Hard Waxes

Does anyone else have trouble using harder waxes when hot waxing? I'm using Swix CH6 right now, and I always seem to have to use an insane amount of wax to cover the whole ski, because I can't get the wax to flow too good without ironing to the point where I worry about burning the base. I ended up using a 180 gram bar for three waxings. Does anyone have any tips for this? Also is there an easy way to tell when the ski is too hot? I'm guessing the wax will start smoking quite a bit before the base burns right? I'm using a Burton Hot Stick Iron if that means anything.

+K for help.

Rather than pouring the melted wax on, take the bar and rub it on the base. This'll leave an even coating of wax all over which you can easily iron in.

If the wax is smoking your iron's too hot.

Okay, I usually do a base rub and then drip on, but I could try just a base rub I guess. I have never had the wax smoke while on ski, but sometimes the ski gets hot enough that I can just keep my hand on the ski without it being too painful.

If you're still having trouble getting wax on you could leave the bar next to your boiler (or something else warm) for an hour or so before you rub it on.

My bench is next to my boiler room so is super warm. If its cold where your tuning that might be part of the problem.

If the wax isn't melting all the way through when you are making passes you really shouldn't have to worry about scorching the bases. Always crayon it on first to make sure that you have wax so you aren't going directly to the base with the iron. Also make sure the ski is at room temp, and the area you are working is too, this could be a problem if it isn't. You should be able to get ~12+ waxes with 180g. 140 C 284 F for iron temp is what is recomended for CH6

CH6 go on easy, try using a CH4 or a CH3. For a CH6 your iron should be set around 125. One 180 gram block of wax should last you more than three waxes. I can 4-5 waxes out of a brick that size on my EPs, and I lay my wax on HEAVY!! If the wax is smoking, its waaaaay to hot.
