GRINDING A RAIL

come up to the rail with some speed, pop, and then turn roughly 90 degrees and lean forwards down the hill. but most of all COMMIT!!!

keep your feet fairly wide apart too, and have your front foot angled at like 45 degrees. and yeah definately commit. If its gap on, pop with one ski on either side of the rail

shit my picture did not work, oh well, practice makes perfect, don't get your mind all bunched up on textbook style just get your feeling and improve on it.

^haha nice

look at the end of the rail, not your feet, you dont need to lean forward or angle your skis at all, just look at the end of the rail and thats where your balance will be focused on.

word, if you're looking at the end you'll have no problem. Your body tends to go where you look, so looking straight down the rail will make you go straight and you should have no problem cleaning it.

commit. if u dont commit you will crash!

dont lean bak eitha. its sorta like dropping in on a skateboard..

need ta keep ya weight forward

most people call it sliding a rail but that really dosent matter just no matter what you do never call it a skier slide like that dude in that aspen free ride vid.

but id say start out on boxes to get a feel for it.

what i thought about when i learned, was to make sure that u came off of the jump before u try to spin. wait till ur in the air and then start thinkin about the 90...be patient...be relaxed...and most of all commit.

find a sick grindbar, build a nice ramp with a little kick.

get some speed, hit the ramp and commit to the stunt.

preferably with your eyes on the prize!

find a ride on and turn on before. then youll start to do it in the air. then just move to one with a gap. it worked for me

I found rails easier than boxes, because they're less slippery. Dunno, but you might want to try little rails as well as boxes.

i tryed a rail before a box. it was before i skiieed park and i had been skiing pow all day and figured if i fell it wouldnt hurt. i fell off but felt cool but then tryed to slide a box and fell and hit my hip

try a box before a rail...learn balance...not sure what boxes u been hittin but usually boxes in da midwest are easier than our rails? anybody agree with me?

rail inbetween feet, pop, turn 90, stay low (gorilla steeze) and put a little more wieght on your front than your back if your falling back. To do so just put one hand in frong of your boot and the other kind of in between your legs, its hard to explain but once you do that you wont fall back.

yes but what about WEIGHT? I reckon there are some differing opinions about sliding down rails. some people say weight in between legs while others say relentlessly that you need ALL your weight on the downhill ski??? which is best?

anyway i'm trying to progress a little and can't work out if its better to keep your leading foot flat on the rail or at a slight angle? are there any official answers for a clean 90 on 90 off rail?

in fact do people either think:

Weight: between legs/all on leading leg?

Leading foot angle: flat/slight angle?

Railslide is one of the many tricks that you can perform on straight

rails. In this section, learn how to do a Railslide. You can use the

animation as you go through our easy-to-follow steps.

railslide-step1.gif

STEP 1: To start off, ski at moderate speed and approach the rail.

railslide-step2.gif

STEP 2: As you reach the rail, twist 90 degress so your Skis will be perpendicular to the rail. Make sure that the soles of your Ski Boots are at the center of the rail to maintain balance.

STEP 3: Glide smoothly and keep your weight centered

on both feet in order to stay balanced. Focus at the end of the rail.

This will really help you to finish the trick sucessfully.

STEP 4: As you reach the end of the rail, turn your

shoulders the way you want to exit. Your Skis should be parallel to the

rail before you land.

STEP 5:

Slide off the rail for a smooth landing and then ride away.

This is one of the basic maneuvers that you can do on straight rails.

Get comfortable in moving on rails or boxes so you can progress to more

difficult tricks.

select some RnB on your iPod, take off your skis, walk up behind the rail and start airhumping then buy it a drink

Here's a great exercise that you can practice at home to help you figure out your balance/weighting:

Put a skateboard on the ground in front of you and hop forwards to land on it. Start small and then gradually increase the gap.

Once you can do that, try taking a bit of speed into it, walking in at first and then eventually coming in at a jog and hopping on with some good forward momentum.

Obviously, the board is going to move when you land on it, and the balance that you need for landing on and rolling with the board is almost identical to how you will need to balance when you hop onto a rail.

The other nice thing about this exercise, is it will teach you to land with feet at 90 degrees.

Remember to start small, and if you are really sketched out on trying it at first you can even have somebody spot you by standing to the side and holding your hand (no homo :)) the first few times. It will get easy after some time, just like rails....

Hope that helps, have fun!

most people when trying to slide a rail for the first time try to slide it like they slide when they stop on skis. its nothing like that. if you do that you will slip back

thats actually how i learned. someone told me that it was like running and jumping onto a skateboard. the truth is, theres no wrong way to do it. just go for it the first few times and eventually you will figure out a way that works for you. so next time youre thinking things through, just go for it, falling off wont hurt all that much anyways

little advice more speed you have the easier it is but you want your weight centered so you dont slip out

the first time i ever cleaned a decent rail was about my 20th try

whatever you do dont give up just commit pop turn and focus on the end of the rail
