you start to realize that it really is true when people say that almost all trends start in big cities and then slowly filter out to the other areas.

it was in brian wenning and tim o'connor's part in mosaic first.

get learned son.

MGMT - Time to Pretend was the opening song in the movie 21 but Im sure production started before they got big in skiing

i love watching edits of Jon Olsson's because he always has some very alternative music to his skiing. and he doesn't put on gangster rap and make a fool out of him self like other skiers do

thanks, lotsa good answers

even though i was kicked off my high horse thinking that us winter people just had the best, and first taste in music........flappin tits

i was just watching this comercial and it had the same song that is in the car ralling part of yeah dude (with craig coker) i forget what comercial it was

these big companys have board meetings... at these board meetings they explore what is hot in "youth culture". Im sure they are smart enough to look around in youth orientated activities such as action sports films to see what kind of music the youth is into.

you should realize that good music isn't funneled directly from new bands to ski/shred movies producers. its everywhere. people get paid to find good music for ski/shred movies the same way they get paid to find catchy music for ads, movies and tv shows. it just good music being noticed.
