Has anyone ever heard of DEMO-ING skis?

It seems like half of the threads i come across in gear talk are "what skis should i get", "i need you help!", "opinions, which ski!?!?!" i think that people need to have more patience and wait till the snow falls, then head to their local mountain and demo the skis that they are interested in.

Am i crazy or do other ppl feel the same way?

Most "shops" won't let you demo skis at all, unless its actually at a mountain. People have to go to the mountain and find a demo shack or whatever, like at Stratton, and its kind of a hassle, especially to try out all the many options that people have...almost like a waste of a ski day. The idea about asking NS is to get opinions about the skis, see what people thought of them, get some extra info, etc.

I'll give it to you that 80% of the "Choose my skis!" threads are stupid. No information about the thread creator at all...waste of space threads...

It's not like you can demo any ski you want. You have to wait till demo days and that's like in January. By then I want to have some new skis.

Agreed mostly. A lot of twintips aren't able to be demo'd though. It's certainly getting better but some specialty skis like rockered skis are sometimes hard to find. And companies like Moment, Bluehouse, or surface and other smaller, newer companies don't have demo's availabe. But ya, a lot of ski threads are a waste of space. Park skis are not meant to be demo'd on rails so it's kind of a crap shoot sometimes.

Never heard of having to be 18 to demo skis, my brother demo'd skis when he was like 12

yea wat i meant was finding a demo shack at one of the mountains. and yes you guys have a point, i guess im just fed up with these crappy threads.

I know what you mean. I'm not gonna lie, I like helping people out, because if I had a legit ski question I'd want someone to answer it for me fully and completely...but the threads that are pointless, unintelligent, and uninformative are just downright stupid and should be deleted. People should know how to make a good thread, and not have to have people wasting posts to remind them what to mention...that could be a good idea for a sticky thread!

I've never had good experiences with demoing skis. The demo bindings are always super heavy and usually not mounted where i would mount them. The ski edges are always wayyy sharp and they don't always have the size you want either. All of these factors just makes it hard to get a true feeling for the ski imo.

Dude its so hard to demo the skis you actually want. Most of the time they never have the ski your looking. Especially for me in the East, theres a demo ski shop at my mountain but it's all race skis. One pair of twin tips but thats all. No fatties, no nothing. And this is why I rely on NS so much when it comes to choosing what skis to buy.

the problem with demoing twins is they werent designed to have a demo binding put on them, and they ski differently because of it.

that being said, i tell like 30% of the people who come into my shop to demo before they buy, just to get a feel for things, especially if they a) dont trust my opinion (even tho we spend a two weeks a year demo-ing everything ourselves to pass on what we thought of the skis) or b) if they dont know what they want.

Ya, demo'ing a non-twin tip is easier cause you know they won't go on rails, and a lot of skis are mounted on lifter plates anyway so the lift from the demo bindings isn't a massive deal.

It's also nice to have a pair of skis to actually classify as your own. Going into the ski season without a pair of skis would leave me exposed and uncomfortable.

I live near a whole grip of mountains, and a whole whack of freeride shops, and I dont think I have ever seen a day where you could go demo, Armada, moment, 4frnt, bluehouse, amplid, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. maybe a k2/ line, or salomon demo day. Once there was a Rossi day at Nakiska but I havnt seen that in a while. if you need info that bad look in the reviews section before posting.

demoing skis is tough, usually mt snow has a salomon tent and the shop lets you demo solly but other than that nothing. but there's talk of dave setting up a moment demo at stratton this year

I don't think they really have ski demoes in maritime Canada-all the shops I've heard of here don't have them, and if they do, it is usually like Salomon, or Rossi skis and if they even have twintips to demo they are usually like in the 160s for length. I don't know, but I think it might be a similar situation for much of the East coast, especially at smaller hills.

I think people would also like to buy a pair of skis before the season starts because there are such good deals. Without any snow to ski on, Demoing becomes very difficult.

SR demo days are late november.. but thats useless as well, considering the dact that there isnt all that much to ski then

damn, you are a fucking idiot. shut the fuck up u dumb ass. u are probably one of the biggest post whores on ns. i rarely every see anything you say that is actually helpful and all you do is post irrelevant or dumb jokes and then say why so serious when people get annoyed with you. shut the fuck up

why so serious?!

jokes.. yeah i kind of agree.. im sick of the sheckler shit and the why so serious.. its basically ruined the dark knight for me

this kid has been on ns for under 120 days and he has 1300 posts, nothing he ever says is helpful and im just sick of his stupid bull shit

you think he actually skis? or just poses, but is really some 40 year old that plays WoW in his moms basement? and just acts like hes a teenage skier

Nobody even mentioned cost. It is like $30 or more to demo a ski for a day at most places I have seen. The whole point of demoing is to decide between a few pairs. If I demo 4 pairs there is $120 down the drain I could have applied to a ski purchase instead.
