Hand made skis Monkey edition

Hey awsome comunity of skiers, I'm a university student from Québec, Canada and I finished my first pair of handmade skis. Everything was made out of my hands and tools. No use of CNC or any automatization process. Here is a little recap/specs of the build. Enjoy!!!

I started this project in 2019 as a way to spend some free time and learn how skis where made. After trying to make a press, I realised I had neither the right tools nor the knowledge to realise this project. I studied the subject for a year and got myself better tools. In 2020 I started over again and made a press. I then bought the base layer material and edges to make the first step of the build which went well. I then contacted an experienced woordworker who gave me informations on what type of wood to use. For what I needed (soft and durable) a mix of poplar and beech was the best option. This is what I went with. I then proceeded to make the strips and glued them together to make the core layer. While trying to taper the tips and tails, I realized that the tools I had where still not great, plus I was working outside and It was getting because of winter so I set the project on pause. When I came back to my school in presential (2021) I realized I had access to an anwsome woodworking shop (great tools and heated). I brought back my materials and went back to building my skis. With school work, it took more time that I expected finishing it, but hey, sometimes it's good to take the time to do things correctly. Over 2022 and 2023, I was able to press down my skis, paint them, put a protective layer on top, mount the bindings and shred them. They work perfectly fine, but I know what are the small adjustements I need to do when I will start my next pair.

Here are my handmade skis: MNKY Vagabonds, 180 cm, 115 mm underfoot, rocker/camber/rocker, fish tails, 100% wood core, Marker Griffons 13 Bindings.

Bro took the term "handmade" literally.

RIP OP's hands.

how do they handle with ollie’s/general jibbing?

They work really well to be honnest. At first I was kinda nervous to try them as I ddn't know if they would break, but after a full day on the snow and going faster and faster each run they are pretty sturdy. I tried to hit jumps and do ollie as well, They might be a little too soft in my opinion.

Where do you go to school in Quebec? looks like you got some dope resources at your hand.

I go to the Royal Military College of Canada, it's in Ontario, but I am from Québec.

Lets me know si tu cherches des testeurs ;)

Those look sick. Really impressive to do them all by hand. You should post them on the skibuilders.com forum.

Just curious, where did you buy the edges. Im in Qc also and the only thing I cant find locally are the edges. All the places that sell them are either in the us or europe and the shipping is really expensive.

Super impressive mate. Congrats on doing something so many of us dream about

Thank you very much, It’s nice to hear that. I’m so proud of this project and it gives me motivation to make even better skis. It was a dream of mine same as some of you. It’s just a matter of starting it and learn about it. I was scared to fail but I did it anyways and I think it’s the reason that stops many people to do the same as I did. Worst that can happen is a few bucks worth of material and time lost.

Those are some really cool skis, good job man! If you’re in Kingston bring them to the local ski shop, sepps. The owner there Mike would love to see them. Tell him van in tbay sent you, I know him
