how do i delete my entire hard drive. i want to erase everything and start over with my computer, its loaded with too much junk. thanks

to delete the content of your hard drive it requires 3 simple steps.
1. Locate the hard drive inside the box and remove it.

boot into dos if your running windows XP you cant reformat in windows. but any other operating system i beleive can be formatted in windows.
so if you have 2000 or something just go start, Run. then type 'cmd' and bring up the command prompt (DOS) and type 'format c:' replace 'c' with whatever drive you would like to completly erase.
then once your done formatting run 'fdisk' in the command prompt and partition the drive how you like.
if your running xp boot into dos and follow the same steps.

^ dude, you can't delete windows from within windows... that would defy all reality, it would be like a snake being able to eat itself until it dissapeared (and if you're gonna say some shit about you said to use DOS, command prompt in windows is still IN windows)
So if you want to reinstall windows XP/2000, just pop the Windows CD in, reboot, and begin setup. In there there will be an option to format the partitions of your hard drive... just make sure you read every step carefully instead of just skimming through...(and if you don't want to install windows XP, just cancel out after you've deleted the partitions)(just so you know, with these steps, the drive hasn't been formatted yet, that's the very next step on the CD so you can do that if you want. You can't use a drive unless it's been formatted, basically it's just setting the drive up to be used)
If you use windows ME, 98, 95...
get a windows 98, ME or 95 bootdisk. (I prefer 98 boot disks... check www.bootdisk.com for an easy place to get bootdisks)
pop the disk in, reboot.
type 'format c:' (or whatever drive you want to format, and wait...
although this way may seem easier... you can't use it with windows XP/2000, only windows 95,98,ME... that's because the older windows don't recognize the new file system (the way the drive has been formatted) of Windows XP/2000

No, listen its simple:
stick your windows xp (or w/e your os is) then restart your comp, and press either f8, f9, or f10 (it depends) until it gives u an option to boot from cd. I just press them all if i forget. Then once you boot from cd and get the blue screen of your operating system cd. Find the section where it has 'Partitions' and delete your old partition which is where your hardrive was formatted originally. Then click the 'create new partition on selected space' or w/e it is button, and make the new partition on the space you deleted. That will take a while and then one your done, it will run you through the installation of you operating system and once you install that, your comp will be fresh like the day you bought it.

Just find a Windows XP/2000/98 disc, boot off of it, and format from within it since you're going to need to install the OS anyway. The other ways are too complicated for their own good.
D-loc, please, never speak again, you're a retard. You can't even 'boot into dos' when running Windows XP or 2000, they removed DOS after ME because of how shitty it is, XP and 2k are based off of NT. Other forms of Windows, 95, 98, and ME are all based on DOS and you can do as such.

oh my bad im sorry im to highly advance for you guys because i dont leave my OS on the same harddrive as my other shit. thats just plain STUPID. so yes i can run the command prompt in XP, 2000, XP Pro, 200 Pro what have you and say 'format c:' where all my data is stored and not my OS.
why do you need to format your OS when yuor jsut going to put the same form back on?
sure format everything if your planning on switching OS but i always set my OS aside from other files. makes it run smooth unlike your computers obviously.
then in turn by making my OS run off a differnt drive/ partition i am able to quickly format unused data and be on my way.
NO 2 HOUR INSTALL OF WINDOWS EVER AGAIN IF YOU USE My METHOD.

C)If you had half a brain, you would save money by just using one drive and splitting it into two partitions... or if you DO have two drives, you should at least RAID level 0 that shit.

dude i format ever 4 months or so, doing the same process over and over again. i format all the time within windows since windows is on a totally separate drive it doesnt interfere with other shit. go try it, and tell me it doesnt work.

yes i did RAID shit before my mobo fried with my old processor. i just got a new asus mobo for my athlon 64 chip so i havent had the time to setup the RAID. the RAID is also 2 formats now and im not to familiar with the new technology of RAID transfer speeds.
yes i just happend to have 2 HDD, but when i only had 1 i would jsut partition 10GB for the OS and leave the other 50GB for storage. but right now i have a spare HDD with a backup of my other data and also running my OS. so i can just format the one drive and leave the other to back up file as i need them.
im also about to buy a 250GB HDD to run a server off for my xbox. then i can just stream media through my xbox onto the TV and watch southpark/ family guy/ seinfeld all day long

oh and it is complicated for some... i setup a girls computer with two partitions once, and no matter how hard i tried to explain it, she never used the second partition... so I had to resetup the computer in half...
the point I'm trying to make is that if you try to explain your sitution before making stupid comments and assume people have the setup or whatever as you they won't get pissed off with you as much (i've noticed this happens alot with you)

I read this first paragraph and knew something was up in the mind of this moron.
First off, I do this too, however, I do it a bit differently, I have a 10,000 RPM SATA drive with my programs and Windows on it, but not for the reason of seperating all my data, but so I can use my cheaper and slower 120 gig drive as storage. I still reformat this drive at least three to four times a year. Keeping your OS seperate, however, does not protect it from clutter. You still have old drivers, pieces of installed programs, registry crap, spyware and malware, and other malicious junk thats been floating around since God knows when. Randomly formatting a drive with all your programs is going to fuck it up MORE because your OS is going to be convinced that it has multiple instances of the same software installed.

Mabye if you need to do this on several computers at a company that all need to have the exact set of software on them, but when you're in a home enviroment, the more customization the better. 'oh my bad im sorry im to highly advance for you guys because i dont leave my OS on the same harddrive as my other shit. thats just plain STUPID. so yes i can run the command prompt in XP, 2000, XP Pro, 200 Pro what have you and say 'format c:' where all my data is stored and not my OS.'
I read this first paragraph and knew something was up in the mind of this moron.
First off, I do this too, however, I do it a bit differently, I have a 10,000 RPM SATA drive with my programs and Windows on it, but not for the reason of seperating all my data, but so I can use my cheaper and slower 120 gig drive as storage. I still reformat this drive at least three to four times a year. Keeping your OS seperate, however, does not protect it from clutter. You still have old drivers, pieces of installed programs, registry crap, spyware and malware, and other malicious junk thats been floating around since God knows when. Randomly formatting a drive with all your programs is going to fuck it up MORE because your OS is going to be convinced that it has multiple instances of the same software installed.

Because moron, its Windows, Windows gets cluttered, Windows NEEDS to be reinstalled freshly with fresh updates. This is a well known FACT.
sure format everything if your planning on switching OS but i always set my OS aside from other files. makes it run smooth unlike your computers obviously.

and the best way is to just have an image on a disk so you can just insert, wipe, and throw that windows image with pre-installed apps on your new HDD.
Mabye if you need to do this on several computers at a company that all need to have the exact set of software on them, but when you're in a home enviroment, the more customization the better. anyways, if windows isn't working properly you, don't necessarily have to reinstall it, it can probably be fixed.
If you DO want to reinstall, you've got two main options:
A)backup everything you want to save on CD and do a clean install by reading the top of the thread... before things went to shit
or
B) put the windows CD and do a system repair (basically reinstall windows over top of the windows you have... keeping everything you've got)
I don't like this option as much, as i've seen windows come up pretty buggy after doing this...

actually you can (sorta) format your windows drive when you are in windows (look at the bottom for how)

ok the simple way to remove windows and reinstall is to get your windows cd, then you must boot from the cd. this option is available in the bios. under the boot devices menu make sure that cdrom comes before the hard disk or hdd or something else just make the cdrom the first in the boot order. then once you reboot it will say press any key to boot from cd, obviously push a key to boot from cd. next you are going to want to remove the c partition, then create a new partition and format it using ntfs. From this point on the setup is relatively simple just follow the onscreen commands and if you are not sure about something just choose the default option.(this setup guide is for if you are installing windows xp)
as far as formating your 'c' drive(Assuming 'c' is your windows partition) you can use a couple switches to delete windows enough so that it will not boot on your next reboot. it will remove everything except for the few fies necessary for windows to shut down and the couple it may be using at the moment you choose to format. simply type 'format c: /x' (the '/x' forces the volume to dismount prior to trying to deletion, there is also another switch i cannot remember to suppress the 'cannot delete file because it is in use' and continue on without that. it can also be done by going to to the root of the c drive (so it says c:\> with no directories after that) and you can type 'del * /f/s/q'
