I would diagree that snowboarding HP has fully exploited the potential of terrain parks. If we had BOTH skiing and snowboarding in the Olympics with a HP event, then there would be that many more groms at the grassroots level participating in pipe and park. Resorts will have to expand their terrain offerings as a result.
As to the other issues, I agree with opinions like Melvs' that it will inject much-needed money into the sport. In my opinion, there is NO WAY pro skiers should have B- or C-rated incomes compared to pro snowboarders and other action sports stars. Having HP skiing showcased in the Olympics will give new school freestyle the global exposure it deserves.
Most pros are absolutely in favour of HP skiing at the Olympics. As much as an X-Games gold is amazing, there's no substitute for Olympic gold. It's on a whole other level. There is no reason in my mind why snowboarding should have halfpipe and not skiing. If a substitute is necessary, then maybe drop traditional aerials. That would be sad, and I would hate to see it happen, but there have got to be MANY more HP riders today than aerialists.
As for judging, people whine and whine about FIS. Get over it! While I agree that there is the odd FIS imbecile at the grassroots level who doesn't have a clue about new school, anyone who actually knows the true state of judging knows that FIS judges consistently get it RIGHT, and ex-pro/non-FIS dinosaurs like Loubek get it WRONG. Just look at WSI 2003 with Tufflemire's one-hit HP win -- a travesty!! And X-Games 2004 HP where Olsson and Crichton got ripped off -- don't get me started!
The sure path to the Olympics for HP skiing is by having the top riders attend World Cup and World Championship events. This will show the IOC that the sport is ready for admission. The pros have started to do this, and will hopefully continue. There's no reason for them not to: the judging is usually better, the comps are actually well organized and there's prize money, too.
