Groomer runs over a kid at Brighton!

A 12-year-old Ontario boy was recovering slowly on Thursday after being run over by a snow-grooming machine while on a school ski trip.

Officials say Austin Miles was at the Mount Brighton Ski Area Wednesday when he lost control and skied in front of the machine. It struck and dragged him 40 to 60 metres before the operator realized what had happened, said reports.

It took about an hour to free him from the machine.

Austin, from Amherstburg, Ont., was initially listed in critical condition at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, but on Thursday, his condition was said to be improving, and officials noted that the boy had begun to wiggle his toes.

The Grade 7 student from Amherstburg Public School was on a school ski trip along with his parents.

Superintendent Sharon Pyke said the Greater Essex County District School Board is investigating.

"When an incident like this happens, certainly we take a look at our policies and procedures to ensure we have covered all possible contingency plans," she said.

When students return to classes Friday, there will be help available if they need it, Pyke said.

"As soon as they arrive, there will be a crisis team comprised of social workers and psychologists at the school to assist the teachers," she said. "When the students come, most likely they will have some questions and they will be talking about those answers."

Amherstburg is located in the southern tip of Ontario, about 20 kilometres south of Windsor.

um yeah are you sure? cause i just spent 5 mins searching and i couldn't find anything

PS i used foxnews.com and a general google search

i was gonna say, im from ontario and my public school never fuckin went skiing in utah, michigan makes alot more sense

OOOOOOOO...wouldn't that suck to be in a good solid high speed carve and hit a 7th grader patch....man you'd have to have mad skills to recover from a bump like that....

I thought most mountains stopped running cats on open trails for this reason. They did atleast here on the east; maybe because we have more idiots and bad skiers.

maybe its just cause I live in alaska, but i've never seen groomers run on an open trail. but gawd...this whole thing has me kinda speechless

that poor kid...reminds me of an incident at my local mx track.. a kid didn't see the watertruck at the landing of a jump and went off the jump at full speed and hit the truck almost immediately after...couldn't believe he was alive... two broken femurs, ribs, legs, and head injuries.

hope he recovers well

dude, this same thing happened a few years back at my home resort (wintergreen VA). it was this chick's first time skiing and she didn't get a lesson. they had pegasus (emergency medical helicopter) before they even could get a snowmobil to her.

her parrents sued

they won

couple more years for the new lift to be put in.

That's awesoem taht he's still alive, but damn that would suck!..I can't even imagine how scary that would eb being stuck under one a those.......

yea really, i work at a resort as park staff, and one morning we had the groomer out grooming/building some lips for a few of your most popular rails. and the driver back up toi far and dropped the tiller right onto out 45foot flatbar,. the rail got bent so bad it was unrideable( and a huge waste of about 3000 bucks for production costs) and the other end lifted out of the snow.

we just ended up turning the 45 foot flatbar into a 30, but that just gives you an idea of how powerful those things are.

the tiller itself weight almost one tonne, apart from the whole fuckin groomer.

i cant beleive that kid is alive.

People are attracted to shiny things. and non shiny things like snowcats and snowmobiles. it draws certain people in, they can't seem to turn. they look at it and go right for it. I was sitting still on my sled a couple weeks ago at work and watched a lady come from the top of the beginner run and i swear from the top she aimed right for me. had to start the sled and move real quick like so she wouldn't hit a parked sled that wasn't even running.
