Greenland ice loss 'accelerating'

By Richard Black

Environment correspondent, BBC News website

The Ilulissat glacier has retreated by approximately 15km over the past decade

The Greenland ice sheet is losing its mass faster than in previous years and making an increasing contribution to sea level rise, a study has confirmed.

Published in the journal Science, it has also given scientists a clearer view of why the sheet is shrinking.

The team used weather data, satellite readings and models of ice sheet behaviour to analyse the annual loss of 273 thousand million tonnes of ice.

Melting of the entire sheet would raise sea levels globally by about 7m (20ft).

For the period 2000-2008, melting Greenland ice raised sea levels by an average of about 0.46mm per year.

If you multiply these numbers up it puts us well beyond the IPCC estimates for 2100

Professor Roger Barry

Since 2006, that has increased to 0.75mm per year.

"Since 2000, there's clearly been an accelerating loss of mass [from the ice sheet]," said lead researcher Michiel van den Broeke from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

"But we've had three very warm summers, and that's enhanced the melt considerably.

"If this is going to continue, I cannot tell - but we do of course expect the climate to become warmer in the future."

In total, sea levels are rising by about 3mm per year, principally because seawater is expanding as it warms.

Sea change

Changes to the Greenland sheet and its much larger counterpart in Antarctica are subjects commanding a lot of interest within the scientific community because of the potential they have to raise sea levels to an extent that would flood many of the world's major cities.

The 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report projected a sea level rise of 28-43cm during this century.

But it acknowledged this was almost certainly an underestimate because understanding of how ice behaves was not good enough to make reliable projections.

By combining different sources of data in the way it has, and by quantifying the causes of mass loss, the new study has taken a big step forwards, according to Roger Barry, director of the World Data Center for Glaciology at the University of Colorado in Boulder, US.

"I think it's a very significant paper; the results in it are certainly very significant and new," he said.

"It does show that the [ice loss] trend has accelerated, and the reported contribution to sea level rise also shows a significant acceleration - so if you multiply these numbers up it puts us well beyond the IPCC estimates for 2100."

Professor Barry was an editor on the section of the IPCC report dealing with the polar regions.

On reflection

An ice sheet can lose mass because of increased melting on the surface, because glaciers flow more quickly into the ocean, or because there is less precipitation in the winter so less bulk is added inland.

The new research shows that in Greenland, about half the loss comes from faster flow to the oceans, and the other half from changes on the ice sheet itself - principally surface melting.

The Grace satellites provide a twin eye on gravity at the Earth's surface

Another analysis of satellite data, published in September, showed that of 111 fast-moving Greenland glaciers studied, 81 were thinning at twice the rate of the slow-moving ice beside them.

This indicates that the glaciers are accelerating and taking more ice into the surrounding sea.

Melting on the ice sheet's surface acts as a feedback mechanism, Dr van den Broeke explained, because the liquid water absorbs more and reflects less of the incoming solar radiation - resulting in a heating of the ice.

"Over the last 10 years, it's quite simple; warming over Greenland has caused the melting to increase, and that's set off this albedo feedback process," he told BBC News.

"Quite likely the oceans have also warmed, and it's likely that explains the [acceleration of] outlet glaciers because they're warmed from below."

Data provided over just the last few years by the Grace satellite mission - used in this study - is giving researchers a closer view of regional variations across the territory.

Grace's twin satellites map gravity at the Earth's surface in unprecedented detail; and it is now possible to tease out from the data that most of the mass is being lost in the southeast, southwest and northwest at low elevations where the air will generally be warmer than at high altitudes.

Professor Barry cautioned that the Grace mission, which has produced valuable data about Antarctica as well as Greenland, has only a further two years to run, and that no replacement is currently scheduled.

we are already so fucked that it doesnt even matter, we need to cut down on our carbon emissions by somethin like 90% in the next 50 year or else we are fucked, and theres now way in hell thats gonna happen, read Heat by some dude i forget right now because im drunk but it tells you all about this shit

the ice is actually rising and growing in the center of greenland.

Its not that abnormal for southern greenland to not have ice. The vikings settled there are farmed during the Medieval warm period.

i've been reading that average global temperature has been slowly cooling in recent years. so whats causing the accelerated ice loss? is it just warmer in that specific area?

global temps have been dropping the last 10 years.

It could be sublimation...

Mt Kilimanjaro, which Al Gore said was the victim of human caused global warming has seen a decrease in temperatures and hardly any times above freezing, even though its ice cap has been decreasing for a long time. It's the sublimation of the ice that has caused it to decrease. Greenland is much much different than africa, so it could be unrelated, Im just putting it out there as a possible reason besides warmer temperatures.

Global Warming is a fucking scam to make money and gain more government control and tax the shit out of every company for their carbon emissions for more money. They love to highlight the ice loss and glacier melts but don't tell you about the glaciers that have grown or the places where it's actually cooled. Our planet has underwent many climate changes that were fucking drastic before man even knew what fire was.

lol I see this thread going places. Congrats to everyone who chooses to argue this bullshit, good to know some people think for themselves these days.

granted, the boston globe is the worst paper in the world. I don't know if anyone lies as consistently as they do.

in order to stop the so called "global warming," the only thing we can do is kill ourselves or start living underground and eating roots. If you tell that to the sheep, I'm sure you will get a few suicides and a bunch of hopeless idiots who start building homes underground. Almost as stupid as giving up a perfectly good car and spending a ton of money on a hybrid just to have a hybrid. cash for clunkers anyone? what a woeful failure.

Well until I see snowpatterns changing drastically in the wrong direction then maybe i'll care. Lately it's been dumping and this year resorts are open so early. And in general its been snowing more than average over the past few seasons.

guys i heard the land bridge across the bering straight melted the other day!!! how will siberians migrate to the americas now!!!

you wont see significant changes in snow patterns in our lifetimes but i kids and kids kids are gonna have a tuff time shredding

He is super super serial. Beacuse of global warming all of us will die some day.

i know exactly what it is and you right pertaining to that but i disagree entirely about saying global warming is a scam. yes the earth has gone threw natural up and down in temperature over the past 260 million years ago, but following the patters the earth should be following we should be in some of the coldest weather of the past 100 years yet we are in the warmest. Disregarding all the carbon emissions that humans create and saying that we aren't heating our planet up is ignorant in my eyes. And yes it may be cool now but that is because you are looking at it in a small scale. if you look towards the next 100 years our carbon emissions are going to double if we stay at the same rate we are going. this could cause as much as 2 degrees in a global average temperature which as a result could lead to methane being released from deep in the arctic ocean causing even more climate change.
so ya global warming is a total scam

global climate change is an entirely natural process and as I know you know, the earth works in cycles. the earth has seen warming before, it has seen cooling cycles before, it will warm again, and it will cool again but there is no statistical increase in temperatures since 1998. we have only accelerated the process of climate change. new science discoveries are emerging supporting the fact that solar activity is an overlooked factor in climate change and the "warming" everyone is so worried about. also, another problem with the carbon=warming is that temperatures have been found to rise before CO2 levels. science is extremely corrupt nowadays. Organizations like the IPCC have a lot of errors in their reports that they claim as facts. they know they have made those errors too but to fix them would mean that they would be proven wrong. be careful where you get your information from.

Part one of a great documentary on what I'm talking about:

Now, even though I don't agree with the media pushed version of climate change, I'm a Natural Resources Management major and think it is extremely important that we do reduce our emissions and environmental impact. However, doing this through things such as cap and trade, scare tactics and sanctions are not the way to go.

on a side note, the melting of this ice can also help to reduce co2 emissions.

this is the biggest puss argument on earth. It basically allows you to make these trumped up claims without any fear of ever being proven wrong during your lifetime. OH MY GOD, TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO RISE.....IN 200 years!! In the event that doesn't happen, you can still keep saying the same fucking thing without reaping the repercussions of your idiocy.

Climate warming is all bullshit. The stats are so off the wall depending on who is doing them. The co2 level raise proceeds the warming trends rather than preceding so al gores shit is out the window. Humans actully have little to no impact on the climate.

wow that is a very strong argument. im glad to see that someone can rebuttal with a such a well thought out opposing opinion. global warming in the next 50 years will not be so drastic as to effect things such as snow fall and whether it is hot of cold in the winter but as for places such and greenland, polar ice caps, and high elevation low latitude mountains such as Kilimanjaro will and are be effected greatly. In places in alaska permafrost has been thawing cause great damage to a lot of structures. this is all happening during a time when the earth should naturally be cooling, not heating up.

if you look at the second graph ,which is on a timescale of years, comparing the temperature average of 1900 to the temperature average of 2000 it up almost 3/4th of a degree and even the recent drop described in the article is above what it was in the 1900. just something to keep in mind

ok, i know NS is a morass of ignancy but seriously? when the fuck did you get so obnoxiously blinded by fox news conservatism?i saw this too ... bbc front page article in google news. there is no conspiracy. there is no reason for a conspiracy... no one would benefit from that. american style consumerism has only existed for 60 years or so and somehow it has seeped so completely into everyone's minds as normalcy that they forget how incredibly differently humanity's existence was before we started mining and burning every single resource we could get our hands on. there are consequences to our actions. we live in a closed system that responds to change on a massive and long term scale. anyway, you all disgust me. my mind's boggled.
