Greatist band ever

The Beatles. Even if you don't like their music, you can't deny that the movement they pioneered in their time is unmatched to this day.

^ If you are a twelve year old girl.

Hendrix, Beatles, or The Who.

Led Zep Steals Music, so they don't get a spot.

Alice in Chains

The Beatles

The Who

Led Zepplin

pretty much any of the more popular classic rock bands. cept skynard... fuck skynard...

But they took "popular music" to a whole new level. They made every little girl simultaneously have posters of them on their walls. And the influence they had on other musicians...

they're good, i'd have to say the greatest band you don't listen to is the black keys though

i'd say the greatest band of all time in terms of influence was the beatles even though i don't like them and imo i'd say grateful dead

all those old bands are great and i totally agree they were pioneers.

however....Coheed and Cambria...hands down in my opinion. the deepest shit with so much meaning with such a killer sound. they rape. period. i just love that you can hand someone a CD and they will listen to it and not even know that everything claudio (who is a god damn genius) says means something specific in the story...its just epic

they keep changing their line up, I think there is one orignal member in the band.

I would have to go with:

Grateful Dead

Tool

truth. i would for sure consider them the "most influential" band of all time. for me, the greatest would be the grateful dead.

for me
1. Beatles

2. Floyd

3. Phish (currently going through an absolute obsession phase, listening to em right fucking now)

hell ya,..... i have not been able to stop listening to Sigur Ros for about 8 months

you ever listen to any other Icelandic music like "Mum"?

if not, i suggest you do....absolutely amazing

can some one give me a GOOD reason why the beatles were the best band ever besides that they were popular. Zepplin, Floyd, Hendrix and Supertramp blow The Beatles out of the water music wise. Yes the beatles started a whole different movement but so did Elvis, if your looking at that aspect of it I'd actually it to him, he changed music way more than the Beatles. The Beatles music was terrible, best band ever should be about the music created not about the bands significance.

im sorry but i agree with you in some parts of your statement, but to say the beatles were terrible is absolutely untrue, you can be popular briefly while being bad, but the beatles have been popular for how long? the only group you named that comes close to the beatles is hendrix expierience, and possibly zep, they are great, but they do not blow the beatles out of the water by anymeans. and to be honest there is no such thing as the greatest band ever, you have to base it off of genre, year made, etc. you could never narrow it down to one group, and heres the number one reason why, it is all prefrence

first of all, this is a subjective discussion- based almost entirely on opinion.

i think one reason they are the best is because of their huge, vast appeal, to a wide variety of people, rich or poor, young and old, country music lovers or metal heads. i think that unifying factor is huge. it shows that their music/ lyrics/ ideas somehow resonates with a large swath of humanity, on a deep level.

i will give you that the beatles' actual technical chops were not that developed. zep was probably better, musically, though not with nearly the same level of appeal. i find floyd's music to be insipid and boring. hendrix- meh. i respect him as a classic and a badass on the guitar, but can't really listen to his music. i hope you put supertramp in that list as a joke...

please tell me how elvis changed music more than the beatles. elvis played straight blues, and very basic rocknroll. the beatles made music which no one had ever heard or considered before. listen to "tomorrow never knows" and tell me the beatles weren't inovative.

lastly, (and again, this is opinion- albeit one probably shared by 75% of the music listening populace) the beatles music is the shit. thats the REASON they are so popular.

Things that set the Beatles apart:

1. They weren't limited to a single sound or style...they also tended to adapt their style as the years went on, listen to a song like I Want You (She's So Heavy), compared to Roll Over Beethoven. They're so different, yet both are instantly recognizable as the Beatles.

2. They were innovators of engineering, recording, and mixing techniques (due largely to George Martin, who is a badass in his own right).

3. Lennon and McCartney were some of the best songwriters ever.

4. Their playing was idiosyncratic, and awesome. Paul played melodic, active basslines, which was far away from the norm at the time and innovative in its own right. Ringo played a simple kit, and was pretty minimalist, but he has perfect timing, and his fills and accents perfectly filled out their sound. No one had been like them.(To be fair, this applies to Hendrix, from your list, he was a true innovator as well).

5. They sold an absolute SHIT TON of albums.

I believe your statement is ridiculous. Their music was original and awesome.

And just for fun - if the Beatles' music was so terrible, why did Hendrix himself cover Sgt. Pepper's the day after it was released? (Awesome video by the way, try to find it somewhere)
