Harry potter is ok..... the books..... i'll read them, but the movies, NEVER. i used to be obsessed w/ the books and stuff untill i saw the lord of the rings.....

I can't stand Harry Potter. I think the writing is absolutley terrible and the books are aimed at young people. I think it's atrocious that they are making them all into movies. I've seen both the movies so far and hated them.

You cannot even compare Harry Potter to the Lord Of The Rings, totally different legue. LOTR is a masterpiece, a timeless classic. The movies are absolutley supurb.

Having said that, Harry Potter is a fairly good series for little kids, gets them hooked and teaches them how to read good.

'the books are aimed at young people' hmm, did you figure that out on your own? haha. of course they're aimed at young people. you think adults want to read about a little boy and how he goes to wizarding school?? the language is really simple so they're easy to read, thus the basis of their appeal to kids and their parents.

true true, they don't compare to LOTR. but what can? LOTR is aimed at a more mature audience (teens) and harry potter is more for younger kids. the movies for harry potter also don't compare to LOTR, but that's not the topic of this thread.

The books are good. I liked em. The movies are just like the books. The only similarity between Harry Potter and LOTR is wizards. They arent even the same kind though. I've seen both Harry Potter movies.

And lizziebeth, yes, yes actually I did figure that out all by myself. You should take a look around and see how many adults, parents, and teenagers are reading the Harry Potter stories. I think you will be suprised. I know just as many people older than myself who have read them as I do little people.

And another interesting fact about LOTR. It was actually aimed at children when Tolkien began writing it. It was aimed at 13 year olds + (funny how the standard of reading in people today has dropped so much). It was originally to be a childrens story but he adapted it to create an adults book. He wrote them because he thought that England didn't have enough history (for some reason) and so he set about creating a history for Britain. Right down to languages, places, people and script. Really quite a remarkable product and mind. I don't think anything can ever compare to LOTR, it's simply fantastic, a lifetime of work.

hmm, i thought i implied that nothing could compare to LOTR. well, nothing can. it's a series that is the product of pure genious. i mean, he created his own language and there are volumes and volumes about middle earth aside from the series itself. so yes, phattim, i agree with you.

i suppose one could say that harry potter is the LOTR for the next generation but that would be degrading to LOTR. so i'm not gonna say it, and once again reaffirm the fact that LOTR and harry potter simply can't be compared.

Yes I have seen both Lord of the Rings. I read all the books too. They are some of the best books I've ever read. Definitely the best series. The movies were amazing. I liked Harry Potter though. They arent anywhere close to the same thing though.

I'm partway through one of the Harry Potter books, i'm reading it for an english assignment.

It isn't too bad. I can see why kids would like it. i'm not going to read the rest. too much wasted time. Plus i figure i can steal other peoples projects off the internet for my project. yeeeaah.

The Harry Potter books are really good, and Tolkien's LOTR is BRILLIANT. I've read the books for both, and seen the four movies. The Harry Potter books may be written for kids, but they are still stories that people of all ages can enjoy. Tolkien and his books are classic though, and Harry Potter is in no way a rip-off of LOTR.
