Grrrrr, USD and Bacons

So yes, the Grrrr indicates that I'm in a pickle and quite upset about how the USD (american dollar) has gotten so much more powerful. The reason for this? And why it's in gear talk or even on NS at all?

Because it involves me getting a pair of Sir Francis Bacons. A couple weeks ago it was all fine and dandy with the two dollars (Canadian and American) being relatively close, but now it would cost me about 30% extra total cost.

So, I have a way to get them for $510 from the shop, but I'll end up paying around $690. Not fair. I could get them for $740 from a Canadian shop, but why would I do that?

So, what ways can I bypass the system? If the Canadian dollar gets better than this is quite pointless, but if not I might end up paying too much. Lying to a border person is out of the question. I already did that once and they'd probably try to throw me in jail if they caught me again.

If there was a canadian shop that had some of last years for cheap, that would work. Anyone know one?
Or anyone know of a better deal on a new pair (this years or last years) in the US than $510?

Maybe this should be in B/S/T, but as I'm not buying, selling or trading, I dunno. It's gear related.

Help please,

Thanks.

im not sure how this whole money exchange works. but couldnt you just buy them from a place like jibij because they ship to canada? or would they still charge you in canadian dollars?

They charge US dollars, but once you pay with a credit card the credit card charges the exchange rate of the price. So basically add 10% with because one US dollar is $1.10 Canadian, then add 5% GST and 7% PST (Canadian taxes), and 8% duty because they're made in china. Sucks mad balls.

And at the border someone looks over the package and charges an extra COD of the taxes that the store didn't charge.

show somebody how legit you are and have them buy them for you. maybe you know somebody in the states?

otherwise...

wait? why are they more expensive in canada?

Because that's the way things happen to be... It sucks, everything is usually 25% more expensive here than in the US.

If they were bought in the states I'd still need to either bring them across the border or have them shipped across the border. The gov't charges either way. Damn that sucks, eh?

Thanks for the suggestion though...

Why would you have to pay tax when bringing them back across the border? Just have someone buy them in the US and get them mounted. Go pick them up in the US and then just say you were skiing, not shipping something new into the country. Would that work? I have no idea how border customs work.

ya just have some one you know buy them for you and go pick them up. just dont say you bought them there. i do it all the time when i buy stuff when im in whistler

That would work, but the place I can ship to really easily is this tiny bit of land called Point Roberts. It's US territory but it doesn't connect to any land in the US, just canadian land. It was accidentally made when the people making the borders missed that tiny chunk of land.

Long story short, you can't mount them (too small of a town to have a ski shop) or say you were skiing (does not attach to any US mountains).

I might be able to get them to mainland US, but it'd be harder to find a US address. The only way you have to pay tax is if you claim that you bought them. However, if they notice that you didn't claim them and search they can write a criminal file and charge a huge fine.

sucks man. but you're best bet is to have someone buy em in the US, mount em and say you were skiing or something when you pick em up.

this is going to turn into a hypothetical suggestion/political/economy oriented thread though.

good luck mang

Yeah, that would be the easiest route, if someone was willing. Thanks.

I hope it doesn't become one of those threads...

if you dont use that discount on anything, maybe you could pass on the discount!!! haha im trying to find some bacons like mad!

searchbar backcountry. There was a thread not long ago where there's an NS discount. Just PM the thread creator and he'll hook you up.
