Greek Life Opinions

I see a lot of people out there hating on fraternities/sororites. I AM a member of a fraternity, and im sick and tired of hearing people sit there and talk shit about 'frats' when they have know idea what they're all about. Yes, theres dumb shit that goes on during pldeging, and most of us a drunken pussy hounds. But I think all of the stereotypes about fraternities and sororities, like theyre whores, stuck up rich assholes and all that shit, comes from all the movies out there. I mean, shit, I'm broke as a fuckin joke and am struggling to even pay for my food, and am in no way a rich little kid who is supported by their parents. Movies like beta hosue and animal house are accurate to a point, but girls just don't walk around topless and sleep with everything with a dick. The parties are always wild, but that shit jsut doesn't happen. I go to a smaller school, under 2000 students, and i know that our greek life is different from larger schools. But in my fraternity there under 20 of us, not 100 members like big schools. We are jsut a a group of best friends who all have common interest, everybody I live with is either a skier or a snowboarder, and we just have fun together and get a little wild every now and then (4 or 5 days a week). The people the hate on us - sorority and fraternity members - are the people that have no idea what being 'Greek' is all about.

I guess the main reason I'm writing up this little rant is to expell all the rumors and try and get people to stop hating and talking shit about fraternities and sororities.

So lets hear your opinion and let the hate fest begin.

i really dont care what other people choose to do with their lives but i hate when people refer to fraternitys/sororitys as "greek life".

i also think its buying friends/connections/status and that its fucking retarded. atleast from my expieriences at UofU

I haven't even seen a thread hating on fraternities or sororities in idk how long so I'm confused as to why you chose to go and rant about it....besides the fact that the thought of others disagreeing with what you like seems to make you insecure.
You shouldn't care what others think about your "greek life" if it's something you enjoy. I don't care, and most other people won't care if they take the time to read your thread, so don't worry about what others think.

fraternaties are for a good cause, as long as they dont get out of hand, my dad happens to be on the board of a major fraternity and fraternities are a great way to meet people with common interests as well as learning leadership qualities

Yea you pay for friends. Pledging: You get to do a bunch of gay degrading shit to try to gain ins with a bunch of kids that you don't know.

Frat parties are worse than normal parties because of all the elitism. I've been to a few frat parties and they have sucked. Just creepers that don't fit in socially with normal people so they have to kick all of them out so they have better chances at taking advantage of girls or sluts. But hey they don't have to worry, because i'm sure the pledgers will be sucking alot of dick anyways.

Party 5 days a week? Claim more frat boy. That means you either have alot of deep set issues, or are a straight alcoholic.

Pledging? Yeah, you get degraded and have to pay for "brothers". All you did was prove a bunch of stereotypes. I've met probably a total of 3 kids in frats that aren't pricks. And money has nothing to do with it you're right on that one.

I

I haven't seen anything on here in over a year, but I was on the lift with 2 kids over the weekend who were just putting them down

I forgot one thing, you've obviously got money if you're reppin all that new gear on the mountain. don't even try to pull that.

there ya go, there's always positives. I'm sure the networking power of being in fraternity upon graduation is great, it would probably help me out big time right now in my job search.

i'm in a fraternity as well (TKE).sure, the stereotypes are annoying and for the most part untrue. but it's just something you've gotta live with and get over.most of my friends make fun of me for it, and i'm ok with that.
fuck, half the guys in my chapter are either skiers or snowboarders, so we just go to the mountain and cause shenanigans

you took the time to write out what i was too lazy to do.

I hate most of the people I have met that were in frats and sororities. A lot of them have this entitled opinion of themselves.

To the OP; please try to not sound like a retard when you are talking about the Greek system. Its embarrassing for all of us. And to everyone else hating on Fraternities and Sororities; it is very easy to hate on something you do not understand or have never been a part of. I can assure you that although houses are different around the country, a majority of them are built on the higher ideals of better learning and friendship. It is a common misconception that all Fraternities are filled with "bros" (and sometimes this may be the case) but it is simply not true. It sucks to hear people degrade a system which means so much to you simply because they have never been a part of it or understand it. I am sorry if anyone has had problems with the Greek system in the past, but I hope you don't judge all houses because of a few isolated experiences and general stereotypes.

At its core, a fraternity is a bunch of friends living together in a big house with very few rules. Sounds like fun to me.

You're being ignorant.

All black people like fried chicken and waffles, preferably together.

Mexicans are lazy.

Asians are good at math but not socializing.

How come stereotypes are always true when applied to frats, but not minorities?

The parties suck, that's my only real knock on them. Something about standing behind a shitty 2x4 bar turns people into assholes. Aside from that, I could care less if people want to wear the same shirt every other day of the week.

Because unfortunately the people that are most closely related to frats and sororities are the people that live to BE the stereotype and are always wearing the Tshirts and sweatshirts with their houses' letters on it.

The stupidest and loudest always get noticed. Is the entire Republican party as idiotic as Glenn Beck? No, but you could be forgiven for thinking so because he's so noticeable that he seems representative.

You just haven't met all the chill frats and guy you think don't exist. By their very nature they're obscured in public perception by the obnoxious assholes.

When I was at WSU I pledged to Farmhouse because I went to high school with probably 10 of the 80 members at WSU. I didn't finish it cause of the stupid shit you have to do to become a part of the house.

"Wash my feet pledge!"

"Fuck you"

And that was when I left. I went to a couple frat parties... most moronic shit I have ever been to, guys posturing like moronic peacocks all "look at my muscle and spray on tan!!!!!" Jersey Shore like shit.

Since coming to EWU it hasn't really changed and that is going from a huge school to a much smaller school. Still elitist assholes in frats that are still trying to be big guy on campus since leaving their small 1 school town (as in K-12 in the same building) that spend their free time drinking or lifting weights to try and look like Goku from DragonBall Z muscle wise. And even then, they don't even know how to properly use said muscles cause like 7 of them joined the local MMA club I am part of. They are all gone now since everyone of them has had their ass kicked by " nerds" like me that look like this:

And made their face look like this:

There may be nice normal people in frats and sororities but the ratio of nice chill people to total douchebags is like 6:1 at the lowest.

My fraternity is absolutely nothing like your stereotypes. I really

don't care if you believe me because I'm perfectly comfortable with the

decision I made; I'm only here because I like to argue.

It sucks you had a bad experience Panda, but it sounds like you chose the wrong frat. Maybe if you had spent some time looking around for a good fit instead of just blindly throwing in with one you wouldn't have such a bad opinion of Greek life in general. All fraternities are not the same. I've never had to wash anybody's feet or do anything similarly demeaning.

You aren't helping your cause to show not all frat members are idiots.

I see "ignorant dicktoucher" as a comeback and I think this:

1163955324-douchebag.jpg

It's just another stereotype. You could say that all park skiers are

stuck-up wiggers with daddy's credit card who take themselves

altogether too seriously and it would seem pretty true to anybody

outside the community. But if you choose to ignorantly lump me

with the worst of my community then I just don't care enough about your

opinion to even be offended.

Recognize that real life is not as black and white and it would be convenient to assume. Yes there are douchebags, but that doesn't mean we all are.

fuck all frats, burn em down.

my brother was in a frat too.

i don't give a shit how you try to justify it to me you're GENERALLY all idiots....there are very very few exceptions at my school .. iup

my brothers and father were all in frats and i plan to join a sorority next year. i personally think they are a great way to meet people and form lifelong friendships. and of course, it provides for a great party scene. but i know that my dad is still best friends with his frat brothers and my brothers still go back to their houses to visit. i think people are too quick to hate on them. greek life actually is a great thing.

why the fuck do you care. If it makes the thread creator happy, then let it be. You don't go to his school and your just assuming that what the frats are like at your school are like the ones at his. Maybe he didn't have to pledge and do gay shit and maybe his frat has open parties. If hes partying 5 nights a week and he enjoys it thats awesome - who are you to judge?

Theres douchebags in frats and theres douchebags not in frats. Some frats are lame and some are cool. Get to know people before you talk shit about them.

I didn't read any of the responses in this shitty thread, but I'd just like to point out that OP is broke as a joke and can barely afford food.....

....but he can pay dues.

It all depends on the school you go to. All of the frats at the U are terrible, so many douchers. I know a couple dude in PKA and theyre OK and all of their "brothers" are cunts. Then all of the the other frats ive been to, only a couple, are once again all douchers and all i hear about any frat dudes here is they are douchers.

OP it sounds like you got a dope situation, sick, it really depends on where you live. Im sure frats at big ass schools could be decent, less douchers, etc.(if you down with the big frat life in general) Most people just have a bad stereotype, just like every gaper at our ski resorts think us kids with tall tees and baggy pants are punks and trouble makers. You kinda just have to go along with it and accept stereotypes and just tell people to fuck off and do what you want, shits way better when you don't give a fuck about what other people think.

It really depends on your school. I'm pretty sure if I went to a school that wasn't in the city and didn't attract a lot of smart, independent kids, I would have had zero interest in joining a fraternity.

"Yes, theres dumb shit that goes on during pldeging, and most of us a drunken pussy hounds."
And that is one of the major reasons people don't like fratboys. You're all (mostly) drunken douches who dress like proto-guidos, popped collars and Ed Hardy, and all you guys think about is "this weekend" and football.
I know one frat-douche who stopped hanging out with me because I "didn't like football." And has done so to other people.
"The parties are always wild, but that shit jsut doesn't happen. I go to a smaller school, under 2000 students, and i know that our greek life is different."
Then you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I don't know what fraternity he is in, but in mine we have an endowment fund that gives out over $250,000 per year to undergraduate brothers to help them pay dues and pay for school. So, even if you are broke as a joke it is still possible to pay dues.

never understood these frats
in Britain some universities have smaller colleges within the main university, like Oxford, cambridge and durham.... really just a place you would live/eat at, but nothing like a frat... there are several "secret" societies that are hidden from view but not many famous ones...
there's the Bullingdon Club at oxford, where the members are so rich that it would make you cry, it is incredibly exclusive and for total douchefucks like David cameroon and various kings and earls and shit.basically it's a dining club/cricket club that famously dine in very expensive restaurants and then smash the place up, like all the windows and shit, then leave and pay for all the damage; because they can afford to....
lil' history there...
is there any real benefit to being in a frat?

Farmhouse was trying to recruit me by calling my house all the time this summer. The greek system here at WSU is so retarded.

It is difficult to explain what a fraternity means to some people. It is a support system throughout college, many people would have gone no where in college had it not been for a house. It is also a bond and experience that will stay with you your entire life. I understand that greek systems differ from school to school so I am just speaking from my own experience. I disagree with everything the op says about what being in a fraternity is like. I actually hope that what he wrote is a joke because he sounds like a moron and i would hope no house would be stupid enough to pledge or initiate someone like that. Sadly the stereotype exists of the "frat" boy douchebaggery, but I can assure you that not all houses are like this, or condone this.

I don't know why people keep saying this! It cost significantly less to live in the Greek system at my school... Its almost half the cost.

At my school i know it is significantly more to be a part of a frat, and the living there is even more on top of that
I could live for 500/600 per month not in the frat with my friends, or I could pay 750 dues for the semester + 550 for living there too
