Greatest Skier Of All Time?

Doug Coombs was definetly the most infuential and progressive skier of all time, but i dont think he was the most talented all around. He definetly shredded big mountain, but Seth can shred just as hard.

there is a difference between greatest and most influential. Ringo Starr wasnt the greatest drummer of all time, but he is the most progressive and influential. thats why he deserves mad respect. just like doug coombs.

in my opinion i don't think plake is in the same category. i reckon he was more of a "product" or an "image". he was well marketed because the was the first really marketable skier. Sure he was a good skier but his persona was equally "big" as his skiing and thats why he is such an icon.

well in that case i think it comes down to the definition of great or greatness, not best

Great:

(adj) great, outstanding (of major significance or importance)

(adj) great (remarkable or out of the ordinary in degree or magnitude or effect)

so to me, i'm going to say great is closer to influential than 'best'

anyway it's all opinion anyway and it's almost impossible to write one name down when it comes to the best or greatest skier ever..plenty of incredibly influential racers too.

I'm gunna have to disagree with you, although Ringo is awesome, i think Bonzo was the most influential drummer of all time, or possibly Keith Moon, but Bonzo was definitely the greatest.

Keith was a ridiculous drummer. Bonham was definetly the greatest of all time, but RIngo started the style that insipred everyone else. Just like doug coombs started big mountain skiing. He was the catalyst that inspired the greats like seth.

I'm with you on the Doug v. Seth, and sine Ringo was the greatest rock/pop drummer i'm sure he greatly influenced Keith's hard fast pop style, but Bonzo was mostly influenced by the drummer from Cream, i can't remember his name right now, and they defined rock drumming and had a greater impact on the music that followed. (btw im just bored not trying to get in a fat argument)

New plan,
ask a question, then make up a definition so that you are right.

I guess that's one way to do it.

Maybe if you werent retarded then you might know the difference between influential and great

Any one have any video of Doug Coombs in the Park? Coombs was a sick big mountain skier, and arguably one of the most epic skiers of all time, the question was who is the best all round skier. I bet Glenn Plake can bust out some wicked ski ballet.

i dont believe exploring makes them great because i do that as well but if u have a chance to get exposed for that it means ur good. being able to do it the best makes u great which is y there r so many greats because there are so many levels of skiing in which u can be great. henrick=greatest park skier right now, simon=greatest pipe, bc=prob andy mahre, big mountain=prob sage, etc. see what i mean man?

In a warren miller video from a few years back there's a segment with coombs and seth were skiing the same faces one after the other. There wasn't any hucking, just steep, technical terrain. It was pretty incredible how sloppy and slow seth looked next to doug. The wasn't straightline to the max sort of skiing, it was the just a controlled descent and doug's form was perfect. As far as descending the worlds gnarliest shit 100% in control, coombs takes the greatness cake.

yea man i see what u mean i just think the ones pushing the limits on what has already been explored are simply greater but they also have the new equiptment and knowledge from the ppl u r speaking of to help w/ that. as far as im concerned we're all fucken great as long as we give back as much as possible and do what we love as much as possible

Seth is bad, Doug Coombs was a great technical skier and on the forefront as a ski mountaineer, but McConkey and Kreitler are the fathers of modern freeskiing, they designed the first reverse camber and sidecut ski, and the segments that they put together for the early matchstick movies (on straight skis no less) rival any segment ever made. They went huge before any one else, and are in there 40's still doing it bigger and better than almost anyone.

First, skiing is has such long history and diversity, the saying someone is unequivocally the greatest, will alway be debatable. how do you compare a jibber to a racer? That being said, if i where to put down a name, it would probably be a big mountain skier, pushing the limits of what can be skied on the grandest scale. But the most important thing when looking at this is the the skier be held up against his peers. You cant say, "if he had the modern day equipment and backround we do...." or ignore that either. You have to look at what that person did compared to the other top pros of the time, and with greatness in my opinion, you also have to examine how that skier redefined what was possible on skis. In my opinion, for someone to be considered the greatest, they must redefine their sport in more than one way. In skiing, (big mountain), i would look to see someone pushed what they skied in scale, technicality and creativity, how they skied it(style), and did all this continually. Also, the greatest in a sport usually has that intangible skill by far and away the best, Look at michael jordan and tiger woods, I can think of no one better when it is on the line than these two.
