Hacktool.Rootkit trojan

ok, so my friend sends me this link and i made a dumb-ass mistake and clicked on it...next thing i know, norton's telling me i have this hacktool.rootkit trojan. i guess it's one of those things that randomly sends an IM w/ it to everyone on your buddy list. anyway, so i go to the website and do what it tells me to do, so i run the LiveUpdate and then i did a virus scan and it found nothing. I have the latest version of Norton's Anti-Virus. I did a second scan and again it found nothing. My friend told me that a friend of hers told her to downlaod this free anti-virus thing called AVG Free because she didnt have an updated anti-virus software.

My question is....should I stick with just using Norton's or should I downloas this other thing? And all this trouble started earlier today, so if i have a virus (even though the scans say i don't) would it show up right away and start w/ the random IMs now or is this something that could start after a few days?

another question...because everything on my computer is the latest update adn what not (i bought my compuetr like a month and a half ago), is it possible that becuase nortion detected it right away and i ran all the stuff asap, that it's all taken care of and that this trojan is not on my computer anymore?

i hope this all makes sense and that im not confusing anyone.

i duno bout dl the other anti virus shit... if norton killed it real quick then i might have made a pop up. if you can look at the logs and if you see it in there as deleted then ur good but i dunno. I got some Etrust pestpatrol thingy and as soon as sumthing comes it killz it

the two programs t-man said to download mad long ago whenhe was still around work perfectly on my computer. they are spybot search and destroy, and like avg virus protection. both free.

if norton was on and updated, it scans everything that comes into your computer. I'm sure it said that the file contained a virus, tried to delete the threat, failed then either quarantined it or deleted it and it was done with. You can even go look into the history for norton somewhere's and it will show you what happened.

AVG is a great, free antivirus tool that once norton runs out, i'd suggest getting instead of renewing norton if you don't want to renew Norton.

I had norton and it never deleted anything, just said delete failed so I'd suggest getting something else for future viruses

Norton is crap, way to bulky on your system, any computer expert will tell you to totally get rid of it and use AVG / Antivir / or Mcafee

there free versions are really good

I use AVG and it is really good, I got rid of Norton

and I use Antivir now & then but AVG seems to find everything

well anyways, i got rid of it, so that's good. ran a couple scans to amke sure it was done for, and it was. thanks everyone for your suggestions. im just glad i was able to get rid of it asap before it got worse.

yes ROLLBACK windows... it will get rid of virus's and spyware.

trust me all that porn i gotta be rollin back like every day;0

oh and always hold the mouse over a link fora few seconds to see where it is directing you. or right click and copy the link then paste to see what it is
