Greatest guitar player, ever?

Who do you think, to date, is the greatest guitar player?

I can't really decide, but Stevie Ray Vaughan is at the top, followed by (in no order) Mark Knoppfler (sp?), Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton.... in my opinion. Les Paul's pretty important too.

Jeff Martin of the Tea Party is really friggen amazing on guitar.

SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, The King, uhhh, I forget...

We had this discussion at school last year and some fag said 'Lenny Kravitz.' The room just stopped still and starred at him...he's dead now...they found him mutilated in a garbage can.

I don't want the world, I just want your half.

I saved Latin, what did you do?

Slash! uhh. yeah..

Jimmy Page is obviously up there with eric clapton, bb king, les paul was an insanely important person for rock n' roll progression. And then there's Marty Friedman. Man can that guy's fingers move. If you can get your hands on his solo album, you're in for a treat. The music is hard, but the guitar playing is phenominal.

Matt

jimi hendrix by far. people can compare, but he really started this whole new style of guitar. he was described as the first 'heavy metal' music. He was innovative and amazing. jimmy paige was just amazing, not too innovative.

theres a natural mystic flowing through the air if you listen carefully now you will hear. its the first trumpet calling. might as well be the last. many more will have to suffer many more will have to die dont ask me why. things are not the way they used to be.

how is Garcia in this...sure hes great, but how was he influential or anything? That would be the same as putting Kurt Cobain on there, she his shit is sweet, but anyone could learn what he does in ten minutes flat.

jimmie martin, doc watson, merle travis are all tremendous bluegrass players

srv wins overall i think though

'He got fired? What did he do?'

'He jumped off of the roof again'

hmm this is hard. gotta make different catagories.

revolutionary:

1. Buddy Guy

2. Les Paul

3. Hendrix

Just damn good:

1. Hendrix

2. Jimmy Page

3. Eddie Hazel

Unique people:

1. Nick Drake

2. i dunno... Phil Keaggy

3. Paul Gilbert. hehe (80s rock!)

I may get stoned by the masses here but I'm gonna say that hendrix is way over rated. Everyone labels him as the greatest/most revolutionary guitarist. He's damn good there's no doubt. but every guitarist is taking from another. in Jimi's case. it was buddy guy and people like him, he's just got a different grungy/muted style. listen to 'feels like rain' by buddy guy and other stuff by him and even Keaggy. that is all.

Mercer: good make it your sig on ns.com faggot

Mercer: and hump the vacume while your at it.

I don't think it would be fair to say that Jimmy Page was not revolutionary. Using a bow for the solo of Dazed and Confused. Writing the single most played 'rock n' roll' song of all time. He paved the way for millions of guitarists. Think of all the people that envy him and use him as a role-model in their own learning. I think he's just as much a revolutionary as Jimi Hendrix is.

...plus can you say doubled necked guitar?

y'know, i'm really getting sick of this shit, nobody realizes that wesley willis is the best guitar player, singer, songwriter and band ever. why is there even a discussion going on when it's so damn obvious? please, if you don't know who he is do yourself a favor and download one song. any song will convince you he is god.

hendrix and paige. Garcia was good but i dont think he is even close to the best wasnt really revolutionary and if you listen to lots of concerts sometiems it sounds like he is just able to keep up with everyone else. But he was good and I love the grateful dead and grisman/garcia stuff and jerry garcia band but he was good at lots of different musical styles and stuff

hendrix srv and carlos santanna are the best in my book. but then there is also jeff beck bb king clapton and some newer guys like joe satriani and steve vai. and i know he is like garcia and cobain but brad nowell from sublime was pretty original with a lot of his stuff. o ya and the guitarist from ten years after is insane

-Nell Cop

and wesley willis is deffinitly up there. i dont see why cut the mullet isnt on mtv 24/7

-------------------------------------

-Nell Cop

i dunno, but i would definitely NOT include tom morello on my list.. sure, he's pretty innovative and original, but anybody can produce music with power chords and hammer-ons, pull-offs.

in my books, it's all about page, clapton, hendrix (especially since he did everything in the span of under 4 years), and van halen.

as a contemporary favourite, i would have to say johnny greenwood. he does it all..

last but not least, i'm gonna say alex lifeson, only because i've got a special place in my heart for rush. (insert insults here)

Mark Knopfler, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Trey (if you've been to his shows, you know he'll be even more amazing in a few years)

oh shit, you gotta be kidding? how can you say morello? fuck man, we cant really see that much influence of a guy whos been famous for ten years. i dunno man, but you gotta give respect to jimi and clapton. but i dont think we really can say anybody from the past ten years, its pretty ludicrous
