sadly I tore my acl this summer and i won't be able to ski at all this year. Any suggestions for things to do over the winter?

Shit girl I'm sorry. Did the same thing last summer, partially tore my acl on the glacier then 2nd day skiing in winter blew it the rest of the way. It suuuuucks. I had school so that helped but try and find a hobby. I took up some crafting, making jewellery and stuff, then once I was able to just went hard with Physio and hitting the gym. Photography? Editing/videography? Search bar "ACL" there's a ton of threads like this that you can creep and find some good ideas.

Are you getting a reco? If so what kind?

I tore mine in 2012. I took up the bulk of my time studying, working and in the gym. Apart from that once you're up for it hiking, swimming, bike riding are all good things that will help your knee. If you're interested you can take little courses online and watch documentaries online. Other than spend more time wtih your friends that don't ski or make friends that don't ski and do what they do. Sometimes ski season gets so busy you neglect them so that can be good.

I hope you have a good recovery! Make sure to work your medial quad (The band of your quad that goes to the inside of your knee as it's really important in stability and skiing. And don't forget your glutes!

I tore my ACL a few years ago(5ish) then again about 6-8 months later. I wasn't so into skiing at the time but I was competing nationally in gymnastics, so it was my entire life so I definitely feel ya. It definitely sucks not being able to do the shit you love.

At the time I worked my ass off on other areas of my body(arm, core, etc). Depending on how much you care about those parts of your body, I'd say workout those. It helps to keep you active and not sitting around getting depressed about things.

Also, if you're not into working out, I'd highly, highly, highly recommend focusing on school(if you're in school). Seriously, it's a great time to take a step back and focus on your other main priorities. I was only in middle school at the time so I didn't really do this, but if it were to happen again(I pray it doesn't) I would probably be doing that.

To help the recovery process, I recommend eating an extremely healthy diet. Many people overlook it but it'll speed up healing and it makes you less depressed about not being able to do what you love. Do what they tell you in physical therapy and push yourself without going too far. Ex. Once they tell you that you can do something, take full advantage of it. Ease into it, but don't stop pushing yourself.

Best of luck girl! I promise you'll come out of this with a stronger knee and you'll be able to kill it out there better than before!

I crochet, it's definitely a winter hobby that passes the time. It's super easy too.
