Greatest athlete

haha yea honestly if i wanted to brag i would too. I'm saying most of the people don't realize how fast they actually go in the mile. On TV and even in person, it doesn't look like they are trying that hard. But, you try yourself, and you will see just how insane it is. My pr in 400 hurdles is 57.2, but to most people that number means nothing. The best way for somebody to understand something is for them to do it htemselves.
 
I saw him run about 2 years ago, at my school, in the prefontaine classic.......he is amazing to watch in person.
 
Yeah, I know this is a skiing site....but come on. The best athlete in the world is not a 5'6", 135lb snowboarder/skier. Having brass balls and fierce determination is one thing...But holding the ability to run a 4.3 40 yard dash, benchpress 600lbs, and dunk a basketball from the foul line is a whole other story. Arguably, Lebron James or T.O.

whatever. donovan bailey beat him in that famous 150m race. regardless of what you say, that takes away a lot of credibility from johnson, because he was a huge claimer and didnt back it up.
 
Yes I've seen that race on video, #1 MJ pulls up, but he was also losing. The fact that he holds a record in an event that is decided in hundredths by .3 is insane. Not to mention he holds the 400 world record by .1. But, I think Wariner will break the 400 record. He did back up his claims, seeing how he is the best 200 and 400 runner in history.
 
no. he didn't back up his claim that he was the fastest man in the world. if you're going to call him the greatest athlete ever, he better at least have been the fastest. donovan bailey was faster. end of story.
 
How can you say he was faster? Who owns 2 world records? First of all, Bailey beat him in the 150 meter race, which is not Johnsons best event. He is a long sprinter. And also, just because he got beat once doesn't make him slower. Does Justin Gatlin win every race he enters? What about Wariner? Or El Gouroujj?
 
i can say donovan was faster because he beat johnson at the 150, period.

johnson claimed it to death that he'd beat bailey and thus prove he was the world's fastest man. johnson lost. this was when they were both in their prime, and both held world records.

and you defend johnson by saying it wasnt his best event? bailey held the world record in the 60 and the 100, so the 150 wasnt his best event either. he won regardless.

i hate how every american was prepared to finally denounce donovan as the worlds fastest man after that race if johnson had won. but instead, they dismissed the race as illegitemate when your golden boy got owned.
 
Being the greatest athlete isn't about one race and one race only. For example, asafa powell currently holds the 100 record, but he lost to Gatlin at the olympics in the 100. Johnson's career is so illustrious that I choose him as a candidate for greatest athlete. There is no clear Greatest athlete. Yes Bailey beat Johnson that day, but look at the span of Johnson's career. His 200 world record is insane. Bailey had the 100 world record, at 9.85, which was broken soon afterwards. He holds the 50 meter record, but lets be honest, nobody runs that. Johnsons 200 record looks to be safe for many years to come. Overall, Johnson was a better track athlete than bailey, just not during that race.
 
yea man i agree. Wariner is a machine, plus hes what.. 20 or 21? If he stays injury free he will beast out some insane times. I just read that Johnson didn't lose in the 400 for 8 years straight. Think about that. That would be like Olsson or Tanner winning every comp they entered from now until 2014. Absolutely insane.

at a newspaper article at my school it said that he produces 500 watts of energy on his bike per hour (the number is most likely wrong, but my comparison will be right). it then said that an average nhl hockey player could keep that productivity up for 2 minutes, and then throw up.
 
I said that shit. Kelly is insane. Honestly you cant cap a single athlete as the greatest because all sports are different. The greatest athlete for each sport is differnet and it is somebody who dominates the sport during their time and leaves no questions as to why they are the best.
 
But Kelly dominated his sport like no one beofre him ever had in any sport period and he did it at a younger age. He is the greatest athelete ever Jordan is close but Kelly is still the obvious choice.
 
no that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. kelly slater is not the best athlete. he might be up there for extreme sports but is nothing in physical shape and ability to any profeesional soccer player. he doesnt have shit on lance. lance has my vote. or marathon runners or distance swimmers
 
anyone who can complete the ironman, that thing is crazy and it isnt just based on one sport like lebron in basketball or pele in soccer, it is overall athleticism
 
I think boxers and just any of the fighing sports in general like ulimate fighting probably have to be some of the best athletes out there. I dont have a good example of one of them but they have to have a shitload of endurance and strength to do that. Other than that I might have to go with lance.
 
pre is a huge inspiration, tough athlete in the hed. But he never got a world record or an olympic record. No doubt he would have at montreal, his story is amazing, and perhaps a hero story but he jsut never got the world results tobe considered the greatest athlete.

i have heard many coaches (across all sports) say that pole vaulters and decathaletes are usually the most athletic people. they can easily switch to other events, other sports. in my experience with track that was the case, all those guys would just decide to run a race right before then would destroy, the best football and baseball players and shit too.

so, um the guys who win medals in decathalon and pole vault.
